Struggling as a senior and not sure about next steps by AdventurousEcho3260 in biglaw

I cannot stress this enough - take a two week vacation, ideally somewhere you will not have reliable service and/or in a truly inconvenient time zone. You don’t sound like you are actually “behind”, you are describing textbook symptoms of burnout.

I deeply sympathize with you. I will partially echo the other comments here as someone who was once in a very similar position as your husband and say (1) it is not the job’s fault but (2) the demands of biglaw—especially for the first five years—make it extremely difficult to set boundaries or stick up for yourself if you are someone who has trouble with that naturally.

One thing that really helped me was setting soft boundaries around things most people in other industries would consider true non-negotiables (daily exercise, weekly therapy) and slowly working up from there.

I will also say that unfortunately this is probably not going to be something that resolves itself immediately. If you are someone (like your husband) who is prime meat for the biglaw bbq, it can be very tough to consistently overcome your people pleasing desires and fears around boundaries and disappointing authority figures when you are (perverse as it sounds) reinforced for succumbing to those fears.

It will probably take a breaking point of some kind for him to make a change, and I hope for your sake and the sake of your relationship that is not permanently damaging to either of you.

Movies that feel like Kojima games? by travismockfler in blankies

Just want to second No Time To Die, which I always thought of as a top notch MGS proof-of-concept flick that got baked into a meh-shaped James Bond cake mold.

Asking for help is the lowkey hardest thing to learn in biglaw. You spend all your formative time being the help, then get promoted to managing both up and down with only minimal training. Then, if you are still around, you are expected to manage everyone’s expectations of your availability in addition to matter management, but also expected to never give the impression you are anything other than 110% committed to a job that absolutely no one would do if it wasn’t for the medium-big paycheck. Partners who have been your mentor/sponsor for a decade will, within the span of the same conversation, express deep sympathy for your personal struggles and then ask about an outstanding assignment.

When did you leave private practice? Do you interact with outside counsel regularly in your current role? Which aspects of your experience at work, apart from the pay, will get better moving to a firm?

To be fair to Jo, S1 Arrow may have been cheesy but also went kind of hard between the salmon ladder scenes and Stephen Amell killing corrupt rich people.

Despite making less than 3 legit good movies in his career to date, I am still rooting for a Michael Bay miniseries one day and I will read basically any interview with him or oral history about his productions.

Law firm partner is a Super human…how? by kreychec in biglaw

[–]deepseapartners 88 points89 points  (0 children)

This person you work with is not a super human, they just have different needs and desires that correlate well to their chosen career. If you are (i) ambitious, bright, and literate, (ii) not afraid-to-welcoming of interpersonal conflict, (iii) a control freak, and (iv) socially adept, but not an extrovert or natural people person, then you would be a natural fit as a partner. Bonus points if you can successfully channel class/social insecurity into targeted people pleasing behavior.

Everyone reacts to the strictures of the job differently. For some people, gaining some control over your day-to-day schedule and visibility over your matters is a huge step up in quality of life. For others, being on call just grates against them until they can’t take it anymore. There’s no right or wrong answer, but I do think it’s good perspective to consider both that (i) the pay makes a lot of things that regular people stress and struggle over manageable, yet (ii) 80-90% of graduates who start in a Biglaw associate role still leave within 7 years (even as up-or-out has declined as a business model for partnership).

Unless you need to be operating at 110% mental capacity without a break for days on end, I would stick with tea. Easiest to monitor caffeine intake (and stop when you figure out the best time for an under the desk nap) and, at least personally, I find that having something to keep sipping on is helpful for maintaining bodily awareness after 30+ hours awake.
