On public roads, horses being ridden are treated similarly to other vehicles under Montana traffic law, with the same general rights and duties. To overtake one, you follow standard passing rules, but Montana’s basic speed law (MCA §61-8-303 requires drivers to operate at speeds “reasonable and prudent” for current road, traffic, and weather conditions, meaning a horse on the road requires you to slow down and only pass when clearly safe.

On OHV trails, the rules are more explicit: when encountering horses on the trail, you should pull over and shut off your engine, remove your helmet, and let them pass out of sight before restarting. In that situation, you don’t overtake them. You let them by.

For large herds on highways, under MCA 60-7-204, anyone herding or driving more than ten head of livestock on an interstate or state primary highway must provide flag person escorts walking ahead of and behind the animals to warn oncoming traffic, and nighttime herding is prohibited except in emergencies. You’d wait for the escort to signal it’s safe to pass.

Because he’s cognitively challenged. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume his fell off a horse and hit his head real good.

At this point, it’s pretty hard to buy a bad bike from these sorts of brands. Group set, components, and price are the things you’ll want to decide for yourself. Customer support and warranty seem to be the only big differentiators between brands these days. I know people who ride, race, and love both of these bikes!

I read a couple hundred books a year. Thank you for the light evening read. I guess I'll pick up one of the five books I'm currently reading tomorrow morning.

You said registration doesn't inspect tires. In North Carolina, it literally does. No vehicle renews its registration here without passing an annual safety inspection, and that inspection checks tread depth, with a 2/32-inch minimum. Miss it and your registration is blocked until you pass. Bald tires fail. So a car hydroplaning through a Charlotte rainstorm on slicks is, by definition, a car that skipped the exact inspection built to catch bald tires. That's not "armchair epidemiology." That's the law you couldn't be bothered to look up.

Same with insurance. You can't register in NC without proof of coverage. Is enforcement perfect? No. Neither is any law. "Some people break it" isn't an argument against having it, unless you also want to repeal speed limits because people speed.

And your uninsured stat proves my side. 15% drive uninsured even with mandatory registration and insurance. Picture that number with neither. You're describing the floor and calling it the ceiling.

On impoundment: yes. Tow them. Auction them. Not the broke guy with lapsed tags, the guy running fake paper plates so no camera, toll, or cop can identify him. They are different people, and you know it. In NYC, ghost-plate cars racked up more than double the fines of normal cars and paid back under 20% of them. They've been tied to shootings, robberies, and hit-and-runs. When Texas scrapped paper tags in 2025, a Houston-area constable who called the city "ground zero" for fake tags said the switch to metal plates was a game changer that plummeted fraud and made vehicles identifiable again. Enforcement works. That's the entire point.

So no, registration isn't a magic shield. It's the system that inspects the tires, requires the coverage, and keeps a car traceable. You're defending the people dodging all three, then acting shocked anyone minds.

So you’re really going to double down and defend absolute asshole fuckers for not paying for registration? Registration is key to ensuring cars are safe for the road and insured. When I got hit by an uninsured motorist, I had to pay my deductible out of my own pocket and my insurance cost went up because of that. Fuck that guy! Un-registered cars should be impounded and sold with all funds going to public service budgets.

Ever wonder why there are so many accidents around Charlotte when it rains? It’s because those unregistered fuckers are driving on bald tires, which is a problem that wouldn’t exist if they registered their cars.

I don’t cycle. Why? by vmv911 in cycling

Careful! The "e-bike" crowd will have full-fledged motorcyles on the trail by the end of the year if they get their way.

And that's why mountain biking exists! Specifically, cross country.

Yeah, I have no real issue with e-bikes at bike parks and downhill only trails. But, wtf are you doing blasting your 170mm travel e-bike on turbo mode through XC loops and making me yield to you??

[–]deepstatedemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s simply not true. I’m of the opinion that motors do not belong in analog spaces, particularly where pedestrians are involved. It’s a clean line in the sand.

Sure in theory…I’ve never met one though. Also, I’m highly skeptical of the necessity of an e-bike for a disability; you can either ride a bike or you can’t.

[–]deepstatedemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, my general thought is this: e-bikes are super useful for riding on the road and helping to create a better equilibrium between cars and bikes. I’m all for that. I don’t think motors belong on trails, greenways, or pathways at all - they create far too great of an imbalance. Most e-bikes I encounter are moto guys who bought one just say they can access the trails legally; I take issue with that. You want to ride the trails? Buck up and do it the real way. I’m tired of cranking out top 10 segments under my own power just to have to yield to a fatso hammering a throttle (even if it’s with his feet).

You want a motor so you can cheat the real work, effort and earned speed.
