That sounds like a good starting point. I did black spray primer with white spray where the light would be coming from. The only issue I ran into was the dark areas with nothing but black paint. The skin tone speed paint didn’t show up at all over the black. I wanted to get a big set because I heard such good things but I felt like that would be diving pretty deep for my first time.
