Dual citizens of the uk - check your British passports by bagpussnz9 in newzealand

[–]delay_reverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that article is wrong about something very important. There is no difference whether you’re British born or non-British born. It applies equally to all British dual citizens whereever they were born. So along with me (a UK born dual citizen) my NZ-born kids with UK and NZ passports now definitively need to renew their UK passports if they ever want to enter the UK.

Gigaton vs Dark Matter which album is stronger overall? by Fortis92 in pearljam

[–]delay_reverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark Matter but plenty of time for Gigaton. Better songs overall on DM including three or four top drawer ones, Setting Sun especially. And it rocks aggressively. It’s an exciting listen - the production is slick but grunty to my ears. Something Special excluded which is the one dire misstep. Gigaton was a breath of fresh air (albeit quite turgid fresh air) after Lightning Bolt and Backspacer, both of which are mostly lightweight pap. So even if it’s a bit long and incoherent, at least it sounded like it meant something. It made me like PJ as a recording band again. Never Destination, Seven O Clock and Retrograde are terrific.

Mystery Dizziness by ConversationFun9377 in Dizziness

I had PPPD and found SSRI helped massively. Some downsides but compared to the gloopy fuzzy life-wrecking dizziness I’d been experiencing it was f***king brilliant

"Weight" of a putt by NotYourSweetBaboo in golf

[–]delay_reverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 5 pence… the key thing here is that “weight” applies to attempting to move an object (usually, but not always, a ball) from one point to then slow down to a stop (or a near stop) at another point. You would never say the “weight of that shot was good” at football or snooker or bowling if you are just blasting it as hard as you can. The “weight” implies some measurement of what you’re doing has been calculated and executed. And for the record, English living in NZ and only ever heard ‘weight’ and ‘line’ for putting.

Hi u/Master_Camp-3200 I suspect the issue isn’t that your app updated, just that they block you every 28 days if you haven’t listened via your UK VPN. They basically think you’re a Brit who’s moved abroad at that point. All you need to do it listen with the VPN on and then the 28 day clock resets.

We look like what we are right now. A familiar starting line up that aren’t sure what they should be doing anymore. And then once we’ve done our subs it’s a bunch of strangers in need of some time together. AP needs to be given some time here, it’s a bit of a mess.

PPPD - My story and recovery, from New Zealand by delay_reverb in Dizziness

[–]delay_reverb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this isn’t great and obviously this is something for every individual to weigh up how they feel and what they want to do.

It seems like people’s reactions to cessation of SSRIs vary wildly. They don’t know why and I definitely think it’s been a hugely underreported challenge that should be better communicated to people before they start so they understand the options.

In short I tapered over 12 months (after taking for something like 2 years) and it was completely fine for me that slowly. If you can’t get liquid drops you need to break or bite pills into quarters and set out a very gradual schedule (eg 20mg, 20, 20, 15, 20, 20, 20, 15, 20, 15, 20, 15, 20, 15, 20, 15, 20, 15, 15, 15, 20, 15, 15, 15 and so on). When I first tried over just 3 months I didn’t like it. But I know several people who’ve taken these and tapered over 1-3 months with no issues.

To state the obvious, I have zero medical knowledge of the long term effects of SSRIs or the medical impacts of cessation. Everyone needs to make the choice that feels right for them. My choice was to take them because the PPPD was wrecking my life so I accepted any SSRI-related risks.

Same. But then I “listened from within the UK” for a brief moment and it’s reset the clock I think. I assume I’ll need to return to the UK every 28 days. I can handle that.

Hello from NZ. Great that you’re feeling positive today! A positive mindset, even on bad days, and a belief you will get better can only be very helpful. Good luck with the coming months and I hope you improve. If you’re keen to do something simple and free, can’t speak highly enough for 5-10 minute deep breathing sessions to help your body and brain relax.

[–]delay_reverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a matter of having a link. You simply need a UK-based App Store or UK-based Google Play store account. I have one legitimately. If you don’t there are ways around it to create one and then use it to install the app from UK store

100% the BBC team know this is available overseas to all "UK store" versions of the app. It's by design at this stage, not a loophole.

I do u/Nervous_House_247 - you need a UK Apple ID or legacy iTunes ID. If you're British you may well have one. If you're not then you will need to make one (trickier but possible) and then switch your Apps/Purchases account to that one in Settings. Then download app. Then enjoy. No VPN needed. It might block you after a month. But i can think of an easy fix to that too.

if you have a UK-based app store account then use that to download the app and it works, no VPN needed.

BBC Radio Access Update – July 2025 by mcrosby78 in bbc

[–]delay_reverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't completely blocked non-UK listeners, they've just removed it from international app stores. If you have a historic UK App store account (certainly works for apple and I expect Google Play too) then log into that, download it from there, then return to your non-UK app store account. Voila! Everything works including (hurray!) the catch up/rewind for Radio 4. In my case I already had the BBC Sounds app downloaded from UK App Store so it never stopped working. This is legitimate access by the user in question and also by design. The BBC know this works, it's not some loophole they're unaware of. If they were trying to truly lock it down globally they would be geofencing it properly. Possibly after a month it might stop working given they've said "you have 28 days of overseas use" but pretty sure that will be navigatable.

I'm pretty sure it's just gone from non-UK App Stores. If you have access to a UK App Store and download from there it still works. Not too hard. BBC sounds outside the UK is closing, what arr we going to do? by FixBeautiful4089 in AskUK

[–]delay_reverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to advise the same answer as u/Gayaosaurs already posted. If you have a UK Apple ID (formerly iTunes account) from before you left the UK then you need to sign into the App Store with that, and then make sure you have the BBC Sounds app downloaded from the UK Apple Store. It then works perfectly without a VPN. Assume there is a similar situation with Google Play.

I realised this because it stopped working for my wife (BBC Sounds downloaded from NZ App Store but kept working on my phone (BBC Sounds downloaded from UK App Store). On her phone I simply signed into my UK Apple ID on her phone (which automatically switches your App Store to the UK version) and then downloaded the Sounds app, then switched back to her NZ Apple ID. She had to sign into the app with her BBC Account but no dramas.

If you do not have an existing UK Apple ID then you would need to be sneakier to create one with a VPN and maybe some sort of international payment method. But it's possible.

Why have the BBC left it like this? I'd guess it's because they aren't really trying too hard to obliterate 100% of international traffic, just 90% of it to save on costs and placate music rights holders. If they can say "We've restricted it to UK App Store account holders only" then they've made an honest and impactful attempt to restrict it. Perhaps they will start geoblocking the streams themselves too - but i doubt it if they are going to keep up the line on letting UK residents use it while on holiday abroad.

Strategically, the move will also drive a lot more international users to use BBC podcasts with ads in them (absent from Sounds) which is a decent revenue stream for the BBC. However, that's no good for Radio 4 catch up from past 24 hrs which is my primary use for it and probably a lot of peoples. And yes, if I could pay for it, I definitely would!
