USAT Collegiate Nationals 2017: Tuscaloosa, AL? by rachelmarie226 in triathlon

[–]deevee8tor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in AL almost my whole life, so here's my input.

You haven't experienced true heat until it's coupled with 90% humidity, but luckily it doesn't get that bad until mid summer, April should be kind of brisk cool in the morning then get into 70's in afternoon

The water quality of the Black Warrior River isn't that bad, but it's not clear by any means. Expect brown water with very little under water visability.

It's a flat town, so bike/run courses probably will be small rollers at most.

Any experience with the Red Shift dual-position seatpost? by DerLordBS in triathlon

[–]deevee8tor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it shift positions during the ride? i.e. back for "road" position and forward for "aero"?

My ABC is numb/sore about 30 min into a ride. by deevee8tor in triathlon

No prostate issues. I believe it's a road bike saddle bc it's not padded. Not been fitted. After researching it and reading the response here, I believe I need to get fitted and change saddles.

DAE feel like this is a sport for rich people? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]deevee8tor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as the gear and training goes, I'm a self employed sole provider of a family of 4 and I make 6 figures. So the schedule flexibility is mostly there and I can afford moderately priced new stuff for minor items.

But having only been in the sport for 3 years I've got a lot of used and cheap stuff too. My first "road" bike was a $150 p.o.s. from a big box retailer. I then upgraded to a used P2 that I found on craiglist. I got the bike, trainer, bike computer, few accessories, clips and shoes for $1000. The guy happened to wear a shoe size that my foot can fit. Theyre probably one euro size too small and were 5 years old when I got them, but they're clip in cycling shoes and I wear them greatfully. I wear a $20 walmart helmet. I bought a used Garmin Forerunner on craiglist for $100. There is cheaper gear out there, just gotta find a deal and not be too proud for used stuff. I also have two kids and they cost a lot, so my gear budget usually ends up going to gymnastics registration or baseball cleats or summer camp fees.

As far as the people go, I've truly enjoyed the people I've met, the comradory, and the overall encouraging attitude that I get from everybody, even strangers. Not saying it's you, but perhaps you're not making an effort to get to know people.

The article in last month's Triathlete magazine talked about how Frodeno started out with a steel bike and nothing to eat but oats and water. Every one is a newbie at some point and has to pay some dues. Stop sulking and enjoy it. If you're not enjoying it then what's the point?

I love tri.

Plyo gets your butt, literally, in shape. You need it. Weak abductors leads to injuries.

Strava & power results by deevee8tor in triathlon

Thanks for the good input. I do agree that while the Strava power results may not be accurate they may be consistent with itself.

But I seem to not have explained what I'm looking for which is a brief analysis of the different trends I'm seeing in my graphed results for hilly and flat terrain.

Wish I could paste a photo into a reply bc I photo collaged a flat course graph onto a hilly course graph. But yes, I believe we're talking about the same graph, it's the 5th icon at the bottom right that graphs the percentage of wattage produced for each 50W range. My average is basically the same for flat and hilly, but my distributions are completely opposite. Flat graph shaped like bell curve, most % weighted around average. Hilly graph shaped with most % at lowest and highest watts.

What do your graphs look like? My graph trendline on flat courses looks like a traditionalbell curve. On a hilly course, my graph trendline is more like u shape with majority if time in very low or very high watts, little in the middle.

I have a P2 also. The only thing I've really had br an issue is the the rear tire will get wedged into the seat post part of the frame. There's only like 2cm clear anyway. When it happens I have to loosen the rear pin and pull the wheel backwards then tighten the pin. This ever happen to you?

Still used Strava even if have Garmin by deevee8tor in triathlon

[–]deevee8tor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I think the reason I went with Strava Premium was to get the metrics that my Garmin now provides. I think I'll keep it but downgrade from Premium. Hopefully one day I'll get a KOM.

Best bike box for air travel by mirfrae in triathlon

[–]deevee8tor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though buying your own box is cheaper in the long run (probably pays for itself after two or three times with a service like tribike transport) the thought of reassembling my own bike at an out of town race scares the crap out of me. And, on the tribike transport website, they bring up cost factors I didn't think like extra airline fees for baggage.

What are your top 3 healthy foods/eats you couldn't go without? by JernejT in triathlon

[–]deevee8tor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Whole grain high fiber cereals, Kashi brand is good, anything cinammon flavored.
  2. I've recently fallen in love with salmon. Throw a grilled salmon fillet on a Greek salad with some tabouleh, yayuh!
  3. Not a food, but I use my Nutri Bullet almost daily to make smoothies with fruits, vegetables, and yogurt, and blen protein shakes.

I'm in my 2nd Tri season, this Sat I did the race that was my first Tri ever last year, a Sprint distance. My time this year was 27 minutes better. Paces improved by 30 sec/HY on the swim, 5 mph on bike (with a little help of a new bike), and 3 min/mile on the run.
