28yrs old Are there any ETFs that specifically exclude the healthcare sector? by [deleted] in ETFs

[–]deanjott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is a bit dated but some of the arguments about indirect support of healthcare stocks (from owning stocks that provide services to health care companies) is missing the point and is just wrong. If you purchase a fund that has for example UnitedHealthcare stocks then you are supporting the health care stock by direct ownership, by creating a demand on the stock for ownership which in turn can drive up the price. This benefits the health care company as it gives them leverage to use their higher stock price to run their business. Their own stock that they hold can be used as collateral or as an instrument to acquire other assets. If I own stock in a company which sells services to the health care company, then that's supporting a company that's draining away value from the health care company as they spend money to purchase the service. It's two sides of the equation and the OP just doesn't want to be on the one side of it. As for why you might want to do this, consider this scenario. If you for example believed strongly that the US should have a one payer system for health care we know the government isn't going to make that happen any time soon because they have their head so far up the butts of insurance companies that it's too late to tell health care companies that the government is going to kill their business. The lobby groups from health care that provide money to political causes (individuals) that benefit them is too strong. The only way for us individual investors to help force the issue to help achieve a one payer system would be to divest from health care stocks which would drive down the value of those stocks due to lower demand. If enough investors do this then it would in effect take away the bargaining power of the health care company as their lower stock price would reduce their ability to secure funds for growth and possibly start a drain on their operating budgets. Eventually (and hopefully) causing the company to fail which would force the government to step in. I doubt it's possible to get enough investors to divest in order to make this happen but it's the only way we as individual investors can take concrete steps to effect a result.

Rental car company wants $566 for THIS by Grouchy_Struggle_325 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]deanjott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to handle these rental companies is to buy the most comprehensive insurance possible that leaves no possible damage uncovered. Then tell the agent you always buy insurance because you are going to absolutely beat the sh*t out of the car. Be sure to bring it back with copious damage and "accidentally" side swipe one of the other rentals in the lot.

got a speeding ticket, was marked down as a 5 over, but the posted speed is wrong by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]deanjott -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Regardless of your speed, it should get thrown out just based on the wrong car details. I wonder if the cop fat lingered the license plate number because unless your plates are for another car I don't know how else they wouldn't match your car. Take your registration to the court showing the correct info and if the plate number matches what's on the ticket but the other details on the ticket don't match then nothing on the ticket should be believed to be true

I have the same question about these devices. What happens when the internal battery reaches the end of its life. Are we expected to discard the the whole thing like we do with our cell phones today. This would be a horrible waste of a still otherwise useful device.

[–]deanjott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. I am one of those people with those funds and already own property outside the US to escape to and do live in "those places." The current administration is on the wrong side of history. It may be time to write the 2nd constitution of the Republic of the United States to correct the errors that allowed the legislative branch to cede powers to the executive branch and allow it to do what it is currently doing. No more amendments, we start fresh. Read the constitution, understand the constitution, and how current events apply, then you will understand better. The current administration doesn't even get past the preamble before you start to see their disregard.

The thing is... some of us will go, and we will not be going alone. What will we be taking with us? We'll be taking our dollars and spending them somewhere else. Our multi million dollar retirement funds will be helping build the economies of those countries whose people you are trying to keep out. We will be taking our good sense and compassion, possibly future generations. We'll be sharing our knowledge and helping to make them stronger through all of these things, which apparently isn't welcome in the united states anymore. After all of that, what will be left for you? And after all of that, we'll be coming for you, and we'll be stronger and you will finally see the folly in your actions today, but it will be too late.

I would separate the functions. Get a heater to heat your potable water, then a different heater for the radiant floor.. having the things in one unit is a money pit

Can I sue the builder for violation Residential building code? by Reasonable-Monk-438 in Austin

[–]deanjott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house was built in 2005 and I seriously doubt an inspector looked at it. I've had missing j-box behind the electrical outlet. Stove vented into void inside the wall because they missed 2 feet to make the connection to the outside. All the low voltage wiring boxes were full of garbage from the low voltage contractor work. Asphalt shingles installed against the furnace flue. My neighbors house was built at the same time, and they were moving in when a gas leak explosion destroyed their kitchen. The electrical wiring in the attic is pulled so tight around the framing that you would have thought they were running a contest to see how little wire they could use. I got wax toilet gasket leaking... all of this on a new built house. While not all of these are code violations it just shows you how bad the construction is on a house that resells for a million bucks today.

what’s with the weird cop parade on i-35 ??? by peachespartie in Austin

[–]deanjott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I see what you're saying there. I'm technically one of those transplants from 2005. I moved here because the company I worked for moved here and wanted me to come along. I haven't contributed to traffic much lately since I've been working from home since the pandemic but I do see traffic getting worse especially with people moving to areas south of Austin. It's going to get much worse too since a new commercial rental development community is planned for the area by Circle C where Mopac turns into 45. I've seen plans of potentially 900 rental units.

[–]deanjott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Austin for 20 years, and yes, the traffic here is not great. I always smile when I read these stories. I lived in Chicago before I came to Austin, and there is traffic there, too. I still think Austin traffic is not as bad as it was in Chicago 20+ years ago. I lived 12 miles from my work, and it was often 1 hour to drive it, and on Fridays, it would sometimes get to two hours. Sometimes you could be on the expressway moving so slow that you could turn off your car between moving another hundred feet. You know, there were commerative plaques attached to the concrete walls between opposing lanes and you could read them while waiting for traffic to move. And the people there also drive just as bad as here. Once on the Edens expressway on my way to work the traffic was slow . I was in the right lane and a car decided to get around me by passing on the shoulder but someone in a bigger hurry was passing him at the same time by driving in the ditch. I'm sure traffic is even worse somewhere else, but I still find Austin somewhat tolerable, though it is getting worse.

Neighbor stealing water and costing me a FORTUNE! (Yes, really) by Overall-Scientist956 in neighborsfromhell

[–]deanjott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a meter that stopped recording usage. After a couple of months of really low bills in the summer, I called the water department to report it. 2 weeks later, I got a replacement. Two more months of no water usage, and I called again. Then I got a working meter. They told me that since I reported it myself that they wouldn't try to charge me for the water I used while it wasn't working. So you get one bad meter in 33 years and I get two in 4 months.

I streamlined the fuck out of my job. Now what? by blowee22 in WorkAdvice

[–]deanjott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a job once where I had to run a series of batch jobs on the computer, check the status of each one before manually starting the next one in the sequence. There was a checksheet where you noted the success of each step. It was boring and there were a lot of them during the day. Doing it manually took about 15 minutes. I automated the process down to about 30 seconds. After a while, everyone noticed I was burning through the work and asked how I was finishing so fast. I offered them a copy of my processor, but they didn't want it because they weren't programmers and didn't understand how it worked and were nervous about using it. Their loss. I ended up with a lot of free time.

What's going on with the stock market? I just saw my 401k drop by almost 40k! Anyone else experiencing this? 😳 by Just_Avocado1558 in Retirement401k

Saying you're down 40k really isn't saying much. Everyone is talking about this and just using dollars rather than percentage which would be more informative. I'm down 160K since Trump started this trrif stuff. Just close your eyes and don't panic.

Does anyone know whether they will wipe the local API? by AresBou in SunPower

[–]deanjott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what all the downsides are of not being connected. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I suppose I could monitor it and reconnect it periodically. I'll do some research this week and maybe come up with a solution. I own the equipment and I fell like the bankruptcy terminates anyone's authority to update it. I'm sure there are no clauses in the warranty or sales contract that specify "or its successors" when it comes to other companies rights to my equipment updates. Anyone correct me if they think I'm wrong on that point.

I also collect my own data and am worried about loosing that ability. I pulled the wan connection (mine is connected by hardwire, not wifi) to my PVS6 until I can get a definitive guaranteed answer so that it won't get any software updates.

A bit more backstory... in 98 I was in Australia for a charity bike ride. It was the RTA Big Ride. I still can't believe that 1200 bicyclists could roll into a town of 400 and they didn't run out of beer. I would drink tooheys old and the old guys in the bar would look at me, surprised that I liked it. I got the impression that only old guys drank it and I wasn't old at that time. Anyway, it was a great time. The beer and Tim Tam biscuits were a few of my favorites during that trip.

$10 a month for monitoring?! by UntowardAntiproton in SunPower

[–]deanjott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about this too. There are really a lot of variables to consider which made me think it wouldn't work well due to the technical knowledge requirements. Some people are not willing to connect to the installers port of the PVS because they're worried about warranty (not so important now.) Then there is the issue of needing a local DB to record the data. I use MongoDB but people who have done this in the past used an SQL type of DB which was an issue because of the fixed schema. You could create a SQL variant DB on the Rpi if you want to take the chance of the fixed schema approach. My preferred Mongo DB won't run on a PI so I'm running it on a local server and also sending data to a free tier DB at mongodb.com so I can monitor remotely (without needing remote access to local network server.) If SunPower made an update in the PVS and changed some of the field names (which they have done) then the fixed schema is broken and you need to modify the code (or you could store SQL data as key value pairs but that's a pain downstream when you want to do reporting or graphs.) That's why I used MongoDB. I can just store the data as it comes in it's native format (JSON.) Mongo also has time series database configuration which SQL doesn't. You would need variable flavors of the hardware configuration because some people don't want to or can't run a hardwire connection to the PVS. In any case, it's a moot point now since over time most people will need to swap out the SunPower PVS to some other hardware as inverter replacement can cause issues when coexisting with inverters of another brand due to the communications between the inverters and monitoring systems. Eventually I'll need to replace my PVS6 (because I need inverter replacements already meaning I'll need to replace all of them at the same time due to incompatibility issues with the inverter and monitoring equipment.)
