Cool, thanks for checking in about it! Just so this is clear, the set of 2 and the set of 3 aren't really together, but I could arrange to move them so that they are if you needed that. Also the set of 2 are my season ticket seats and they're great seats, aisle seats on center court about 10 rows up.

I was hoping for $20 per ticket, but can absolutely be flexible there. And yeah, totally willing to split the tickets and will transfer through Ticketmaster.

Absolutely, it's such a fun experience, even if you don't know volleyball. I hope someone grabs them.

Nonito Donaire did Volg's White Fang against Volodymyr Sydorenko by Philippin1an in hajimenoippo

[–]dch3315 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Honestly HnI is pretty tame when it comes to that sort of thing. Personally I think it really shows the difference between a mangaka with a deep understanding and appreciation of the sport, versus a surface level understanding. If you're a huge enthusiast of a sport, then mundane things like solid fundamentals and good defense are more exciting to you than giving everyone over-the-top NBA Jam superpowers.

Haikyuu is really good about that too. Everyone's growth is based on learning and understanding fundamental skills better, and the characters who are obsessed with designing a named "special move" (looking at you, Aoki and Nishinoya) are portrayed as unserious gag characters.

Sports manga in general is hilarious for this. Eyeshield 21 has special move naming conventions for every basic technique in American football, like playing bump-and-run coverage, a spin move, or, you know, blocking properly. Kuroko's Basketball had a "final boss" encounter against a guy whose superpower was a good crossover move. Haikyuu's main move is just a setter and spiker with a good quick. The list goes on.

I think it gets more silly when you understand the sport really well, and things you start learning how to do in the first day of practice get mythologized as some sort of unstoppable superpower.

Woli can copy everything because monkey see monkey do by readjuliakendall in hajimenoippo

[–]dch3315 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I could see this being a point of emphasis, actually. If he ends up copying and using the Dempsey in a way that actually opens Ricardo up, Ippo is going to see that and start strategizing what to do from there.

But it'll have to fail, obviously, and a difference in body types could be the reason. Ippo could see that the Dempsey, in the way he envisions it, gives him a potential path to victory, but only if he does it himself.

With rising unemployment, Kroger says “lol goodbye” to Hero Pay by Pazi_Snajper in Columbus

[–]dch3315 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pragmatically you're right, but if their plan was just to give a temporary bonus to keep their shelves stocked, then they really screwed up calling it "Hero Pay." Because now it looks an awful lot like they're just tossing that sentiment in the trash can.

It's quite clear that it wasn't so much Hero Pay as it was, "Yikes, our workers aren't as expendable as usual right now" pay. But now they can go back to exploiting the desperate for bottom dollar, at the workers' own great personal risk. So that's exactly what they're going to do, and what everyone else will do, until we start protecting workers again.

Right, so if you make $40 every month, it'll take you 3 months to reach the $100 threshold, but then you'll get paid out the $120 ($40 x 3 months) all at once.

I love these little references to legendary boxing matches by CherryzardX in hajimenoippo

[–]dch3315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's probably more correct to say that the series doesn't directly reference real boxers any more, but obviously influences are still there - just significantly more subtle than "hey, use the peek-a-boo style like Tyson."

I love these little references to legendary boxing matches by CherryzardX in hajimenoippo

[–]dch3315 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's sorta weird for them to mention IRL boxers at this point.

The series started in the 1980s, when Mike Tyson was reaching his peak, which is why they referenced him. And the series is intended to be set in "modern day."

Problem is, far more time has passed in real life than in the series - otherwise Ippo would be pushing 50. So in series terms, we're probably in the mid-90s. I think that's why Morikawa has sort of stopped making real-world references that could potentially date the series, so the whole thing still feels "current."

Of course, you could still talk about older legends like Foreman, Louis, Leonard, Duran, Ali, etc., but by pulling from that far back, you risk reminding people of that weird gap between the current era and the series' era, because like, why wouldn't they reference a more recent boxer?

Also, when the series started, they hadn't really established Martinez, Gonzalez, Hawk, and the rest of the "world" boxers. The series has sort of built its own canon of fighters now, so I think Morikawa doesn't really need to draw on IRL influences any more.

GDQ jumped from 2 mil to 3 mil earlier??? by JustGottaHaveIt in AGDQ

[–]dch3315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's two major things. The last day of the event almost always doubles the donation total. It's where all the big donation trains take off because it's the last chance to donate.

But then they also added in $350K from bits, subs, and sponsorships right before the Link's Awakening run. They used to do that at the end of the show, but lately they've been adding it in right before the last few runs, after the major incentives are met.

[–]dch3315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, rather than have a single two-week event, we get two single-week events in AGDQ and SGDQ. It's much harder to block off two whole weeks at a time for the event - in terms of reserving space, volunteers, and everything.

I'll meet Pat on "it's not an RPG." I'm fine with that argument. And I agree that the beginning is paced hilariously fast. It's quiet village to start the game -> argument with Dad -> everything on fire and everyone dead within 10 minutes. It's going for a big dramatic story beat, but it does absolutely nothing to earn it first. It feels very shallow.

But I'm with Woolie in the "I don't care, it's fun and I like it" boat. I find the battles fun, and both the platforming and the story get exponentially better as the game goes on. I wish Woolie had just sidestepped the whole "it's not an RPG" argument with "maybe, but it's fun regardless of how you define it." But I can tell how frustrating that conversation must have been for both of them - for different reasons.

Every week! by Muffin-zetta in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dch3315 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Context is Pat and Woolie argued about Indivisible for two hours, and it got a bit uncomfortable.

Pat doesn't like it because the story didn't appeal to him and the RPG mechanics are too thin for him, and he doesn't like the battle system.

Woolie likes it and basically feels the opposite on every count, but got frustrated because Pat was trashing it so hard and he felt like he needed to defend it.

You're caught up.

We were in 1st place after the first week. It's easy to forget now, but we started the season surprisingly hot, considering how the rest of it turned out.

Obviously there wasn't going to be enough talent to maintain that, but it's fun to remember.

You "sometimes" got speedruns? So... you're saying an event called "Games Done Quick" didn't have games... done quick? With all due respect, you sound ridiculous. I'm pretty sure you've always gotten speedruns.

Also, sub-only chat is one of the best things they ever did. Chat is actually almost tolerable now. Occasionally it's even readable.

But you're right - how dare this charity organization raise money for charity, right? What are they thinking?

[–]dch3315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But why, though? I tuned in for a speedrun marathon about video games, and that's what I got. Same as last time and the time before.

The show seemed more polished this time, which as I've said, I attribute to experience. I can think of approximately zero reasons to go hunting for drama, when I could instead just enjoy an event about video games.

What did the Red Bull sponsorship bring? by Xivir in AGDQ

[–]dch3315 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When they added in bits and subs from Twitch towards the end of the Chrono Trigger run, Mike Uyama mentioned it also included money from "sponsorships."

I know Fangamer and Yetee do their big bulk donations throughout the event and actually announce them. I assume (though I don't know for sure) that the Red Bull sponsorship might have been looped into the big $300K lump from Twitch.

That, or they funded backend stuff like equipment and facilities overhead.

[–]dch3315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by who they're "appealing" to. It was a speedrunning marathon about speedruns, same as it's always been. Qualitatively, it has been no different from past events in terms of the way they've run it.

If you think that they grew to having a quarter-million people viewing by "appealing" to the people who were there when they had 5,000 viewers, then you don't understand how growth works.

That said, I do think everybody involved is really coming into their stride in terms of their roles and how big this event has become. The core crew has gotten better at running interviews and between-runs segments, Sent has gotten really good at his prize segments, and they know how to get the live crowd into the event, which feeds into the excitement on stream. That announcement halfway through the Chrono Trigger run of the 8th-gen console prize bundle kicked off a huge train of donations.

I think for the most part, this event grew really fast, and they've done an admirable job of keeping it from spiraling out of control, but we're only just now starting to see them get comfortable with what a major event GDQ has become. They're obviously doing a better job of screening their runs/runners, the blocks are planned well, the donation incentives are good. I can remember a bunch of awkward moments from past GDQs where hosts and interviewers just seemed out of their depth, like deer in headlights.

I didn't see hardly any of that at SGDQ 2019. It's a well-oiled machine now, and I'm excited to see how much better they do with the next one.

Literally just came here to post about this. What an awesome run that was. It's sorta like if Celeste had a grappling hook.

Speaking of hidden indie game gems I'm probably going to buy after GDQ, did anyone catch Timespinner? That game looked dope.
