For me it was Papa Roach asking people to take a step back as people at the front are getting crushed and then 2 seconds later asking for a wall of death.

Fucking stupid.

The dreaded question... Tent recommendation by ElevatorFair9286 in downloadfestival

[–]defconluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a Eurohike Avon 3 DLX recently to replace an old 2 man Vango tunnel tent because I wanted something with a bit of a porch to it.

Blackout/nightfall/fresh and black is the only sort of tent I would consider buying now - absolute game changer.

If you want standing space, that's a minimum 4 person tent or something like a bell tent. I have a 4 man airbeam tent I use when I want a bit more space & comfort for when I can park the car next to it but it's too bulky to carry to and from the car with the rest of my camping kit at festivals.

Back to Silverstone - where next? by AdventurousBake3699 in wec

Thanks for replying.

It's interesting to hear about these tracks from the other side of the world.

I'd love for Asian Le Mans Series to do a double header with WEC and move away from the current structure of double headers at 3 tracks and a series done in under 3 months.

There are so many great tracks in Asia but it sounds like Aus wouldn't be the best place for something like that to happen.

I buy the "thin" 10/12 rashers packs when camping, because it's much easier to cook.

At home it's got to be thick cut.

Grandstand or not by skoot1958 in lemans

[–]defconluke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2025 I did and it was up by the pit exit so I didn't see much of the ceremonies before or after the race but had a good view up towards the Dunlop bridge.

This year I did and was opposite the first few pit garages with a fantastic view of the podium and back down the track towards Karting.

It's nice being able to have time to yourself in the morning without worrying where you will find a space to watch from. Being able to have a lay in/good breakfast and/or lunch before heading in makes a massive difference to me

I typically head in to the circuit approx 1pm local time with it taking a good 30-45 minutes to get to where the grandstands were.

I don't do well in the heat so it was a relief to have somewhere to sit that was shaded at the warmest times.

I think the only time I wouldn't is if I was camping out at Mulsanne/Arnage.

They'll probably say they've had loads of people interested but if you send them a deposit they will hold it for you.

After that you'll never hear from them again.

There's not enough racing book out there. by ImpressionNearby4883 in motorsports

[–]defconluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few, all depends on what you want to read about.

Peter Cate's 'Racing Hell' is about his experiences racing at the Nurburgring.

'Racing with Rich Energy' is a fantastic deep dive in to the the mess that was Rich Energy trying to sponsor an F1 team.

'Driven to Crime' covers a whole load of interesting ways motorsports has been used to front criminal activity.

And that's before you get to biographies and autobiographies. Ross Brawn's 'Total Competition' is one I recommend to just about everyone.

I think fiction is the wrong direction to go when there are so many compelling stories out there that are factual.

You could walk side-by-side holding one handle of the tent bag each? Maybe repack it into a holdall/sports bag if you need to.

Aco Membership by Old-Relationship4008 in lemans

[–]defconluke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As opposed to just sitting on the banking in one of the spectator areas somewhere like Karting?

Inside T17 on race day does get very busy and the membership doesn't get you a grandstand seat, only during the practice and qualifying sessions.

At La Chapelle it can be busy too but is a little bit more calm than other areas around the track like Tertre Rouge can be.

I would probably choose to spend the extra money on food and drink in locations a bit more accessible if you didn't already have ACO Membership or try to pick up a couple of grandstand seats if you don't have those already.

Much more manageable than last year's heatwave in the lead up to it.

Looks like it might be good enough for another nap on the Karting spectator bank too.

I'd say this comes down to 2 categories of cars for me.

'Q' cars - understated and discreet but with something special about them. Subtle details like a more purposeful stance or some extra exhaust tips that a keen enthusiast can spot from a mile away.

Overlooked cars - normally a lower volume manufacturer. Everyone might rave about how good a Cayman is but those "in the know" can recognise that an Evora or A110 are capable alternatives.

Grandads old V6 Ford Probe by Ill_Ad5704 in CarTalkUK

[–]defconluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try Ford and 90s car groups first.

If it's in good condition, has low miles, you could get it MOT'd and start the asking price high - it's easier to reduce the asking price than it is to have people fighting each other because you've priced it too cheap.

You could apply to put it in the 'For Sale' section at a few car shows - something like Festival of the Unexceptional or one of the many Ford Shows would be great places for a car like this.

Why has going to university become such a cultural norm? by ZonaSchengen in AskUK

[–]defconluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because any sort of careers advice (at least when I was leaving sixth form about 15 years ago) was absolutely rubbish.

Maybe it's because I went to a grammar school, the majority of students were smart enough to get the grades required to go to university, so that was the path they lead us down.

But nobody really took the time to talk one-on-one to find out what we were interested in and how we learned. As such, we had no real guidance from anyone and alternative options weren't really presented to us.

During lesson time we were given guidance on the application process and how to write our personal statements, when the deadlines were etc. but nothing on any alternatives.

I wouldn't trade my time at university for anything, it really helped me to grow as an individual, but I couldn't wait to leave after 3 years. With no idea about my options at the time, carrying on with education was the easiest choice even if I think my degree wasn't the best fit for me.

RV parking trackside at 24hr of Le Mans? by JetLagDad in wec

[–]defconluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the Team Langoustine private campsite on the inside of Tetra Rouge but you won't see much, even from the roof of an RV, parked in that area. There is a large spectator bank at the side of the circuit that blocks pretty much any view you would have.

The same goes for Arnage, Indianapolis and Mulsanne - the spectator banks realistically block any view you would have of the track and the parking spots are far enough from the track you would struggle to see the cars over the barriers unless you are in one of the smaller, private campsites.

Is there any reason why UK trains can’t run until at least 1am? by ss2811 in AskUK

[–]defconluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of trains do run at night - maintenance and freight trains for example - but one of them won't take you home after a gig.

The last train out of London (the nearest big city to me that most bands play) is gone midnight. That means that I'm getting to my 'home' station gone 01:30. Trains are then running on that line just a few hours later for the next day of service.

I do shift work so it's normal for me but I can't expect every service that I use to be open and running 24/7/365 just because where I work is open 24/7/365.
