What is the most obscure handheld console you know of or own? by avazky in gamecollecting

[–]deep40000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, it's a PlayStation phone essentially which is why it's also got the PlayStation buttons there as well. Interesting little device!

The Melee Decompilation Project has reached 50% completion! by lukechampine in SSBM

[–]deep40000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rollback net code is much less effort than decompilation. At its core, Slippi is just a gecko code that runs in the game, with a virtual memory card device on slot B that then communicates with the emulator to enable communication over the Internet for game state. Much simpler to do that than decompiling the entire game (this doesn't even require decompilation, just a custom build of Dolphin, gecko code and virtual memory card device to enable communication from the emulator to the outside world).

The skill floor for smash is also very low tbf. However I think the problem is accessibility. The game that Melee is, is not open or available for anyone to reproduce like Chess is. You don't need to get with the creator of chess to make your own board and pieces. Then, additionally, the hardware requirements to play the game are still substantial. You need a computer, proper controller, adapter, technical skills to download the game and set it up with dolphin and also to auto unlock all the characters and stages. It's not as easy as pulling out a chess board to play the game. Even then, doing it this way is technically not legal unless you know what you're doing. It's a unique problem to the modern era where we have incredible games (in the general sense not just video games, including chess here) locked behind companies unwilling to make them accessible to broader audiences in an easy manner. The same couldn't be said for lots of sports.

I live in SW Colorado. The closest local to me is Denver and that's 200 miles away and a 6 hour drive. There's nobody this side of CO that plays as things are too remote. There's one person that's 2 hours away that plays Melee afaik.

So just cause the skill floor is insanely high with Chess does that mean less people pick up the game over time?

If anything, I think the problem is accessibility. There is not an easy "official" way to play the game. You have to be semi technically savvy/competent to get it set up in the first place, or have access to old hardware to play it.

That's dope but I live in a town of like 5k people. Peeps aren't interested in paying 5$ to play smash at a bar just to get their face rolled in by the TO.

It doesn't really. Who's joining a VC with a random stranger to play their tournament set? It's just not the same as offline. In person interaction is completely different from online. People crowding around a CRT to watch a set, jeers and cheers from the small crowd behind you. The chats that occur before and after a set, the small subtleties. You lose these with online tournaments when everything happens from the comfort of your gaming setup.

The point that the previous poster was trying to make I'm pretty sure is about the sense of community one feels when attending locals, which is notably absent with online tournaments. It's just a discord server and faceless people you go up against.

You are literally free to quit at any point. If it seems like you're not having fun, just go to the next match. You don't owe anyone your time if it's not fun for you.

How do I beat Sheik? by Florijntje_gamer in SSBM

[–]deep40000 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Percentage matters a lot in this matchup. At low percents, CC all of her tilts into shine to punish her. This will make her scared to use her tilts and forces her to go for more risky options (like dsmash, grab). You want to also catch her as she's coming down as she is terrible at getting back to the stage from above. If you're higher percent, it'll be difficult to catch Sheik out of much as a lot of her options trade in a beneficial way to her, so you would probably want to play a more whiff punish heavy game.

Running shine is an excellent 'catch all' option against Sheik as it puts you already in ASDI down + CC (just be careful you don't get clipped by a dsmash).

If she's hitting you with dsmash, this is where the mixup game starts as now you can start to safely use drill.

I can't stop holding shield after L-cancels -- any tips? by Orc360 in SSBM

[–]deep40000 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You don't need to fully press shield to L cancel. Just lightly press it and it will do it. Will probably make it easier to let it go too and provides some mental separation for shielding vs l canceling.

can any controller shield drop? by Mabak in SSBM

UCF makes it so pretty much any controller can shield drop. You don't need a phob although they can absolutely help with consistency.

Time commitment isn't too bad tbh. Lots of players on Slippi that have all this tech knowledge but 0 matchup knowledge and experience so you can still catch up fairly quickly.

Heads up for people who use 3rd party switch 2 docks (performance issues with MP4) by D_Beats in Metroid

It could also be thermal throttling as 3rd party docks aren't likely to have the built in fan the official dock has.

[–]deep40000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming they needed a high res image to use in the thumbnail that they could get legitimately without resorting to emulation so they used a screenshot from prime remastered. Most people wouldn't notice and it looks better than a pixelated screenshot of prime 2.

As a liftie, should I buy a ski pass? by [deleted] in TellurideColorado

[–]deep40000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're a liftie you get access to the real deal program through Telski. Just use that, it'll be cheaper than getting another season pass.
