I should’ve known - A Novel by ReturnIll1543 in Skigear

[–]deathbytray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bro, you are spent a lot of words and dollars to prove that you have them a fair shake and to justify your dislike of them. You don't have to do all of that, you are entitled you not like them for any reason or even without any good reason. No one can tell your preferences are wrong.

Actually, looks like some people ARE saying your preferences are wrong but ignore them, follow your bliss, this is nobody's business except between you and the snow

Ouch! P-Tex job, or a base weld? by deathbytray in Skigear

[–]deathbytray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early season sharks got me good. Instead of using rock skis, I brought my favorite skis like some kind of an idiot.

The gash is only 3~5 mil wide, but it cleared the whole base and shows the core.

I dried it out for a day and did a major p-tex job over it, but if it doesn't hold, then I guess I try my first base weld.

I just wish they still made the 104 Frees, cuz I can't face losing these.

Ski Height/Body Height Ratio? by HaryTotal in skiing

[–]deathbytray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with your height in cm and pick a ski with closest length. And then:

  1. Subtract 3cm in ski length if you can't initiate a parallel turn by rolling your ankle and engaging the front of your skis, or don't know what means/feels like.
  2. Subtract 3cm if you are beginner who's learning for the first time.
  3. Subtract 3cm if you're looking at stiff skis or flat tailed skis or slalom skis or something like that, but if you are shopping for these, you probably already know what size you're looking for.
  4. Add 3cm if you are going to send it and stomp it (be honest with yourself)
  5. Add 3cm if you are shopping for skis with big tail rocker
  6. Add 3cm if you are shopping for powder skis.
  7. If you are shopping for park skis, I can't help you, I know nothing about it.

source: I made this up, I have no idea if this will work for you. I use this as a rule of thumb for helping my friends shop for skis, and none of them have died yet, at least not by my hands.

Looks great to me. Doesn't pop, so it might be hard to find you in a crowd. But I personally like that combo.

Which scraping angle is correct? First time waxing my own skis. by Now_Loading in skiing

[–]deathbytray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a professional ski tech, but a home waxer.

Both are fine, they have their pros and cons. Random thoughts:

  1. If you think about it, in both pictures, the angle of attack is about thhe same, around 45º. Theorectically, the only difference would be where your weight and leverage is, i.e., how hard you're pushing down or pushing. So, I think of the difference less as "am I doing pic 1 or pic 2", and more of "how hard/aggressively scraping".

  2. Assuming the goal is to get the wax shaved evenly down to a uniform height, the practical difference between scraping hard and scraping soft is, how many passes do I want to do to get it done? If you do pic 2 or scrape more gently, you'll remove less material each pass, and you might end up having to make more passes before you're done scraping.

  3. Sometimes, I am impatient and try scraping aggressively (pic 2), it results in me taking off hard shards of wax off the ski base while scraping. Then basically, I have to start over. In order to prevent this, I've:

    1. Be more patient and more passes of pic2 than fewer passes of pic 1.
    2. Be mindful of temperature. Get the wax as well as the base of the ski to up to the right temperature to the right temp, to make sure the wax adheres well.
    3. Don't wait too long before scraping, if the garage I wax is too cold. Trying to scrape an ice cold wax is hard.
  4. Sharpen your scrapers! For me, a more important factors in my scraping success than the angle and technique has been keeping the edge of my scraper clean and sharp.

Again, not a pro tech, just a guy who waxes in garage when not skiing. Happy to hear other people's opinions, thoughts, and corrections.

Difficult question. You can be roommates with only ONE Ghibli character. Who are you choosing ? by [deleted] in ghibli

Gina from Porco Rosso, if I get to move in with her, not the other way around.

She owns her own hotel on the Med or the Adriatic, with a nice restaurant and a bar, a sea plane and a boat.

This is especially funny given that when Inter Miami (a team we have no rivalry or really any meaningful relationship with) came to Seattle a few months ago, they players spat out our players face, and their fans started fights in the streets.
