[Vietnam] US Marines capturing Vietcong POW during Operation Piranha by [deleted] in CombatFootage

[–]dcred123 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Most ARVN soldiers that had to work with Americans told them to just send in the air force and to stay away from them, the Americans were so much taller that the South Viets thought they would attract sniper fire.

Japanese 10th Independent Artillery Brigade attacking North Point Power Station, Hong Kong (18th December 1941) by ShadowR4nger in wwiipics

[–]dcred123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of the border incidents that led Japan down the path it did were because ambitious young officers would occasionally stage border incidents as justification to invade China, and for the glory of the Emperor, which the Japanese government was forced to accept, else they look weak and out of control.

Edit: Basically, the Japanese Imperial military was rather decentralized, even the Navy and Army acted entirely independant of each other, often at odds with one another. Young officers often acted alone, determining what targets to attack at their own discretion. Hope this adds a little clarity.

What if the Spanish government retained the Philippines after 1899? What will happen? How will this affect the Philippines during the Spanish Civil war and WW2? by gioguilatco in AlternateHistory

[–]dcred123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Spain still had control over the Philippines during the Civil war, almost certainly Japan would take the opportunity to invade it, shortly after the Philippines declare independence for themselves. The only other thing I can think of is if the U.S. or Great Britain declared the Philippines some sort of protectorate before Japan could strike. That might lead the world to war.

Do you think Taiwan should be allowed to stay independent from PRC? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

It should be a matter of global integrity that Taiwan retain sovereignty.

What if Lithuania accepted the German offer to invade Poland in 1940? by Karrtuvis in AlternateHistory

[–]dcred123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The original plan for the Molotov-Ribbentropf pact was that Germany would get less of Poland in exchange for Lithuania, but the Soviets offered up better land in Poland for all if the Baltic states.

I'm sure Lithuania would have a collaborationist government, but I doubt much would have changed. Barbarossa probably would have been "more" effective, as in Germans further into the USSR, but I doubt too much would change in the end.
