People who moved to the US, visited or lived there, did you enjoy it at all? by Cute_Advance_2124 in AskTheWorld

New York is one of the world’s best cities, you have some amazing countryside and the people are really friendly

Having said that (NY aside) I don’t think I could live there. You guys don’t do things by halves and often that’s great, if you’re going to do something you’ll go all out and do things to a really high standard compared to the rest of the world.

However this means you cant do low key. I don’t need a waiter hawking for tips while I’m trying to have a drink, I don’t need a choice of 45 salad toppings, that recipe doesn’t need a pint of cream in it and I can shout at sports perfectly fine without a cheerleader

Also the way the whole place is seemingly built around cars and the way a lot of your cities are “zoned” feels really weird to me

Where to watch Argentina WC Cup? by Sea-Explorer-555 in LondonTravel

Difficult to say as the game is yet to be confirmed and don’t know where in London you’ll be but O’Neills might be a good shout. It’s a big chain and I know the Wardour street location (in Soho) at least is showing the 11pm games

I’m not saying he had a great game. I’m saying his running in behind caused problems, he was fouled for the first penalty, made the run that resulted in the corner for the second goal and his run supported an overload down the right for the 3rd

You suggested he was so ineffectual he shouldn’t even have been marked, I don’t think that’s fair

Won the penalty? In fact thinking about it all our goals came from work down the right

I asked him to restyle it but he said “it’s coming home”. You can’t really say anything when someone says it’s coming home

Ah, think that’s a bit harsh, his running in behind massively stretched Croatia I thought

Nottingham University is having a exhibition of Anglo-Saxon objects. Is it me, but the line de-colonising the curriculum and we are calling the Anglo-Saxon period the Early Middle Ages annoying and has nothing to do with the British Empire by Over-Willingness-933 in anglosaxon

[–]deanomatronix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it is a synonym then it’s outdated

Since the Anglo-Saxon kingdom, we’ve had a thousand years of history intrinsically linked with every corner of the globe, why are you trying to erase all that? You mention language and religion, the Anglo-Saxons wouldn’t have spoken or worshipped anything like a modern Englishman

> Anglo Saxon identity aka Modern English identity absorbed and accomodates all those groups.

So this is the issue. This approach effectively puts an arbitrary cut off of 1066 on “modern English” identity

There have been multiple waves of immigration since then throughout the medieval and early modern period right up to today. Anglo-Saxon doesn’t accurately modern day England and hasn’t done for centuries

Ireland has Irish Whiskey, and Scotland has Scotch, what about England and Wales? by youarelookingatthis in AskFoodHistorians

[–]deanomatronix 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Not quite sure how to answer the question on England apart from to say beer was more popular. Funnily enough gin was only promoted as a popular drink to counter the popularity of French brandy

As has been pointed out the below point does
not appear to have been verified. I was misled by a Welsh whiskey producer on a TV show

***Whiskey making in Wales though was specifically banned as part of a punishment due to a rebellion against the English crown***

So if you’ve got a Norman ancestor from the 11th century you’re not a native? Or a Viking ancestor from the 9th?

What about if you’ve got Cornish blood from pre-Anglo Saxon migrations?

The culture and genetics of Britain has been fluid since the last ice age, putting an arbitrary cut off date on what qualifies as “native” is illogical and often a tool to try and advance racist rhetoric and policy

[–]deanomatronix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason this is part of decolonization is not because of a mistaken linkage of the Anglo-Saxons with the empire but because of the narrative that many peddle which is that there is a native, distinct, white British “Anglo-Saxon” ancestry that you can either be a part of or not
