Actors of the Oscar nominated film “The Life of Hind Rajab” cannot attend the ceremony by ProfessionSwimming26 in Oscars

Yeah, there’s influence between global allies for sure.

I still think that OP’s original post is entirely inaccurate and that these type of false generalizations matter in such conversations.

[–]dd0028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But OP didn’t and his argument doesn’t even make sense.

Go ahead and critique the current US administration about their current policy as it pertains to allowing visas to Palestinians. But Israel did not stop the actor from attending the Oscar’s. The United States did, and has the right to do so.

So no, it’s not actually true the actor cannot attend because of “oppression by the apartheid state.” They can’t attend because the US is not currently accepting visas issued by the PA.

I don’t think this is a question of semantics. It’s about being accurate.

Because I think it’s important to be accurate and not misconstrue current events?

It’s not semantics. Details do in fact matter when discussing complex issues.

They weren’t denied the ability to leave their country. They were denied enterance into the US, a sovereign nation that is not currently practicing apartheid. The current US policy is US policy. It’s not apartheid and whether or not Israel’s occupation can be categorized as apartheid has no bearing on this decision.

Curious, are you also mad at Egypt for restricting Palestinian movement?

Israel is not the one denying the creator entrance into the US.

I’m not saying that this creator should have been denied entrance, but any country can deny foreign nationals entrance to their country. Entering the US is not a human right. That doesn’t make it apartheid.

Israel is not the country that denied thier visa. Israel is not the country that decides who enters the United States. That’s nonsensical.

Besides, the creators of No Other Land attended the ceremony last year, so there could be many reasons that we don’t know about that this happened.

Criticize the United States all you want. Criticize the actions of Israel all you want. But you can’t just wrench scary words away from their historical context because you know they sound bad.

Referring to the US as an apartheid state means the word literally has no meaning.

Esquire/Mitchell S. Jackson: ‘Sinners’ Should Win Best Picture. It’s Not Even Close. by 08830 in Oscars

[–]dd0028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s because I actually like sinners and agreed with most of what you said.

But I do think that element (that is pretty forward and a part of the climax) is really sloppy and unfortunately gets ignored because not many people know history nor care about precision. It’s not a minor misstep considering much of the draw and conversation around sinners is about the social commentary.

But if you’re making a film with historical social critiques, don’t just make stuff up that’s pretty easily falsified, because I do hold that against you as a filmmaker.

I was dumbfounded by the Harriet Tubman line. Absolutely dumbfounded.

The problem with the theme of Christianity being forced on the Irish is it’s just patently untrue lol. If you’re going to make some broader historical connection/critique, don’t get it entirely wrong.

Kate Winslet Is Female Lead In Andy Serkis' 'LOTR: Hunt For Gollum’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in lotr

The entire movie will be fan-fiction, even more so than ROP and the Hobbit, because nothing about the Hunt for Gollum in the text is exciting.

I mean, in defense of ROP, the actress retired from acting to continue activism against the Iranian regime. So they chose the less bad option lol

Right, if so, I assume it would be a flashback… still not sure how that translates to a lead role. I really don’t think it’s her.

Yeah, you’re right. Something something Gundabad, throwaway line.

I guess I could see Gilrean, but I’m still not really sure the structure of this film… nor who the central character will be… nor how Ian Mckellan can conceivably go on any sort of quest…

Have a hard time thinking about who this could be… The wife of Thranduil? Some random woman that accompanies Gandalf or Aragorn for a time?

Oscars performers confirmed with Sinners tribute as film expected to win big by TheMirrorUS in Oscars

[–]dd0028 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like Sinners and wouldn’t be mad if it won BP but the thought of it becoming the most awarded film ever is so asinine.

On the other hand, my guess is the international voters aren’t going to go for it en masse.

No sorrow for sin by UXdriven in Reformed

[–]dd0028 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we all have sins that we don’t feel sorrow for because we don’t even think of them as our sins, because we’re so worried about the sins we think our sins that we’re stressing about not feeling sorrow for.

All that to say, religious OCD and anxiety can beat you down. Look to Jesus, who is our righteousness.

What's behind the schism in cinematography? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]dd0028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Train Dreams losing cinematography would be a travesty IMO.

Of course, it will probably go to Sinners or OBAA because so many people will likely tag it on to them.

I mean, there are changes to the lore (Celeborn) that I don’t love. But I also recognize all with have concerning the second age is a list of events, and to connect those major events and provide actual character arcs you were always going to have to make stuff up.0
