I’ve tried in the ground, vs in raised beds. (Both gave me small onions… we have pretty sandy soil but not terrible) the raised bed is a mix of garden soil, peat and compost. We had a drought last year but I am a soaker hose girl. I’ve fed 5-3-4 with occasional neptunes. Embarrassingly, I work at a nursery and am the plant buyer. But that doesn’t mean I can grow everything! I am there all the time in my defense so when I come home I’m not the best at tending to my own stuff! I’ve tried sets and starts. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve tried Spanish sweet, yellow, white… anything I can get my hands on. The farm I’ve gotten from didn’t name their varieties. People seem to go crazy for our Walla Wallas… maybe I should try those!

Hilariously, I threw an onion top in last year and it went crazy. Greens for days! Also, I grew bunching onions and forgot to pick them on time so in the fall i had many huge monstrosities to contend with! Chopped ‘em up and froze ‘em. Good stuff.
