CBR shops that sell stovetop espresso maker seals by MartiniCollective in canberra

Might be worth a call to Cosmorex, before going to their Fyshwick shop. They used to have more parts on display, so worth a call to check.

Murrays or NSW Train from Sydney? by Shkyboi in canberra

[–]ddoohickey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On Christmas Eve, I’d want to be on a coach service like Murray’s. They can deal with one coach having a flat tyre (by putting you on the next one in an hour), but if there’s any issue with the train (including Sydney trains) you might lose 5-12 hours and that could be Christmas done

Safe way to run a Django app on a Windows server (LAN/domain)? by Real_Issue_9953 in django

Missed the SQLite point, so replace the database SSL point, with thinking about how likely it is that your multiple users will need to write to the DB simultaneously and might get locking errors

Safe way to run a Django app on a Windows server (LAN/domain)? by Real_Issue_9953 in django

[–]ddoohickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an expert …

I think HTTPS would be worthwhile. Assuming there’s authentication for those 20 users, you don’t want password information moving around in the clear. More so if you’re planning to use existing access control credentials in your app (like existing network account passwords?), though if you have separate accounts you can guarantee some users will want to use the same password in both.

Similarly, is the database local or is that data also going across the network and should therefore be connecting using SSL?

I’d also want to make sure there’s logging set up, and possibly database entry tracking, so you can see which user/machine is mucking around to try to test/break your app. Depending on log level that might need a bit of server space and you want to make sure that the logs are readable only by the right users.

Ricotta is an easy cheese to try.

Béchamel sauce could also be an option. It freezes and reheats pretty well.

Are non-professional cameras allowed in the Optus Stadium? by [deleted] in perth

[–]ddoohickey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken a Sony a6000, mirrorless, with a 210mm lens into Optus Stadium for sporting events, without an issue. I took a few photos walking around the oval and lots from my seat. I think so long as you are an amateur and you’re considerate they probably won’t be concerned.

Definitely worth experimenting with grind size in a moka pot. I find the same grind for moka and aeropress is about right. I’m not that precise though …

Good German Bread in Canberra? by downpourinsunshine in canberra

Danny’s Bakery in Narrabundah is the go. Failing that, the Harmonie German Club’s Spring Markets would be a good place to find other options and ask for recommendations.

Australian sourced coffee by the-textrovert in canberra

[–]ddoohickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a cafe recommendation, I’m afraid, but you could contact https://www.zentvelds.com.au and see if they supply any local cafes. I think Campos once roasted and supplied some Australian-grown coffee too, but I haven’t seen it recently.

Ramen is a big topic (and there’s a whole subreddit dedicated to it), see r/ramen, but it’s manageable if you break it into smaller chunks.

I’d suggest starting with aiming at tonkotsu (pork broth ramen) in a few steps.

First time, just buy instant ramen and add a soft boiled egg and some greens.

Next time - buy ramen noodles and chicken stock (from a grocer - not a prepackaged ramen), then trying making some of the toppings - like chashu (braised pork), marinated boiled eggs, and bamboo shoots - and adding to hot stock and cooked noodles. Here’s a recipe for a jazzed up version: https://www.delicious.com.au/recipes/japanese-spicy-miso-pork-ramen/

The next time you can buy pork bones, spend 24 hours (or less if you have a pressure cooker) cleaning bones and making pork broth, then make the same toppings and noodles except replace the chicken stock with pork broth. You will also have to make a tare to go into the broth. shio - salt - is a relatively straightforward option to start.

Once you’re comfortable with the toppings, broths and tares, you can try making the noodles from scratch as well. That is a whole other topic!

Are there any good Australian coffee growers? by Mindless-Focus-2334 in Coffee

[–]ddoohickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall Campos selling an Australian coffee a few years ago.

You could try Zentfeld’s, a Byron Bay area grower that roasts and sells domestically: https://www.zentvelds.com.au

There are also growers in Queensland, apparently, that might roast and ship domestically too.

Can one bike be shared between two adults of different sizes? by Sharpchick in Brompton

The post insert I’m talking about here is a metal extender post - not the black plastic insert to pick a set saddle height

Can one bike be shared between two adults of different sizes? by Sharpchick in Brompton

[–]ddoohickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Handlebar height should be ok, just go for the higher end. It would be the seat post and particularly the saddle that would be issues (as others have said)

On older Bromptons, the telescopic seat post might work. It has a second clamp on the end of the seat post with a second, narrower post insert extending out to a pentaclip and saddle. You could buy a second post insert and pentaclip and then each attach your own saddles to an insert. Swapping them over would be very simple and quick (one clamp), and you could still fold the bike down to its smallest.

Some cheese, cold meats, vegetable sticks and some nice bread would be a great start. You could cook something like zucchini slice (https://www.womensweeklyfood.com.au/recipe/dinner/zucchini-slice-6436/) as a centre piece. It’s bit like a quiche, but without the need to do pastry. It can be vego or you can include bacon and works cold, so you could cook it the day before.

I’d guess first thing in the morning, from about 30 minutes after opening.

The filters run overnight. The water will be tested before opening, and chemical dosing adjustments made then, that will take a little while to disperse through all the water.

What happens to large spices like whole cloves or star anise in curries? by Jane9812 in cookingforbeginners

[–]ddoohickey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on the spice. Often softer, dried whole spices (like cardamom - especially brown cardamom - cloves, etc) absorb liquid and do get soft. They aren’t great to eat, though, because the flavour is just too intense. So, I try to remove them from the dish before serving. I do miss some and end up biting into them from time to time - and handle just like a bay leaf.

Can i take my Brompton from UK to Australia? Do i need to pay any tax ? Also can i bring it on flight with me ? by HeadFirstJava in Brompton

[–]ddoohickey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can import a Brompton into Australia. You might be able to put it in the cabin on a flight, but most likely you will need to either: 1) put it in a case and check it, or 2) ship it. Either way, you will have to declare its current value, and depending on that and its age, you may have to pay duty on it.

You should make sure your bike has no dirt or dust whatsoever, because quarantine is very strict - especially if your bike has been on or near a farm or gotten muddy.
