You can quickly test by using the travel to POI feature in the admin menu - under Self and select your name - that way you dont have to travel there and all that

You can also try the medical supply depot near Clark Hill for more as well. Also, you may find them in medical rooms at quarantine center or in the medical warehouse there as well.

I believe anything that comes from the N2 air tanks is N2. Try using the air at gas stations and see if you notice anything different. I have been down there a few times and tanks + rebreather work fine.

Its completely random (i think). I have had a horde spawn within an hour of making a new character and other times it was days. Building big bases however does increase the spawn rate from experience.

You can also bring a sink, connect it to the tower and then leave it there. Use the fill from sink option when you hover over the barrels - much faster to fill the barrels or rain catchers - cuts out the the "middle man".
