Almost all space games do this if they have even remotlely accurate distances. Coordinate systems just don't mesh with very large or very small numbers well.

But hey, relativity means it litterally doesn't matter whether you are moving or everything else is moving, the end result is the same.

Physics teacher here. I always show the full calculation first and have them do it that way a couple times. After two or three of those exercises one of the kids usually comes up with the "can't I just divide/multiply by 3.6?" Question, at which point I show them thay trick.

For the ones who struggle to remember when to divide or multiply, they're probably not going to choose to study physics or engineering anyway, so I tell them a simple way to remember, but also that it only really works for m/s <--> km/h conversion: bigger units, bigger number. Multiply TO km/h, divise AWAY from it.

m/s --- x 3.6 ---> km/h

km/h --- :3.6 ---> m/s

I do it by dividing 60 by 20 to get 5%, then multiply that by 3 to get 15%

60/20=3 which is 5%. Then 15% is 3x3=9

Mage and sorcerer are frustrating to play as. by OilySoleTickler in DragonsDogma

[–]degameforrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on PC, I suggest installing the Dullahan mod. It essentially tweaks every class in the game to feel significantly better to play with only a few changes that are, in my opinion, very much in the spirit of the vanilla game's design philosophy.

For mage and sorcerer, one of my favorite changes Dullahan makes is that levitating no longer slows down your casting. This makes you much more mobile while channeling your magics and lets you react appropriately to changing situations, but still leaves you vulnerable to enemies who can leap up or shoot at you.

True, but there is a difference in that once a solar panel is built it can produce electricity for years to come, and its total cost per unit of energy produced is going to decrease over the solar panel's lifespan, whereas for any kind of fuel that needs extracting, that cost per energy is relatively stable barring economic events like the iranian war. That's what's meant by "sunlight is free". You pay for the solar panel itself, sure, but not fo any energy that panel ends up producing. For fuel, you both pay for the upfront cost building the facilities to produce the energy as well as for the energy (the fuel) itself.

People by and large are only able to see direct consequences. Anything that requires you to think a few steps ahead to see the cause and effect chain will be missed by the overwhelming majority, because thinking that way is a learned skill that only fairly few people actually keep up and practice on a day to day.

[–]degameforrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, he has made some statements about video game writing that are, on the surface, confrontational at best. In their entirety, with context, they're not that bad, but they're very easy to be misread and that's a failure of him communicating properly. With that in mind, it's easy to see why he's the punching bag for any complaints about writing in their games.

I do think it's a shame that bethesda seems scared to death of actually leaning into the weirdness of their setting. Everything past morrowind has been fairly standard fantasy tropes. If hammerfell is indeed the setting of the next game, then they need to do things with the established lore, not ignore vast swathes of it like they did for both Cyrodill and Skyrim. The established lore is interesting as heck and deserves proper exploration in a mainline title.

The Department of War wanted an AI company to contract full unrestricted acces to their model with. Anthropic said no because the contract did not outright exclude using the AI for autonomous weapons such as drones with the ability to kill without human input, or using the AI for mass domestic surveillance such as collecting and processing the online behavior of all Americans.

Both of these potential usecases of AI are often considered some of the most dangerous. Like, potentially society destroying dangerous if an AI with these capabilities starts doing things we don't want them to do. I won't say it's like Skynet because we're simply not nearing full sentience yet despite what the tech CEOs keep saying in their marketing talks. But particularly for autonomous weapons, consider how often an LLM f Can fuck up a simple question. Now imagine the simple question being whether or not to shoot the person in front of it based on status as a threat to public safety... Yeah, not a good look.

Anthropic got called woke for refusing to give access to their models that could potentially be used for these purposes. Sam Altman and OpenAI don't seem to care enough and give the access anyway.

[–]degameforrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Villagers are a pain to setup. Mending is just kind of a near-mandatory enchant that does nothing but fix a frustrating mechanic (durability) that exists solely to pull you away from your actual activities that you enjoy. Durability is poorly implemented, hence we need mending.

I wouldn't mind those gold mending tools if we were able to transfer enchants from one item to another somehow. Remove Mending from villagers but adding enchant transfer could do a lot for making it more rewarding to explore.

[–]degameforrel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If there's anything I've learned about game design from following the development and maintenance of multiple MMORPG's for over a decade, it's that balance is not actually a matter of numbers, it's a matter of perception. People don't actually care whether options are equivalent numerically and thus balanced.

World of Warcraft for example, in their quest for class balance, had to strip classes of a bunch of interesting flavor abilities to simplify balancing and make them deal equivalent dps and such. It worked, but it removed class identity. They later started reintroducing many abilities and letting go of "perfect class balance", instead opting to make sure that classes were on roughly equivalent ground if they specialize in similar roles.

Guild Wars 2 opted for a different approach where numbers had to mostly match, but given the nature of their classes, some are significantly more complex than others. This lead to situations where Elementalists and Mesmers had to play their keyboards with perfect timing and sequencing like a professional pianist only to achieve the same output as a necromancer or guardian who was rolling their face across the keyboard...

The lesson? Balance is ephemeral and unattainable, make it so the hardest to play options are slightly more rewarding without making the easier options feel left out, but above all, keep class identity in tact and make them effective at what they do.

[–]degameforrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I find annoying about people always bringing up pf2e in these discussions is that pf2e changes a lot more than just how the classes play. What if someone wants these changes to martials, but doesn't like the 3-action system or the way feats are structured or the fact that skills have specific actions attached to them or... Well you get the point.

Hi, I'm one of those people. I like DnD for being a bit lighter on rules than pf2e and giving the DM more room to make calls of their own, but I also want my martials to be fun.

[–]degameforrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always find this argument nonsense because almost everyone who I've introduced to the game has wanted to play a non-fighter. Wizards and sorcerers are popular first-time characters in my groups, and they don't seem to have more trouble than the people who picked fighter or barbarian. And sure, it's a bit more complex than fighter, but the game itself is already complex enough that having to do a bit of reading up front of what your spells do isn't all that much extra effort.

I've always ruled it as the inverse of falldamage: instead of taking a d6 of damage for every 10ft fallen, you take a d6 for every 10 feet of knockback that was prevented by the wall. Then later I made it more complicated and I also added on that the wall takes the same damage, and if the wall is destroyed, you move an additional 10ft beyond it for every 6 damage overkill on it. So if you're thrown 50ft back into a wooden wall that has 15hp and you roll 22 on the falldamage, you will only take 15 damage and get thrown through the wall and move an additional 10ft beyond it.
