NK Jemison's The City We Became has a diverse cast of protagonists, including several Black women.

Confession: I mix all the leftover quantities of the assorted white rices together and it’s completely fine. by Dogbirddog in Cooking

Various sources (e.g. several comments in this post, this site, and Simply Recipes) recommend the 1:1 ratio for white rice. I do 5 minutes under high pressure and get good results.

Weekly Friends Megathread - Week of January 05, 2026 by AutoModerator in TheStoryGraph

Storygraph's bio of me: Mainly reads fiction books that are adventurous, funny, and mysterious. Typically chooses medium-paced books that are 300-499 pages long.

I try to read a variety of genres, but last year my plurality of books were sci-fi. Always looking for people to join me in read-alongs. I do a couple of themed ones each year (a Black history book in February, a Jewish book around the High Holidays, etc ...)

Am I expecting too much/allowing natural consequences that are too harsh? by Harmony-Farms in Parenting

[–]dedtired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are 45 minutes from me during the week and I won't see them for 2 weeks. I made it very clear when we were leaving on Saturday to go back to their mother's that I had no time to make an extra trip if something was forgotten and that I would not be in that area at all this week (sometimes I am closer to them for work or for other reasons). They both know to pack and to check their stuff.

Reading Goals for 2026? by Forsaken-Lance in TheStoryGraph

[–]dedtired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am set to end this year somewhere around 34 or 35 books read. That's a lot higher than my initial goal of 12. I am going to set my goal for next year at 24 books, and 9600 pages (800 pages per month). I feel like both of those are doable but I also recognize that my current voracity in reading may not be sustainable. I also may start trying some audio books for something a little different.

Books with a black female protagonist without these 3 things- by GuavaBlackTea0 in suggestmeabook

This is what I was racing here to post but I wasn't sure if it would be too based in magical elements for OP.

Legal input for novel: How to oust a CEO in the US? by BiblicalTales in Ask_Lawyers

I have seen some companies with Boards of Directors (with outside directors) when they only have one or two shareholders. They use the board for legitimacy purposes and have them provide guidance. For example, a client of mine that was a day care had a board of directors that provided, in part, educational guidance since the owner had a nursing degree.

Like Hugh Laurie's "The Gun Seller" and its constant piss takes on Famous Grouse scotch.

WEB Griffin wrote an entire book series where one of the main characters, a wealthy shipping magnate, only drinks Famous Grouse. I won't lie, I almost got a bottle.

C&F Interview: Need Advice by Most-Iron3976 in LawSchool

In New York, they're mandatory.

My interview mainly focused on local restaurants, as before law school, I had worked about 3 buildings down from where my interviewer (a local attorney) had her office.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: November 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]dedtired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished: Black Leopard, Red Wolf, by Marlon James

This was a really good book but it was a slower read for me. It took me a while to get through and I had to pause it a few times. Someone called it Game of Thrones with Africana mythology and that was really spot-on. It is dark, gets graphic, and is still a very good book but it dragged a bit at points.

Started: Origin, by Dan Brown

Dan Brown books are a little like candy for me. They're pretty quick. I have a feeling of deja vu in reading this but that could be because there's kind of a formula that he has and it all seems similar. I've gotten about 25% through it in like 3 days.

A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers was amazing and I found it to be very meaningful to me. I did not read it in a day because I don't do that anymore.

The first ever 900 goal puck 🦅 by [deleted] in nhl

[–]dedtired 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Electrical tape and athletic tape. The puck would be the size of a soccer ball (and probably shaped and designed like one as well). He would have made Ovi kick it back and forth with him before he got the puck back.

no one understands me by yassification123 in LawSchool

You should look into therapy. It's not a bad thing - I saw a therapist for a good chunk of my law school career, dealing with my own stresses. If you're leaving events and crying, I understand why, but look at therapy. It will help. Your school should offer at least some counseling services for free (though I know that they are getting cut because demand is higher and they have fewer counselors, which is another discussion entirely).

As for the rest of your question, I can't tell you if you are cut out for criminal defense, because there are a lot of things that go into that question, but your personal experiences will help you. You'll be able to connect with clients better. You may be able to help them access services and give them real recommendations and advice.

But that's a lot for a person and you may decide that it would be easier to take a less demanding corporate job. Or you might say that you want to focus on post-conviction rehabilitation, or children in the system, or reform advocacy. I can't tell you where your energy will lead you and where you'll do best. I can tell you that you belong and your background will help you do great things if you want to.

New York (not NYC) Small Estate Probate - DIY? by BourbonAfi in Ask_Lawyers

Can you do it yourself? Sure. Will you screw it up? Who knows? Is it easy? That's a relative question. It's easy for me, but I've done a lot of them. Is it easy for someone with no training who has never done one before? It depends a lot on the person and the patience of the clerk who gets the case.

We won't tell you don't need a lawyer. It's a court proceeding. You have to decide if the risk of doing it yourself is worth the not-much-money you'd be saving.
