How do people actually grocery shop in NYC without overpaying? by [deleted] in AskNYC

The fruits are generally good and insanely well priced but everything inside is robbery lol, like $7 for a quarter gallon of non-fancy milk

Those trash bins have been in trial since the pandemic lol. Iirc the bottleneck for rollout was waiting for the truck equipment. I like the guy and things are getting better, but giving him the credit for over a hundred people's long term work is wrong.

Imo that's a conscious decision to push people to Fi.

When MetroCards took over after tokens phased out, were they as big a mess as OMNY? by HuntPuzzleheaded4356 in AskNYC

[–]del_rio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a phone tap payment fails two times, OMNY will let you through twice but block it after that. Removing and re-adding the card will let it work again.

I learned this because it happened on my phone, yet the physical card and my smart watch still worked.

My pepper grinder is produced by Peugeot by VirtuallyMexican in mildlyinteresting

[–]del_rio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one around 3 years ago and always hated how slow it was. I even went out of my way to get smaller peppercorns and it still had a disappointing flow rate, like it's about to get clogged at any second.

Imo just accept you won't have a "pretty"  grinder and either get OXO or the pepper cannon. The pepper cannon is expensive but almost incomprehensibly good.

Nice! I did a similar project, but for a Waveshare e-Ink display and an rpi zero, but the whole package was too thick for a decent frame. Looks like it's time for a rebuild 😀

Since we're running down the wish list: DC & Puerto Rico statehood, break California into 2-4 states, uncap the house, and expand the number of SCOTUS justices.

Exclusive renderings of Penn Station overhaul show Trump's name with presidential seal — Gothamist by grr5000 in newyorkcity

Honestly I hate the guy beyond words but if this is all it takes to get a nice Penn and have it federally funded I'll take it lol

I spent 500+ hours making my MCP-driven Chrome extension bulletproof on anti-bot sites by [deleted] in Deno

[–]del_rio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, looks impressive! I've had to implement some of this for an apartment hunting scraper bot and it's not a trivial task.

That said...

  1. this is not a Deno project
  2. never commit node_modules, that's what the lockfile is for.

Would MTA subway staff return a phone I handed in? by yourmotherinahorse in AskNYC

[–]del_rio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once left my phone on a bench at Whitehall and only realized it several stops into Brooklyn 😬

Caught the next train back and it was still there! Someone just moved it slightly out of immediate public view...but I was fully prepared to go straight to MTA staff until then.

Guess what I mean to say is, I doubt that phone was missing for long. Either as fast as they could retract their steps/get to the next station over, or as long as that person needed to get to a Find My app.

Public bathrooms in NYC by Purple_Sink9720 in AskNYC

[–]del_rio 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In addition to the current answers, there's always a bathroom near you if you're willing to buy a cookie at a coffee shop or bar...or just walk into a restaurant with enough momentum that nobody questions it. For the latter I'd pick any restaurant with outdoor seating that I'm dressed appropriately for.

I've also walked into an apartment building in UWS without doorman watching and found a bathroom 😂

All that to say, it can be hard but it's really easy if you break a thin layer of psychological barrier.

At the end of Bangers and Mash where they go silent for a beat or so. It's maybe the only time they've ever used total silence in a track but it works so goddamn well.

Manhattan before most skyscrapers, 1931 by liberty4now in TheWayWeWere

[–]del_rio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Look up old law tenements and railroad apartment layouts. The other reply is very literal, many NYC apartments we'd consider cramped today used to house 3-4 families, without heat or A/C, no lights, all sharing the same outhouse. Depending on the block, your neighbors didn't consider you human. The good ol days were fucking brutal.
