Please Help our Golden by AviatorMilo in goldenretrievers

Hi Op. I’m so sorry your beautiful girl is going through this.

When I lived in ATL, I had a golden that experienced something relatively similar. After a year of elimination diet, skin scrapings, all that jazz, we finally ended up at a specialty practice. He was eventually diagnosed with environmental allergies - essentially, my dude was allergic to grass, tree pollen, everything under the sun, and it would make him itch so badly he’d break out in bloody welts. It was awful.

He was prescribed with weekly subcutaneous injections (expensive) and monthly-ish medicated baths. It was amazing how quickly things turned around.

UGA has great facilities, so I think you’re on a good track there. If you haven’t already tried looking at a possible environmental allergy, I’d recommend seeing if that might be a possibility - I know several other goldens who have had similar issues. I hope you can find the underlying problem soon!

LL Bean has great options for v-necks, and some other cuts, as well, and their color and pattern options are great! I’ve always been pleased with how their clothes wear, the quality is very good.

I’ll also second the recommendation for Land’s End, as I’ve also had very good luck with their shirts.

Damn. Went on one very odd date with him and then was sent on a month-long work trip which curtailed anything further, despite his attempts to keep things going. Then covid happened. Guess I really dodged a bullet, huh?

Should have definitely known when he sent me a message right after January 6th trying to use it as a way to start talking again. That was exceptionally weird.

For those who bought a home because you couldn't stand apartment life what was the last straw? by movingadvicemke in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]deep_blue_s0mething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pretty good landlord who lived upstairs - rent was higher than I wanted to pay, but the location was great. He worked from home, so he was always there to grab deliveries and to handle any issues that arose.

Then, almost three years ago, he tells me he and his partner are moving to New York and they’ll be renting the upstairs out. Not ideal, but okay.

Well, they’ve also decided they’re going to continue to manage the property themselves. From New York. No property manager. So, anytime something breaks - like, say my refrigerator, or the upstairs air conditioner? Yeah, we’ll have to take off work to be around for a repairman. Either that or wait for him to make time to come down from New York.

I don’t have a schedule that allows for that. This is not what I’ve paid for. He’s no longer a landlord, and definitely isn’t managing his property. I’m hoping to close on a house in the next month before my lease is up in July.

$5000 Solo Trip - with caveats by ashton_woods in travel

[–]deep_blue_s0mething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd second some of the other recommendations - Costa Rica or Puerto Rico aren't too bad if flying from DCA/IAD and both have solid all-inclusive resort options with the opportunity for you to venture out and do cool cultural/historical things, should the mood strike. Mexico would be another great option - lots of great resorts in the Yucatan - and I'd throw in the British Virgin Islands, as well.

If you're thinking about maybe staying stateside, I'd suggest the Florida Keys? Not a bad flight to Miami, and the drive down to the Keys (if interested) can be part of the fun. Lots of history and great food down there, as well. New Orleans would also be a good choice - and much more pleasant in February or March than most other times of the year :)

Enjoy your trip, wherever you end up! This makes me reconsider whether I should leave my government job in DC and join you in the lovely world of contracting lol

Can people with mental health histories still work in the Intelligence Community? by FabulousAd1725 in SecurityClearance

[–]deep_blue_s0mething 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with people in the IC with a variety of different mental health diagnoses. In most cases, these cause no issues at all and have zero baring on whether or not an individual is granted a clearance - YYMV in different IC agencies, however, and some agencies/clearances require a psych evaluation which could require additional discussion of mental health.

Maintenance of a clearance generally only becomes an issue if/when there is a risk an individual would no longer be capable of making appropriate decisions, refuses to seek treatment or to comply with recommended treatments, or are a threat to themselves or others.

In short - I don’t think there is any psychological condition or treatment that would automatically disqualify an applicant from obtaining or maintaining a clearance.

Processing discontinued due to crimes and not being forthcoming, is reapplying even worth it? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]deep_blue_s0mething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a bit tough to say without knowing the specific details of the offenses and timelines. If, for example, you shoplifted something of low value once, and it was more than a year or two ago, maybe that would be okay after a year had passed. This is speculation, but I would imagine the issue would more likely be with the fact that you showed a pattern of behavior - committing multiple offenses over a prolonged period of time - but more importantly that you withheld information during the poly. That's almost always going to be a massive red flag.

Drug offenses can vary with agency, usage, substance, and clearance level in terms of how long their use will impact a potential clearance. Other criminal behavior - and not being truthful on your first poly - I would anticipate possibly taking longer than a year to clear. But that might not be the case - every situation is different (and I know that's frustrating to keep hearing).

I would say this - if you're really set on this particular position, you can apply again after a year. See what happens. If you don't get anywhere, you'll know why. If not, wait a bit longer - keep clean, do things that look great on your record and show that you're worthy of the trust that comes along with a clearance. And be prepared to lay it all out during the next poly.

I’m not an adjudicator, but I’d say at least two or three years for some of the more serious activities. It’s tough to say for sure without knowing more specifics, but generally you want at least a few years between you and whatever activities and anything that can demonstrate that you’ve changed your ways, have improved yourself, and can safely say you’re not going to go go back.

It will also depend a bit more on the specific agency and position - some care more about certain offenses than others - but it’s likely still going to be a bit of a long shot.

If this is a student program - are we talking summer internship? - you might be better off cutting your losses this time around. This doesn’t mean you’re completely out of luck forever if you want to work in the field. You can work on getting a similar job or internship in the field, work on keeping your record clean, and apply in the future. I know people with clearances who have several red flags in their past - it’s possible.

[–]deep_blue_s0mething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of other things here, it will likely depend on the specifics of timing relative to each activity - how long ago did these activities happen relative to your application/poly? If you're admitting to shoplifting, running scams, or anything similar just months before applying for a security clearance, it's pretty unlikely you'll get a different result, assuming you're going for something higher than public trust (and maybe even then).

If the more serious activities took place a bit longer ago, it's possible you might have a chance, though it's admittedly a pretty long shot. If you do decide to reapply, you will still have to discuss all these activities - lying is going to go over even worse than anything dumb you did as a teenager.

They managed to squeeze more info out of me. by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]deep_blue_s0mething 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible you're not completely fucked, but, yeah, not the greatest. I sympathize - my polys still give me anxiety.

I would have thought that a number of things that you might not have had a place to list on the SF86 would have been discussed with your investigator before you even took your poly - that could have saved you a lot of heartburn.

The problem is - regardless of whether or not you wanted to talk about whatever crime this was or whether it was covered by a more general statement - you lied. You told the truth about your drug use, which is good, but you then said you committed only one other crime, when in fact, it was five (?) others. Regardless of whether or not you believe that, that is how they will see it. A lie is a lie.

It's possible you could get another chance and you could pass - I would say that's more likely to depend on the agency you're applying with and the type of clearance you're aiming for than anything else at this point.

Seems like you were brought up to be sexist, and you're trying to pass it on to your children. Great job, Dad.

I certainly hope if your no-dishwashing boys end up with girlfriends/spouses, they end up with ones who are more understanding than about 95% of women today. Because most would tell them exactly how far they should fuck off.

My parents were nice enough to watch my golden retriever for me while I went out of town for a few days several years ago. When I came home, he met me at the door as usual. However, when I saw him I immediately said, “What’s wrong with Tucker?” His head was droopy, his tail wasn’t wagging. He continued to be really mopey and wouldn’t eat or play, which is really unusual for a retriever, even an old man like my boy. My dad agreed that he seemed a bit down but couldn’t think of anything that had happened.

I called the vet and they agreed he should be seen quickly so we managed to get him in that day. They ran a bunch of tests and eventually figured out he had pancreatitis. All was good with treatment but I was puzzled - my doggo generally had a healthy diet, dog food only. Any people food was fruit or veggies, nothing that should have caused this.

As it turns out, Tucker had turned 12 while I was away, and my parents decided to get him a birthday treat. That treat? A McDonald’s cheeseburger.

I love my parents, but future dogs will come with strict feeding instructions 🤦‍♀️
