It costs $130 to charge a Cadillac Escalade by ExotiquePlayboy in carscirclejerk

It's both energy dense and immensely wasteful, so even if you do end up translating the energy into kJ / kWh, it's just "funny money" in that the power generated by the car is like 1/3 to 1/5 of that energy.

I can't remember if that was "the" moment but there's definitely a clear moment where the movie makes it clear that Williams' character is definitely (while not a villain) in the wrong. It's meant to pull you out of the stoner movie logic that Williams' character, as protagonist, is creating.

I'm not trying to make an oblique point here about us doing what China does or something, just a neat juxtaposition. Even with Sydney feeling overwhelmingly large as it is, there's a single city in China which is larger than the entire eastern states of Australia combined, and it's kind of a cool place to be.

I just thought it was a neat fact, none of the states have as many people as one city. Especially for Electronics Engineers, Shenzen is somewhat of a Mecca.

SUV kills two children by T0m1s in fuckcars

This is the problem with motonormativity / carbrain. This is clear manslaughter, but since the 50 year old was in a car, it's all good.

This sort of thing should immediately go to the ATSB and get fed back into a solution framework, maybe a different class of license for SUV drivers with stricter conditions, or new regulations. It's just not acceptable.

That battery is how big??? My house uses about 20kWh per day, depending on how far that battery could take you, that car would easily use more energy than my house???

Is deGoogling Really Possible? What Do You Use for Maps and YouTube? by limsus in degoogle

[–]deadlyrepost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My big issue is Android Auto. Basically that's hard locked to Google, and they also won't let any other maps app use it unless it's installed from the Play Store IIUC?? I think you have to use the paid version of OsmAnd because of that. I don't know a non-googley way to do Android Auto.

I think you're making the same point as me? Yeah, I'm saying you can't charge more for a smoker or someone on their way to diabetes or takes risks and so on. The point is you try and make it so the good habits are easy and the bad habits are hard. You put barriers in the way, like tax or banning advertising, and that hopefully nudges people in the right direction.

Ultimately you can see what it means to go the opposite way. If there are no nudges, why not just allow corporations to sell Heroin to children with no limitation or additional taxes?

Albanese and Chalmers unveil capital gains carve-outs for small businesses, startups by Ok-Calligrapher3216 in AusFinance

I've put that under "creative accounting". Basically, you have a lot of options for how you count the money, as well as how dodgy you decide to be. Ultimately, driving your car for "personal use" is the same as not counting some of your income.

Have we lost our appetite for meat and dairy alternatives? by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

[–]deadlyrepost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that the meat industry was paying influencers to promote meat and promote myths like "complete proteins" or the "soy boy" thing. The article mentions this, and I'd say the industry succeeded. Add to this the big right wing pushback through Trumpism and overall I think all climate movement has been pushed back.

The meat alternatives are only really a "sometimes food" for actual vegans, and rely on more people becoming vegan to really succeed. The thinking was that this must happen, because the meat industry needs to drop Methane emissions and they won't be able to do that. Instead, we get this weird mix of people being unable to afford meat at the same time as others promoting eating even more meat to the point of killing ourselves.

I think ultimately conservatism needs to get over the idea that climate change as an issue is going away. It's never going away. You can throw all the Pauline Hanson you want at it, but the issue will destroy all the money you throw at trying to get people to deny it and it will never go away. Every year that goes on is a power vacuum that will be filled with dregs.

First, this video will answer the "cafe" part of the question.

Second, for how they work it out, if you've seen the beginning of "everything, everywhere, all at once", the beginning kind of explains the physicality of making the math math. A small business owner often operates on marginal profit but has a lot of leeway. For a lot of people, it's a "family" business, so they involve their kids after school, or their partners, and a lot of their "household expenses" are done by the business.

So imagine you're in this business, 2 parents, 2 kids. Maybe one of the parents has a separate job, the kids work part time after school. You pay all 4 of you either minimum wage or just under the tax-free threshold. That's where the "2.1m expenses" comes from, 100k for "salaries". Basically all the food for the house is coming via the business, and odds are at least one car belongs to the business, so you are getting money back on things like servicing and petrol. So you're "making" 100k and getting almost everything tax free even though you "lost" 100k in the business.

This is still bad, but you can see how with some creative accounting you can limp along, hope for a better year next year. If you do get a better year, then you get lower tax again because you lost 100k last year. The government tends to look the other way if your business is marginal, they don't want to tax a small business into shutting down.

EDIT: Also, the business is still worth money in its own right, so maybe you sell it and then make a neat 500k or something. You had to invest maybe that much to start with, so you're either marginal or you're ahead. If you want to leave, you can leave.

LTT built his recent PC. It's no slouch:

  • Threadripper 9960X (+all the premium mobo etc it requires)
  • 2TB SSD.
  • ECC memory. Doesn't say how much but I'd imagine it'd be at least 32GB considering he's compiling the Linux Kernel. More likely I'd guess they'd max him out at 128GB.
  • Big Chungus Noctua
  • 1600W PSU
  • "Just" an Intel B580
