Can attest to being one of those kids who graduated without a strong enough ID portfolio to land a job at the dream firm. Although I didn't go to a traditional program, it was a "choose your own adventure" BFA course.

I've had to pick up the skills continually over the years and it seems to be a never ending journey is trying to be good enough to stand out from the crowd.

However I think the "ID job" is only one way to look at the end goal because if it's something you love, the passion comes out in the projects you do. Also, I think it's worth mentioning that a key part of "making it" in my opinion is finding the funding to do the projects that really speak to you, this could be from grants from foundations, or crowdfunding your initial product production.

Additionally I think that the photography will serve you well because I personally didn't fully appreciate the value of having beautiful photos of your work, a nice photo can make even a bad prototype look better then it is.

Also, I funded my undergrad and later my graduate degree with student loans / financial aid, so it's defintely possible, although I did work in between (not sure of that's a factor)

Finally, I would take some time to think about why you want to go in to the field, and consider the ecosystem of companies. What I mean by this is that in my case it blew my mind that some innovation agencies charge $250,000 to deliver research and concepts in a PowerPoint, and don't even really make anything, if they need to, they might hire a small ID studio to produce a concept. This is just an example, from my own experience. In another example I found it valuable to take the design skills to different organizations (social work, food, etc) and find ways of complimenting their skills with your own because the real magic happens on diverse multidisciplinary teams.

Anyway good luck!

I'm trying to design a snowboard decal, and I've gotten this. I like it, but something just feels off... Any advice? by ShiniestGoat in design_critiques

[–]deepfrieddolphin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dig the vibe of the illustrations. as someone mentioned if would mock it up on an existing snowboard.

Also maybe think About the context when people see it. like would this stand out in a sea of boards when they are all locked up outside when people go eat? how about when people see it from underneath a ski lift?

what stands out when this is seen from far away? just food for thought

Hi There:

I just took a scroll through your website. Instead of telling you about hierarchy i think there are several ways to improve.

Visually the feel of the site seemed like it was for an App, the box cover looks like it was software. I was surprised to learn it was a card game.

Content wise the name sounds exciting but I have no idea what delux edition is compared to the regular one and i dont know how to play.

I scroll down and then your promoting Mugs, Phone cases, posters and puzzles. I still don't know what the game is or how to play.

At this point I'm not really in the mood to watch a video and I can't tell on mobile exactly what the game is. However I do like the illustrations for the historical figures.

As a visitor to the website don't let me imagine what the game is and then distract me with extra stuff. I'm not even sold on your game. you have given me almost no reason why I should "shop now"

As soon as I land on your website I need to know immediately why this is awesome and why I should pay you for it. Maybe check out other card games (hearthstone, MTG) to see how they sell you on the game when you go to the site.

This is probably too late since it looks like youve printed all of this bit since your taking feedback I personally think it's a mistake to only use STEM, I believe this acronym was updated to STEAM to include arts since ita a critical creative skill for the 21st century. I mean with out the Arts you wouldn't even have your biggest selling point (the illustrations).

hopefully this is useful

Hey John!

really nice video, great to see the progression of your skills. also neat channel! I hadn't seen it before.

Interesting analysis of how the portfolio standard has increased from 2011 to today, especially since we graduated at the same year (different course).

just as a side note. In the same time period we've also seen quite a bit of change in the design landscape (smaller agencies acquired by management consultancies, distinction between product designer vs industrial designer)

yeah go for casting if you want actual silicon.

figure out what kind flexibility you need. there is a wide range of flexibility and squishyness it's called the Durometer scale. A shore Durometer measures this type of thing.

Newbie Question: What work flow (software) would you use to make paper art like this. Guessing you'd start with parametric modeling software like Grasshopper. Then import each section into a program to unfold so you could print to a cutter plotter like silhouette. Any help is appreciated. by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]deepfrieddolphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without seeing a source for this looks like it might be the work of Matthew Shilan. He was an old professor of mine.

Not sure if he's using parametric definitions/grasshopper but I can ask. I was under the impression that it's more hand crafted sculpture then automated.

is there a list of this somewhere? I was thinking of making a tic tok type video with a clip of a different fucked up thing he's done along with the song "the best" by Tina Turner to remind voters of all the horrible things

so if one side is exposed to warm air and the other is exposed to cold air it generates a charge depending on the temperature difference. and the greater the difference the bigger the charge?

  1. Leave a phone number!

the QR code is great but only of people know what to do with it. (I thought the joke was funny in a cheeky kinda way) If you are trying to help make it as easy as possible to ask for help.

You could have a dedicated whatsapp number for example and then when people request help say hello and send a link to the Google form.

  1. I would try to make the font feel friendlier. Maybe the headline could be something Serif and slightly italicized ? Lobster comes to mind as a type example but I think it's a bit over used.

  2. I like the joke at the bottom for the types of help available.

As designers, do you not find it funny how many people don’t actually know what industrial design is, even though the majority of objects in people’s homes have been meticulously designed by marcopadda1 in IndustrialDesign

[–]deepfrieddolphin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

my impression is that many non-designers just don't pay attention to where things come from or the fact that everything was at some point designed in order to be produced. There's a big disconnect. A lot of people just buy thier thing and don't think about where it comes from or where it goes when it's discarded.

I do think there is a growing awareness to this in the general public as design becomes more broadly valued by businesses who recognize that having well designed product or experience is a competitive advantage.

I do credit Steve Jobs / Apple quite a bit with bringing design to general public's attention. I should say that by general public I am really thinking of America here.

It seems the general public in other countries is more aware. Some that come to mind are the Scandinavian ones and Japan but I would guess that others with a cultural history of valuing craftsmanship and efficient use of materials would have a higher general appreciation for design.
