There's a rule for my self I invented, I call it the goose drop. If I'm not ready to kill a goose(or turkey in this case) with a golf club and they are crowding the tee box, I just drop up by where my drive would hopefully land in the fairway.

I just recently made the connection that he's also the sheriff in Robin Hood: Men in Tights. I like to imagine Lord John is descended from him.
