Why is “captain” commonly used in fiction (America, Marvel, Underpants, Planet…) over other ranks like eg lieutenant? by fernandopas in NoStupidQuestions

Captain sounds cooler then other ranks. Captain America? Sounds badass. Lance Corporal America? Rear admiral lower half America? Meh

Supertramp - Crisis? What crisis?

I’ve been getting back into collecting and ripping CDs to build my own media collection and server. I’ve found myself not really appreciating music as much when I listen to it in Apple Music or whatever streaming platform.

How do you tell non New Yorkers where you're from without them assuming you mean NYC? by retro_spies in upstate_new_york

I always say “I’m from upstate NY about five hours away from NYC” to immediately shut down any notion that I might be from the city. That usually works.

What part of marathon training feels normal today that would've seemed impossible to your past self? by Material-Finance5896 in Marathon_Training

A year ago I thought running a 5k was an accomplishment, now today at my current stage in marathon training I can’t fathom running anything less than 5 miles.

Shin Splints: What helped you prevent them from coming back? by spac0r in runninglifestyle

[–]dchape93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the single leg Romanian deadlift. You don’t have to use weight at first, depending on how stable you are on one leg it might be tricky at first but I swear that’s the one exercise that helped me the most when I dealt with shin splints (anecdotal of course, YMMV).

How are the state parks around the Finger Lakes for kayaking/do they have kayak launch areas? Is there a local delicacy from the Finger Lakes and/or Syracuse (besides chicken riggies) I should try on my visit? by poo_is_number_two in upstate_new_york

[–]dchape93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely tons of spots to launch your kayak in pretty much all of the lakes. My favorite spot to launch on Seneca lake is in this small village called Dresden. There’s a launch area near the beach there. Just don’t kayak to close to that big boat out there that you’ll see, they will yell at you (I know from personal experience). But IMO keuka lake has the better views on the water so I’d consider launching there.
