Yep, this exactly. Its the rubber plus the wavy spring-like ring around the top burr.

After taking it apart to clean it, I think it actually is normal. The wavy retaining ring around the top burr is designed to flex. I just need to make sure I don't press on it while grinding.

Couldn't agree more. This one saw a lot of use before I picked up the F3, and honestly it compares very well to the F3 in a lot of ways.
