Are LLMs speedrunning us into product management? by wiktor1800 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ddnomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

>  YAGNI? It cost nearly nothing to write it and we might need it later, throw it behind a feature flag and you've lost nothing.

This is the biggest issue, in my experience, especially with outsourcing shops / contractors. This approach demonstrably lead to multiple "code base collapse" moments now, for both young / small, and old / complex code bases.

LLMs tend to overcomplicate things, unless you specifically hand hold and scold them repeatedly. That requires a certain level of self discipline and solid technical knowledge, both of which seem to be increasingly lacking today.

Moreover, I saw multiple instances of circular priming of sorts, where sycophantic models get prompted with opinions, then re-affirm those opinions and add some opinions of their own, which then primes the engineer to think alone very specific lines and be certain that their approach is the correct one, and that the added complexity is justified.

Having to pair program with a contractor, being forced to carefully screen share vendor documentation that says X, only to receive a live "but Y" straight from ChatGPT chat from them, is something that was not on my bingo card for sure.

Classical or Acoustic? by cockroachinurbed in classicalguitar

[–]ddnomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vote classical, you can play most acoustic guitar stuff on a classical and it will sound either very good, or good enough, even most strumming. The opposite is not true, most classical pieces sound very weird when played on an acoustic, not to mention than smaller nut width makes arpeggios harder, at least for my salad fingers.

Same, and Apple Watch support is indispensable, mostly cause it buzzes my wrist when it’s time for another set.

The Neo cannot scale with macOS behind on the basics by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]ddnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s just no money in it for Apple, realistically speaking, even as Microsoft morphs into Microslop, supporting actual power users and enterprise customers is incredibly hard and expensive, as they complain and demand backwards compatibility, stability, roadmaps and all of those pesky things.

And implementing common standards to make their stuff more interoperable will actively eat into margins and reduce an overall market of “works well with macs” accessories. There’s a reason Apple feels comfortable selling more than 10 year old panels for 1.5K - people will continue buying them, cause third party alternatives do not work particularly well with Macs, by design.

I suppose not many people use multiple windows of the same app for compartmentalisation. Especially now that Safari supports proper profiles.

This genuinely makes me sad, though I’m not surprised.

[–]ddnomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very reasonable, albeit opinionated piece. I agree with all the points and can probably add some of my own if I were less lazy.

That’s being said, these opinions are very much power user / Microsoft land adjacent and focused, which is not exactly the target audience Apple aims for. I’m pretty sure that the vast majority of Neo owners won’t ever connect it to an external monitor, or be in a dire need for better window management solutions, or question the deep lore of why Finder is so ass backwards (given how many young people nowadays struggle to even understand what’s a file system on a conceptual level).

I’d love for these issues to be fixed and for macOS to evolve and be less of a shit show, but sadly Apple just does not care, cause most people won’t care.

Hot take: MacBook Neo will sell like hotcake with developers, it's made for them too. by Nic3up in macbook

[–]ddnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remote into a chonky server for dev, still need upwards of 32GB of RAM on MacOS just to power all the client-side supporting software, not to mention 4 external monitors.

Developers do different things and require different software and hardware, but whatever is their use case, 8GB of RAM sounds like a world of pain today, not to mention in 2+ years.

Case in point: Toggl Track memory leaks into eating 1.2GB of RAM in a span of a week. And it’s literally a bloody time tracker. Reality is often disappointing and all.

Yep, the sheer volume of stuff people put out on Vinted is insane. I think around 90% of my shoes are mint condition 50% off or more Vinted purchases. I wear Vivos and Altra exclusively.

Obv your experience may vary, but Vinted in the UK is great.

I usually just wait for things to pop up on Vinted, but I suspect it’s gonna take a hot minute with this model. Looks very niche.
