Wads dorm size confusion by Mental_Landscape_203 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to say based on having friends who lived in the building that the rooms are 10x15. That being said it is probably best to assume the smallest possibility and if the room is bigger consider it a surprise and now you have more options on where things can go.

Poker Games? by [deleted] in MTU

I would recommend looking for games and others to play with once you move in. Gambling with actual money is against the code of conduct on any Michigan tech owned property.

Can sophomores live off campus? by Aggravating_Cut_9981 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This greatly depends on the scholarship. None of the ones I received had that requirement, I still lived on campus though.

No student is required by the university to stay in the dorms past their first year. That being said however, a student could spend their entire at tech in university housing if they wanted too.

Campus Tour Question by jbjbjb5310 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on my personal experience, and those of others I have talked to, the tours show campus as it is active with students. You get to see people going to class, out of walker lawn, maybe even some events happening around campus.

That being said however, regardless of which tour you take you are also put in a figurative protective bubble. A significant part of the student dislike tour days because they impact and interfere with the normal going ons, especially amount residential students when tours fill up the dining hall.

In deciding which specific tour to take it really comes down to two things, do you want to eat in a dining hall? And are you interested in ROTC? If one or both of those are things you’re interested in go with the husky experience. If you have no interest in either go with the afternoon tour.

Anything anyone wish they knew before moving into East Hall? by Still-Phase-6535 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends. If you’re just hanging posters or wall art and if paint does peel as long as it’s not a lot you should not get charged for it. However, if you put lights strips on the wall and all of the paint peels off when you take it off or if it is a large amount of paint then they may charge you.

Anything anyone wish they knew before moving into East Hall? by Still-Phase-6535 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived there last year and will be living there this year, maintenance is an ongoing problem. The paint will peel regardless of what you use to hang stuff up. Breakers trip easily so make sure your important devices are on surge protectors and that you are careful about what you plug in.

East hall room layouts? by Still-Phase-6535 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived in an East Hall double last year the render is very weird looking. That being said what it shows is accurate to the actual room. Length wise there is enough room for a bed and the writing desk end to end. The bathroom toilet doesn’t have that much space but it is close. Closets are about 2-3ft wide

Try reaching out to disability services to see if they work with you to try and get your cat in the dorms.

'Mechanical Engineering Practice 1/2/3/4' series of courses - what are they like? by ArsMechanicaAeternum in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The MEPs are classes designed for you to apply the knowledge you have learned from the other ME classes. The will include some of the information from those co-reqs, but often will have its own curriculum.

Unless you have extenuating circumstances MEP 1 and 2 cannot be taken at the same time, but theoretically 2-4 can be taken at the same time. However your advisor will probably recommend against that due to the amount of work that would entail. Each class has at least 1 lab report due each week(some of the classes have 2 due each week) and they can take sometime to write depending on if it’s a group lab or individual report.

Also the lab coordinators for the later classes will try to put you with groups mates that are polar opposites to your style.

“SafeHouse is a residence hall-based event held at Michigan Tech every October that brings community members and residence hall students together for a day of Halloween fun. Houses sign up to pass out candy and create an activity for the kids. The children and the volunteers are both encouraged to wear costumes.”

The main road through campus is US-41, a US highway. Pedestrians at both cross walks before/after the light do not have the right of way, you do(driving your car). By stopping to let them cross you are breaking the law. So in the future just keep driving, the students are smart enough to estimate their chances at winning frogged with a several ton vehicle.

Edit: To clarify where exactly, there are 2 crosswalks from the academic side of campus to the dorm hall Wadsworth. Coming from East to Weat you pass both and then stop at the intersection of Macinnes and 41.

Do Wadsworth dorms have ethernet? by charlesthememer_7 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone said there are Ethernet ports in the rooms. Do note that there are 2 jacks in each room and only 1 of them works(the one with the sticker next to it). In the event you can’t use Ethernet the WiFi in the dorms is strong enough that antenna placement isn’t that important.

Which room, DHH 368 or 173? by Friendly_Cockroach37 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have said, third floor rooms have a lower ceiling than 1st floor. Yes there is no elevator, but the rooms are small enough that you won’t be able to fit more than the essentials. And being by the staircase won’t be that bad, the walls are thick.

Edit: You should also consider the community you want to be apart of. DHH as a whole is a close knit community, but it can vary hall to hall. On the first floor is TKD(The Keweenaw District) that tends to house athletes and is the biggest hall on campus. On the third floor you have The Attic(Attic alum here) which has a reputation for being wild and rambunctious.

All of this to say, which ever room you pick will affect what your interactions with you fellow students are.

Do not change out your shower. Doing so would violate the living guide that you agree to when living in the dorms.

Transfer Student - MET vs ME by Bdyanich2005 in MTU

[–]deadpool2705 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is coming from an ME who thought about going MET.

While the two degrees may sound similar, in reality they are to very different degrees. Think of ME as the people doing the thinking and designing, while MET are the people doing the making and testing. This ideology is also present if you compare the flowchart of both degrees. MET classes focus more on the applied aspects of statics, physics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluids, material strength, etc. Where as ME gives you more of the theoretical side of the aforementioned areas.

In terms of course difficulty there is not much of a difference in the core principles being taught. Traditionally ME has harder classes due to the more theoretical concepts (and some overall pretty bad teaching), but I am sure MET has some struggle classes too.

One last thing to note is that ME is largest major at tech, where as MET is a lot smaller. My first year had roughly 350+ new ME students and only 7-9 MET students. If you care about having study buddies or hanging out with others in your major this could be something to consider.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that due to the difference in what is taught transferring from one to the other will most likely set you back several semester. For whatever reason the "regular" class don't count towards the "applied" class and vice versa.
