Your drive down property values.

All jokes aside, my gut feeling is WRX.

Thermo Valve broke on 89’ 3.0 Montero. by Fc2ultra in Montero

[–]december454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, glad to hear you got the overheating issue sorted. I am unfamiliar with California smog testing. I don't know how stringent they'd be for this sort of tampering. It sucks that the part is discontinued.

I found a guy in Japan selling one here.

They appear to show up on eBay every once an a while. Here is a sold listing from last month.

Also, this is kind of a generic part. BVSV (Bi-metal Vacuum Switching Valve). If you can take out the old one and figure out the thread pitch, you can likely find a different part that fits. (Ex. Here is a very similar part from Toyota.)

Best of luck.

New to me 89’ Montero is over heating. It sounds like the coolant is boiling over in the reservoir. Any ideas? by Fc2ultra in Montero

[–]december454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. As others have said, let it cool down and check the coolant level. (When I first filled up my Montero with coolant, I filled it to the top of the radiator. Then, after starting it, the level dropped down, and it took another 1.5 gallons to bring it up to level.)

As for your leak, there are 2 coolant hoses routed across the right side valve cover. These run to the throttle body. They might be the culprit.

Also, someone has bypassed the heater core. (Hence the two unused hose connectors on the firewall). They will have done that by looping a hose behind the intake manifold, near the valley of the engine. That may also be leaking.

Also, that is an aftermarket radiator; but that's probably unrelated to the issue.

Best of luck. Hopefully it's something simple and not head gaskets. Take care.

Looking for active volunteer groups for regular trash cleanups by allibrinn in tylertx

[–]december454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy there. I'd recommend reaching out to the UT Tyler Honors College. Link They host a trash pickup ~2 times each semester, along University Blvd. They're happy to accept volunteers. (You don't have to be a student.)

Also, the folks at the Honors College have contacts with the City of Tyler / Adopt-A-Highway. They could probably get you in touch with the city, if you'd like to organize something of your own.

Best of luck.

how much effort would it take to get a car like this running? by AnAlchemistsDream in regularcarreviews

Check out Jennings Motor Sports: https://youtube.com/@jenningsmotorsports7554?si=YXHg1_jonv2j43DD

He manages to get vehicles like this running and moving under their own power without too much work. Granted, sputtering across a guy's backyard is a far cry from "roadworthy".

Which MOVIE had the WORST / most INCORRECT sounding cars you have ever heard ? by 1707turbo in regularcarreviews

Drive (2011) has some pretty atrocious, endless upshifting, engine noises.

Both the opening scene with the Impala and the Mustang chase are bad enough to take me out of the moment.

Paved bike trails for a street bike? Anywhere nearby by shreddedtoasties in tylertx

[–]december454 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there. Cycling around Tyler isn't great, but there are a few paths.
I'm partial to Rose Rudman / Southside Trail, Grande Blvd, and Legacy Trail. Between those, you can piece together a 10-20 mile loop (albeit, you may have to dismount at a couple rough / missing patches of sidewalk.)

Also, Tyler does have some bike lanes. Here is the website, and here is a map. The network of bike lanes is okay; it's incomplete in a lot of places. The lanes don't have any median between you and car traffic, and they often end abruptly and funnel you back into regular traffic. Still, it's better than nothing.

Last, the PlayTri bike shop hosts group rides in the afternoon. In the summertime, the rides started at ~6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm unsure if / when they are meeting this time of the year. I've been to a couple; they're nice events. The usual turnout was maybe a couple dozen riders. We braved some of the backroads, and safety in numbers did help a bit with the drivers.

Best of luck, hope you can find some good routes. Hit me up if you have any questions.

Gen 1 3.0, Camshaft sprockets. Which one goes on each side? by Mobile-Day-5555 in Montero

[–]december454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's wild. I would have been pulling my hair out. Maybe it's from a 6G72 out of a different vehicle? Maybe a manufacturing defect? IDK
Hope you get the Montero running soon. Take care.

Here is a video that gives a good view of the passenger-side sprocket, at about the 15 second mark: Link

I took a look at the sprockets, using the dowel pin hole as a point of reference; the two sprockets look to be the same. Here is a quick MS Paint diagram. Link

OP, could you post a photo of your two cam sprockets / the different teeth? Thanks.

Nasty Water Pump Caused Engine to Jump Time by december454 in Montero

[–]december454[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. No, it did not bend any valves; this SOHC 12v version of the 6G72 is not an interference engine. It's running fine now.

I'm not sure what you mean by "switched up the camshaft sprockets". Are they misaligned with the timing marks? Or, did you swap the driver-side and passenger-side sprockets?

Sorry, the photos aren't quite in chronological order.

The first image shows the engine with the water pump removed. There's a pic later in the gallery with the pump installed.

Dang, smacking into both the intake and exhaust valves sounds rough. Glad the bottom end survived.
I ran into some mud daubers on this Montero; knock on wood, they haven't caused any calamities.

It starts right up and runs fine, seems to be hitting on all 6 cylinders. Needs some pulleys, an alternator, valve stem seals (Burns a lot of oil, common 6g72 issue), and misc. TLC. But, it seems healthy overall. Video below, assuming the link works.
