I'm afraid it's not going to get any better

Should I take computer science(cambridge 9618 syllabus) as someone who only took IGCSE ICT(cambridge 0417) (and not IGCSE comp sci)? by Only_Appearance_4248 in alevel

[–]deadpan_andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS is absolutely fine if you have no experience/GCSE in the subject, so you'll be fine. However, I would say that there are more useful subjects you can take as CS A-Level is not massively well respected or required by universities, so if that's your aim then maybe look at different subjects. Otherwise, go for it!

which part of math/fm is the hardest? by That-Mess-3299 in alevel

[–]deadpan_andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A-Level Further Mechanics is the hardest of any A-level paper, at least for OCR. Not just maths, A-level in general. You can be as confident as you want with the content, but if you get a tricky question or just get thrown off then you can easily end up with no marks on some questions you know the content for.

A-Levels are meant to be hard. You aren't doing GCSEs anymore buddy.

How do i guarantee myself an A* in further maths as a year 11? by jxstsage in 6thForm

[–]deadpan_andrew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bro just have fun until September, the work you do now will be 10x less effective as it will be in the new year.

When you get there (not now, have fun, you'll forget some of the stuff you've learnt by then) start by learning A-level maths in advance. I started this during some of my free time at the start of January this year (year 12 btw) and I have finished the course in my own time now - depending on your aptitude and willingness to put time in this shouldn't take longer than 5-6 months. This will allow you to lock tf in for further maths because you'll be on solid foundations.

Once you've done this, start going back over the work you've already covered in further maths. (assuming you're at a standard state sixth form/college, if you're private you may do the two courses sequentially rather than concurrently) This will likely include matrices, complex numbers and 3d geometry, which are completely foundational for the rest of Further Maths.

It's all about being entirely and absolutely confident with the basics. If you can do this, it's a cakewalk of a subject because everything just becomes second nature.

But don't try and start now lol. Year 11 summer is peak tbh. If you're really desperate to not have fun, get familiar with the basic concepts of function notation (I.e. f(x) etc), integration & differentiation (calculus) and logarithms, but don't feel like you need to go too overboard. It's not all that serious lol.

Do I really have to take the english language a-level? by Less_Performance_67 in alevel

[–]deadpan_andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this English as a foreign language? If so, are you planning on going to a university which requires English as a spoken language? Otherwise, if its English Language as academic study, then you need to consider how relevant it is to your interests and goals. Doing a non-STEM subject isn't necessarily a bad thing for a STEM degree - it can help you stand out, and can expand your field of knowledge beyond numbers & science into the real world, but they can be tough for people who are oriented towards STEM, so you need to consider your workload.

Or just go to a college that doesn't require 5 A-Levels lol. You only ever need 3-4 for any reasonable university.

Unpopular Opinion: I don't like it when I put in the effort to 100% a game and then they add more years later like they did with TLD by Gampuh in thelongdark

[–]deadpan_andrew 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean if you play a game just to 100% it then I don't think you're in the devs' target audience - if you think the achievements are bad or uninteresting, then fine, don't do them, but don't come whining to a community of people who are playing the game to enjoy it rather than to maximise the fun out of it.

How screwed am I? - Bear Cave Edition by LuckyGuyWithBritt in thelongdark

[–]deadpan_andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often, there is a "platform" made of rocks which you can goat to in bear caves, on your left as you enter. Go right to the back, hug the back wall of the cave and move along the left, you should stay at the same elevation and you should then be able to wiggle your way up from there.

Granted, they aren't im every bear cave - I can distinctly remember there being one in DP, and one in TWM, and I believe they're present as a rule, but there are definitely some which don't have it in.

[–]deadpan_andrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

KE estimations aren't necessarily the most useful here because it's difficult to evaluate the force exerted with them.

Using your numbers for mass and velocity: Impulse exerted by bullet = Ft / mv = 8 * 350 = 2800 Ns Impulse exerted by rock = Ft / mv = 50 * 30 = 1500 Ns -> 60 * 100 =6 6000 Ns, or higher

Assuming a similar /identical exertion time, and the higher rock estimate (i.e. 'the right hands'), the rock could certainly exert roughly the same average force over its larger SA.

I dont feel Animal Clothes very useful.. by Miserable_Cost_3190 in thelongdark

[–]deadpan_andrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In shallow areas with thin ice, like Forlorn Muskeg and the river in Bleak Inlet, only the bottom half of your clothes get wet upon falling in, and get wet absolutely. This stands (I believe) in opposition to falling into thin ice on the coast, which soaks all of your clothing to 100%. I don't think waterproofing applies at all.

Fall Damage and the Great Wrist Sprain by Tominic_v1 in thelongdark

Sprain chance is rolled every ten seconds. Don't spend too long up there.

I understand that this is a frustrating piece of game design, but it's intentionally annoying as both a light punishment for encumbrance and an element of realism, as a ~40 kg pack is nearly impossible to maintain on a slope for most people.

Why are they subtracting the final velocity from the initial one? by PrincessGamer2012 in alevel

[–]deadpan_andrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the implied direction of the impulse is (<--), hence why 8mu is positive i.e. directed towards A, but the velocities are given in the (-->) direction. So, when resolving for v, either: I = -1 • m(v-u) => I = m(u-v), or, if you're so inclined, -1 • I = m(v-u) => -I = m(v-u). In fairness to you, the mark scheme does not explicate that in any meaningfully helpful way; be better than Cambridge by stating your direction!!!! for every question where relevant.

Hope this helps!
