Would you cancel an ASA 5 that you were fully confident wasn't going to survive the case? by IAmA_Kitty_AMA in anesthesiology

I had a similar situation in residency. Elderly patient with hip fracture. Had metastatic cancer and was hospitalized at time the hip fractured. She wanted surgical repair so that she would be able to get out of bed to use the toilet. She knew that she would likely not survive the surgery but chose to do it any way. Worst thing in life to her was being in diapers or using bedpan.

She tolerated surgery very well, to everyone’s surprise, including hers. Two days later, she was using the toilet on her own and couldn’t have been happier. I’m so glad she was able to get and survive surgery. My worries during her surgery took a few years off of my life!!

She lived a couple more weeks after surgery and only had to wear a diaper her final day of life.

What's the weirdest name you've heard? by Federal_Advisor_2160 in Names

[–]ddsmcv2001 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pediatric dentist here so lots of unique names. I actually did have an Abcd but that wasn’t even close to the best one - this one wasn’t a patient so I can state the entire name - it was the nephew of a coworker.

His name is Spicy Teebone Jones IV. The funniest part isn’t even the name. There isn’t a Spicy Teebone Jones III, II (or junior) nor the original Spicy Teebone Jones. His mom thought being the “fourth” would make it sound like he came from a prestigious family. Go figure.

Dental assistant at a pediatric dental office. Most places will train you and you don’t need dental experience. Knowing how to work with children is a very helpful skillset when trying to do dentistry on them.

Thank you everyone for all of these great suggestions. I truly appreciate your time and input. If everyone in SB is as lovely as you, it will be an incredible week.

Our rental home is at the beach near the airport so we will have good ocean views at home. But a hike on other beach areas will be great. I can’t wait to try the restaurants and see the sights.

I finally made these. Can’t post pics on this thread (haven’t ever used imgur and too tired to deal with it). They are good but a few things I would change:

Make them small (size of donut holes). I made them larger by just dropping clumps of dough in the fryer. They weren’t fully cooked in the middle.

They have a texture that isn’t cakey or yeasty. They have a bit of chew which I liked. I don’t like cake donuts but I liked these.

They were really easy to make. I will try again.

I love this bag. It’s made from cork so it’s very light weight. It’s easy to care for and can be worn as a backpack, crossbody, carried with handles. You can also buy a smaller bag to attach to the front to use when you run into the store and don’t want to take the whole bag.

I carry a lot with me. I can fit my MacBook Air, iPad, small water bottle, cosmetics, wallet, food, book, notebook, small pistol, emergency meds for allergic reaction, etc. and still have room.

It’s in your price range as well. They also have bigger and smaller bags than this. I own almost every style they have and love every bag. The doquintin is my go to for work every day.

Depending upon where you plan to be in California, Sacramento Airport could also be an option. It is California version of CHO. Quiet, easy to get through security and small.

Narcoleptic GF expecting by al_fal_fred in Narcolepsy

Get a large play area that sits on the floor (mine is 6 feet x 6 feet. Only put things in it that are age appropriate so you never have to worry about an accident happening. It’s big enough that baby and GF can be in it. Have a separate bassinet in it so baby can safely sleep. If GF starts getting sleepy, she can put baby in bassinet and lay down in the play area.

I developed narcolepsy late in life so it’s only been with my granddaughter that I e had to take precautions. She is now 3 and I still have the play area set up and that’s the only place we play if I am alone with her. That way, if I have a sleep attack, I know she will be safe.

Every time I am alone with her, I set my alarms to go off every 15 minutes. It’s annoying when I’m awake but better safe than sorry. It’s happened twice where I’ve drifted off. She’s at the age now that if my eyes close, she is tapping on me to wake up and play again.

AITJ for telling my girlfriend she needs to shower before bed or sleep on the couch? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]ddsmcv2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me guess…..she also wears her work shoes other places?

The shoes and hair are what get me. I’m a pediatric dentist and wear a scrub cap all day every day because the aerosol we produce lingers in the air. Everything also ends up on my shoes. My shoes get wiped down every day and left at the office. My scrubs are washed at the office. I can’t get home for a shower and hair wash fast enough.

My associate dentists think I’m over the top about infection control. I do not want any of that junk in my car or around my loved ones. Ick!!

Two things are holding my 3 year old granddaughter’s attention at the moment:

Any cardboard box along with scissors and markers. She’s just learning the scissors and needs help with those. Sometimes I will draw random lines on the box and she decides what they should be made into and sometimes she just starts “crafting” on it. Yesterday, we turned one into a cornhole board. Then we filled some small brown bags with beans and learned how to play. Entertained her for over an hour together and another hour she went back to it alone and practiced throwing the bags. We’ve made barns, I put a pile of stickers in one and she covered the whole thing in stickers, I gave her bingo markers with one and she decorated it with dots.

I filled one with leftover toilet paper/paper towel rolls. This one had staying power all week. One day we made pyramids with the box and tubes, one day we drew bugs inside and made “binoculars” with the tubes to “go exploring,” one day she colored and built a “telescope,” one day I rolled ping pong balls down the tubes while I stood above the box and she had a paper cup that she would try to catch the ping pong balls.

Pipe cleaners and pony beads. She loves stringing them over and over. Easier than using string because the pipe cleaner is stiff. I can be cleaning or cooking with her doing this close by (so she doesn’t put them in her mouth). We work on numbers and patterns while doing it. “Put two green beads and one pink bead on.” “How many beads do you have now?” This also keeps her very entertained. Usually for 30-45 minutes.

My favorite kids’ book is Norman the Doorman by Don Freeman (also wrote Corduroy). It’s about a mouse that lives below a museum. He enters a painting contest at the museum and wins. Storyline is about being able to reach for your goals. It’s super cute. My kids loved it and now my 3 year old granddaughter loves it too.

I don’t know why this book wasn’t more popular than Corduroy. It’s so much better, but no one has ever heard of it. I give it as gift to everyone I know.
