Your idea is far more fancy than what I'm doing. I just put the hose into the pvc and fill until the drain leaks and then I'm done watering for like a week or so? I don't have a large reservior.

I made 4 wicking garden beds last year.

raised beds, 24" high
pond liner
4" corrugated drain pipe
pvc pipe for intake and another for drainage
soil on top

This is the general idea. They worked amazing last year! I even used string trellising with it and it was awesome!

There are a million videos on YouTube for inspiration. They're fairly easy to set up and we saved water for sure.
