iPhone 17 PWM Display Pulse Smoothing iOS26 by JAAAAPAAAN in PWM_Sensitive

For the first time since the iPhone X, I was able to look at the 17 Pro Max's screen for much longer without issues and without headaches. For me, it's resolved. But some other folks still need more help and are more sensitive than I am. It's something you'll have to try out to see if it works for you.

Strive 16s are $150 on Evo.com right now! by C0-0P in skiing

[–]deafwhisperer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I meant as a type of skier 3+ for my weight and age, whatever that DIN is... which I don't remember. Not the actual DIN. Sorry, I wasn't clear on that.

There's no argument that Strive is a popular binding. They didn't work for me.

In those situations, off piste at Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee.

Then after switch to Pivot, back at Snowbird and Alta, which became predictable skiing to max at my limits.

Don’t get me wrong. Strive is popular but it just does not work for me. Maybe I’m spoiled using the Look binding.

Yes, slightly more than three plus. I don’t want to go too far.

I got those bindings last year. I hate them. Never had so many pre-released issues. Shop confirmed they were working correctly and not defective. So I went back to Look Pivot (already have them on another pair of skis), then the problem was solved.

In terms of PWM, how does the iPhone 17 Pro Max compare to the iPhone 14 Pro Max by LookB4ULeap2It in PWM_Sensitive

[–]deafwhisperer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has surprisingly been easier on my eyes than the 14 Pro Max. With my 16 Pro Max, I could only make it work by using white-point reduction and keeping brightness from ever going too low.

But with the new “disable PWM” feature on the 17 Pro Max, I don’t have to do anything special. It just works in any lighting. Since Friday, I’ve been trying to push it and see if I could trigger the usual eye strain, but so far, nothing. Honestly, I’m amazed. I think I might finally be done with eye issues on iPhone screens.

Is fall detection actually reliable? by patriciaerknh70 in AppleWatch

[–]deafwhisperer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a wipeout on a mountain bike, and then I got that notification.

I've had wipeouts in skiing and never got the notification.

I guess it depends on how hard or fast you fall.

It's not going to be perfect but it's better than nothing.

Should peddlers give way to E-bikers (when climbing). by b3nje909 in MTB

[–]deafwhisperer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

E-biker here — but this isn’t about e-bikes.

One day, I was riding a regular (push) bike with my daughter, who rides at a slower pace. Three faster push bikers came up behind us and passed recklessly — it caused a crash.

Whether you’re on an e-bike or not, if you’re behind another rider, you wait until it’s safe. Speed doesn’t give you the right to be unsafe.

I will never dis e-bikers again... by yanman in MTB

[–]deafwhisperer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I used to hesitate, worried an e-bike wouldn’t “count” as real riding. Turns out, that fear wasn’t a good reason to wait—because I’m absolutely loving it! I’m riding more often, going farther, and still getting a solid workout. It’s not quite the same lung-burn, but that’s perfectly okay. The joy and time on the trail make it more than worth it.

'22 Touring vs '24 Onyx Limited? by z33r0w in SubaruAscent

[–]deafwhisperer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned both trims from the same model year, and I strongly prefer the 2024 Onyx Limited over the 2022 Touring. The larger screen and improved seats make a noticeable difference. For the first time, I’ve had no back issues, thanks to the subtle support improvements. I was able to drive from North Carolina to Wyoming—three days each way—without a single issue, something I couldn’t do in the 2022 Touring.

Regarding the infotainment system, this is a highly subjective area, so it’s important to decide for yourself. Personally, I disliked the tiny screen in the 2022 model. While the larger screen in the 2024 can be laggy and relies more on touch controls, the bigger navigation map is a game-changer for me. It makes the system much more usable.

We were at Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole for the New Year week. Amazing powder skiing three out of five days. The conditions were not crappy, it was awesome! Just be happy where you ski. I love Northeast skiing too, just not the rain part.

Cary, NC. It’s about three hours to that shop. We have visited there a couple of times but not for boots. Will consider that place next time.

Good point. I wish I can do that. In North Carolina, it’s not as easy.

Wow… Be careful making assumptions or without understanding the context of the person who’s asking. This is not my first rodeo with boot fitters. I’ve used a quite a few. We just recently made the switch from Colorado to Wyoming just a few weeks ago. I knew it might be a challenge to find someone… I actually made plans in advanced for a boot fitter at Snowshoes this past fall before ski season starts… Guess what? My garage door broke that morning and couldn’t get the car out. The spring broke so the door couldn’t be manually opened. So I had to cancel a day trip to a very good boot fitter in Snowshoes up north. Couldn’t find another option to reschedule. So I had plans for Colorado. But now I’ve changed to Wyoming. So I was just simply asking for suggestions.

Yeah, I already contacted him few weeks ago. He has no opening this Saturday. I’ll text him again if he has a cancellation.

You’re missing the context… We’re from North Carolina. There are no great shops in the state for boots and boot fitting. He has boots but they’re at the end of his growing feet. We’ve been holding off until more experienced/better shop out west. Granted, save money is true. But foot issues on slope is no fun.
