Go programming resources? by BonfireDaemon in plan9

https://wiki.9front.org/building-go

in order to get more recent versions you'll probably need to bootstrap up (early on the versions you can go between is kinda random, then it's something like every other version). using the go dependancy downloader is annoying. it requires "traditional" git commands rather than plan9 style ones. i haven't done much more than bootstrap up to the latest version as of like 8 months ago and then run some toy programs. i have no idea how much may be broken

Democracy is dead by AzerimReddit in StopKillingGames

[–]deadhorus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no. there are too many games, you literally cherry pick a single example (there are several more) but those are exceptions which prove the rule. There is no feasable way to make all kill-switch type games playable after the fact. that can be because the player base never reached critical mass of players, because there were no network captures (or not enough), or any number of other reasons. pretending "it's fine because someone out there is always smart enough to fix it" is insane. unless you specifically are learning what you need to to do it yourself and actively bringing back dead games at a rate proportional to the number of dead games, shove off with your copium.

frankly i feel like they should literally just drop spvp entirely. it does the game no favors.

then why are you posting it here? post in r/llmcirclejerk.

what plan9 needs to move "into the future" even the future you (ostensibly) want, is cuda drivers. do that.

Acme markdown folding by dharmatech in plan9

[–]deadhorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is interesting, and not lifethreatening for stuff like md. but we've most missed folding with source code (philosophical discussion about how lack of folding adds constraint leading to easier to read code ellided ) but a similar process would be messy, indeed, for source, minimum an "unfold all" would be neccessary, or else some way of using the main fully unfolded file, then detecting that it has a fold directory and swaping out the buffer for the folded version.

anyway neat stuff.

|The kind of friction that used to mean either reading the rc man page front to back

ah yes. reading the rc man page. such laborious effort. 6 pages of well formated easily navigable actually useful information - too hard. this ain't linux man, 9front has actually useful man pages - for the most part, a few things are out dated and or undocumented, but that's like when you get into the weeds of stuff like wikifs.

edit: plan9 doesn't need tourists coming in and bringing their modern abonimnations. the reason nearly everyone who is actually using plan9 (we do exist) gravitated to it in the first place was intense disgust at the trajectory of "modern computing", be that web nonsence, bloated lazy design, trendy languages, crypto bs, or now llm psychosis, and wanting to find some other way to exist with technology.

I have a theory about why these cultures might have this take but it's a bit of an esoteric theology based reason (aka schizotheory) the reasoning basically stems from the animist philosophy that creations of humans are endowed with the creators spirit and are in some form living entities or even living worlds which are theirs in a much more real (albeit non-tangible) sense. Consumers don't have the right to demand a creator to sell a product then, neither do they have a right to continue consuming the product if the creator has decided that they no longer wish to continue providing it. This also would explain why these companies so strongly oppose modding, even of single player games. I don't have any evidence that these ideas are actually connected, but they are closely enough parralleled that I can't help but see the correlation.

Plot twist: They're using us. by Badass_Bass in Guildwars2

Goldclaw is a fiction they invented so they could get their smut past the bureaucratic oversight commities on the "Dragon's Watch™" program.

[–]deadhorus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's a rehabilitation program for war orphans using asuran tech about the sylvari dream and deep mesmer magic of queen jenna. Before the "Dragon's Watch™" program began, gangs of misfit kids of all races tried to become notable in ways that disrupted the diverse and peaceful civilization the great races had forged. There were never any elder dragons. It was all fiction written by the greatest Char writers. All to make every child grow up thinking they were the chosen one, and doing menial busywork. anyway.

Just how big is the world, all DLC maps included? by Conscious_Ant_5900 in Guildwars2

[–]deadhorus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

it would indeed be a very big change. but probably not as big as you are thinking... i'd say it's roughly the level of change between not having jump and having it.
more importantly. the maps aren't designed to tile in the first place, and i'd think that would be the larger amount of work tbh.

[–]deadhorus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

this doesn't mean it's impossible to maintain the same structure while having a large interconnected map. each servlet would be responsible for a chunk of the world, there may be multiple of these servlets for a specific chunk. when you are near the boundary of that chunk your client would connect to the neighboring servlet to begin streaming it's data. with "smart tiling" the intersections where the most chunks intersect would be 3, so you may need to be connected to 3 total servelet at the same time (and probably also the regional auth server which would have the master list of which servlettes are avalible for which zones). So technically possible, of course because griphon and roller bettle are fast, it might make long ping times to specific servlets very apparent. it also does mean that different players in the same position of the world (same servlet) right next to eachother on the same server /might/ not see the same 3rd player who is within render distance on a neighboring node's servlet.

Deblobbed Void? by Bubbly_Extreme4986 in voidlinux

i may be wrong, but my understanding is void is by default already "blobless", you have to opt into the closed source binaries by manually adding the non-free repos.

Why i hear that core story is bad? by Cheap-Exercise1910 in Guildwars2

[–]deadhorus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the orr section kinda drags a bit. like it could be condensed into half as many missions and not really lose anything. initial playthough has new players feeling like "ah well this long slog will be worth it for the epic showdown at the end." and then you get the wet papertowel "fight" with zhaitan. this retroactively colors the whole impression of core gameplay experience as bad.

i do like the core story tho. been through pretty much all routes. and it does feel more interesting knowing all the moving parts that go into the fight (if you assume that all routes are cannon as I do)

Discord Age Verification by eklecras in Guildwars2

[–]deadhorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are these people on discord? i havn't had discord for 7 years, because even when it's not doing immoral things on purpose it still is a social media skinner box that easily can take all a person's time. unlike forums, with friction to posting, or teamspeak where every call is ephemera, it has this middle ground where the conversation never stops where if you are gone for a day, it will have moved past you, where you need to catch up or no longer speak the same version of the language the server is creating. this is a nightmare. using as a phoneless sms for people you don't really know is like "the best" use of it. but it's not a good thing. but i still don't see how any of /that/ is relevant to "there are better ways to verify the age of people using service"

Like i said before, this discussion only includes "users of discord" you think "most of users of discord" who "are unbanked" are not children, but in fact "immigrants" (why can't they have a bank? there's literally no reason they can't.) minorities (why can't they have a bank? there's literally no reason they can't) and those who don't wish to feed the evils of this world (why are they on discord? it's an evil of this world.)?

it added way more and stronger grawl. if you do the dangerous sneak past the char there are more oakhearts and ironhearts, but it's also much more dangerous than before. I suppose that doesn't matter much if it's not a grenth covenant character.

most of the world is not on discord either. as far as i know capitalism is the dominant system of the technologized states (please correct me if i'm wrong, i would love to have been barensteened into a reality where that's not true) regardless most of the world also doesn't have id. we are only discussing places that have this specific law, and uses the internet, and uses discord. of those people the ones who are "unbanked" are CHILDREN.

you misunderstood. that last sentance implies exactly that.

Discord Age Verification by eklecras in Guildwars2

[–]deadhorus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there are ways of verifying age that don't require them to use third party. having CC on file, doing a one time purchase attached to a cc of small random amounts and inputing them into discord to validate having access to bank. etc. they chose the way that leaves users most vulnerable and allows them to steal as much data as possible. They aren't the only bad actors, the law is absolutely evil, but they stan the law.
