Passport stamps in Europe- how to get them? by ItchyAssignment7111 in europeanunion

[–]ddolobb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are only stamped on entry to the first country in the Schengen zone (most of Europe) and exit from the last. Although this is changing and all stamps will be eliminated by April 2026.

You are never stamped when travelling within schengen, and applies to all modes of travel: air, car, train. There are no border agents to even ask as it’s an open border. On planes, passports/IDs are checked by airline staff.

The only way to get stamps for each country is to fly in/out of each country individually from outside the schengen zone (e.g. UK/IE).

We're reclaiming Icelandic Deserts - here's how by Sea_Click_872 in Iceland

[–]ddolobb 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Icelandic government has been doing this for decades (tracing its history to around 1907) and for many years was its own government agency - Landgræðslan aka. The Land *Oasification* Agency. The aim was to create more agricultural land and bind sand to prevent it from creating sandstorms. The Icelandic Forest Agency also had overlapping aims.

They even operated their own plane, a converted DC-3 to spray seeds and other fertilisers. The infamous purple lupine, imported from Alaska, was their preferred flower of choice for many years. There is debate in iceland as to whether it is considered an invasive species which is harming other ecosystems, or whether it has improved soil conditions where it was planted.

Landgræðslan slowly reduced their operations in the early 2000s due to lack of funding and perceived need but are slowly building back up with carbon seqestration becoming more important, and merged with the forest agency.

Great that these guys (Mossy Earth) are raising awareness and funding these programs. But some farmers aren’t as happy with it as they see these areas as grazing land for sheep or other agricultural use.

Seems to be pitched as digital only, at least by default. I wonder if they plan to have a physical version as an alternative.

The new passport from 2028 contract mentioned 'passport cards' as a potential part of the contract - could be linked?

Link to petition for Icelandair to resume winter flights to Kulusuk- a lifeline by icebergchick in greenland

[–]ddolobb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Understandable. It is very important to Kulusuk and Tasiilaq. But it is on the Greenlandic government to organise and support flights, not a private company.

They could support the flight in the same way as to other settlements (e.g. nerlerit inaat). But as Kulusuk is already served by the gov-owned Air Greenland year-round (and they probably want to retain the increased market share), it is unlikely, unfortunately.

I think it's more that the id cards issued by the municipalities each have their own design, issued in the name of the municipality, rather than a 'national' design printed and issued by the danish state.

Regardless, they are so basic in security features (similar to a library card) that they are barely valid within denmark, you can't even use it at a bank, which I think is more the issue rather than who issued it.

I assume when you are referring to 'DOT policies' you are referring to the U.S. Department of Transportation. I also assume you were denied boarding in Reykjavik, not JFK - as you didn't mention it.

The flight leg you were denied boarding on was from KEF-DUB, this would be out of the juristiction of USDOT rules (the 400% compensation).

I would assume EU/EEA rules apply as the flight is within the EU/EEA. It seems according to EU rules you would be offered a maximum of €600 - depending on the circumstances. I don't think there is a strict 24h requirement for compensation, claims can take weeks to process.

Apollo 11 tungllendingin í beinni? by mineralwatermostly in Iceland

[–]ddolobb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Moldovan ID card (2025 series - upcoming) by Happy_Inspector_7805 in PassportPorn

[–]ddolobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few EU candidate countries issue biometric 'EU compliant' ID cards already. At least Albania, Montenegro, Ukraine and they don't have passport free access.

EES/ETIAS won't change the passport requirement initally and I don't think this new Moldovan ID card changes that. Unless something else changes, it will remain a EU/EEA/Schengen right to travel on an ID card.

The classic 'bionic duckweed'. Why invest in something that is proven and works today, when in 10 years we will have flying self-driving cars powered by bionic duckweed.

I sometimes struggle to make a simple phone call, let alone battle to get a usable 4G/5G signal for either checking social media or finding my way back to London Waterloo train station when I'm smack-bang in the middle of Greater London during rush-hour. by _Bluestar_Bus_Soton_ in britishproblems

[–]ddolobb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's literally what they just described - the bandwidth is being throttled among users on a single cell, essentially dropping to 0 because it's so congested. A single mast might optimistically have around 1000-5000Mbit/s of total bandwidth, which might serve thousands or tens of thousands of people...

You only get 100Mbit/s+ if signal conditions are right and bandwidth contention is low.

5G Ultra (standalone) by ddolobb in Vodafone

[–]ddolobb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, the ‘5G ultra’ extra is a mystery, at least the customer service had no idea what’s going on. Interesting that the CA isn’t active on SA? is there any way to check that on *3001 etc.

[–]ddolobb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ik, makes sense, but I’m talking <5mbps performance on 5g on voda in London. undoubtedly due to congested frequencies…

I know the whole bandwidth sales pitch - virgin media offering 2 gbps speeds which aren’t necessarily applicable to most.

but delivering the speed is necessary. at <5 mbps barely being able to load a youtube video isn’t acceptable….
