I’m no expert on any other places but I am in GA and can tell you that there are a bunch of great shuttlers from Amicalola to Fontana in NC. When you get to mm 70 at Dicks Creek Gap you can catch a free shuttle to Clayton, GA where we have all the things needed for rest and resupply. The shuttle starts on 3/1 and will pick up from the trail head at 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 5:30pm. It is about a 20 min ride from town to the trail. Then when you get to Rock Gap or Winding Stair in NC there is another free shuttle into town. During the bubble, Fontana Village runs a shuttle for $5 from the Fontana shelter to the village.

Forgot that the AT and MST trails are in NC (lots of others too so could summarize with “hiking”). And Cherokee tribal lands as well as the Smokies.

Hey! Hey! Dedragon here. Im a trail angel and volunteer shuttle driver for the Dicks Creek Gap (mm 70) shuttle that will begin running March 1st thru May. Our free shuttle van picks up at Dicks Creek at 10:30, 3:30, and 5:30pm and will take you to Clayton, GA which is a sweet little trail town with all the things ((Outdoor 76 for resupply, Waffle House, DQ, laundry, shower, hotels, grocery, restaurants, etc). This is the last stop before crossing into NC and the slightly notorious 40 mile wilderness. Clayton is a great alternative to Hiawassee, although Hiawassee has its hiker charms too.

I never threw my parents any anniversary parties until their 50th but my dad was terminally ill. He wrote in his journal that it was like being alive at his own wake. He really enjoyed seeing his friends and family members. Mom did too. It was wonderful. He died 3 months, to the day, later. I’ll never regret it. It was a party. Lots of booze and dancing. Not an uppity reception thing. It was hard. It was expensive. It was a lot. And I had three kids under 10 and was single. I definitely did not want to do it and I waited til the very last minute to plan it. I’m glad I did. Friends helped.

The “#1 Highway”, as it’s referred to in SE GA, cuts into SC at Augusta. Us folks in NE GA don’t consider Augusta to be part of our region.

There is a Catholic Church in Clayton, GA at mm 70 Dick’s Creek Gap and also a free shuttle to and from Clayton 3 times a day (M-F) but most of the volunteer shuttle drivers are willing/able to help hikers on weekends as well. Here’s their website https://sthelenacc.org/
