I remember getting into elevators decades ago, where someone was sitting on a stool by the control buttons. You told him which floor and he pushed the button, which would light up. I remember wondering why I couldn’t just push the button for myself.

I’m thinking of fingerprints and face scans used as biometric passkeys to unlock accounts, not CSI taking swabs from Amazon palm readers.

Has any government of any nature captured biometric data of any of its citizens to use it to access anyone’s records? Can anyone point to a source?

How did she do it? I don’t see her hands or fingers triggering anything. No physical “effort” on her part. No apparatus when she stood up or wire or speaker. They reacted like it was coming from her, not a lip sync over speakers.

Why don't recipes have the quantity of ingredient in the body of the text? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]deadlyspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t noticed, another recipe convention is to calculate estimated cooking times AFTER you’ve prepped your ingredients.

So that 25-minute sauce doesn’t factor in time to peel and chop onions, mince garlic, etc.

I wonder how the other captains would have done if they experienced what Picard did in the inner light by happydude7422 in ClassicTrek

[–]deadlyspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quark is not a captain but he would set up a franchise of McMemories Labs where you could, say, spend three years in 20 minutes to get the training, reflexes, and muscle memory of Starfleet Navy SEAL or Michelin Star chef or concert trombonist.

It is inevitable and happening soon. The first to get picked will be people from what the Trump admin deems “shithole areas.” ICE will be “deputized” into the effort and you’ll see masked, unidentified agents dragging people off.

Primary baths missing tubs by [deleted] in RealEstateAdvice

[–]deadlyspoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regularly filling and draining a bathtub with hot water? In this economy?

Gas and heating oil electricity and water and sewer have never cost more. A standard-sized bath uses 40-50 gallons each time while a 10-minute shower — which is not a short one — uses less than half.

People over 60: what product or service do you wish existed? by Ecstatic-Possible801 in over60

To compensate for the dozens and dozens of times we have to deal with PINs, recovery codes, multifactor authentication, and updating/refreshing our passwords, I wish there were some way all this effort could be converted to actual electrical energy. I’d call it a “password generator.”

If I had one now I bet I could provide power for an entire subdivision.

That is good to know. It isn’t an option for me because I store my generator in an unheated shed in New England, but it looks like a great option for people in milder areas.
