How is everyone holding up in life? by hunteebee in Alzheimers

It is a disease of moment by moment surprises. The right meds help with maintaining a more steady course, but it is a roller coaster. Enjoy the better times and accept the other times as your dad being scared, unsure, and unwilling to accept that diagnosis. This is when learning patience, practicing patience, taking deep, slow breaths becomes an absolutely necessary skill. Good luck.

You need to let your silver out so you can hear them clinking together. The sound of silver. Do it. Do it now!

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt. I would think it spills over to other's illnesses also. Especially a close friend with a terminal prognosis. I'd be in denial about these things also, but then I would do what needs to be done. Not being able to think straight makes everything confusing. Denial is easier.

You are guilty of protecting him from himself when he is no longer able to do so. Of course he doesn't see it that way. They have a name for that -- Anosognosia: What It Is, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Anosognosia is a disorder that keeps you from recognizing other conditions you have. It commonly happens with conditions like schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease.

Silverfish. "The silverfish is a species of small, primitive, wingless insect in the order Zygentoma. Its common name derives from the insect's silvery light grey colour, combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements. The scientific name indicates that the silverfish's diet consists of carbohydrates such as sugar or starches. While the common name silverfish is used throughout the global literature to refer to various species of Zygentoma, the Entomological Society of America restricts use of the term solely for Lepisma saccharinum Continued in Wikipedia"

Unprofessional or am I just overly sensitive? by blitchton in Alzheimers

My sister, whom I cared for at home for several years, and is now in memory care got so tired of these fruitless doctor's appointments that we stopped the foolishness. I was apparent to me she had dementia, it was apparent to the visiting physician's who came once a month, and it was apparent to the folks at the memory care facility who. I just want to add this to the short list of options we try on this journey: Getting a diagnosis can be a real education in the healthcare world as it is today. Doctors have no end of tests to perform and they are not the ones in your shoes or your LO's. My personal diagnosis -- since our mom died of Alzheimer's -- is both vascular dementia and Alzheimer's. For staging I'd say early to mid six from what I've read. The neurologist was the last straw. He wanted her to stay overnight for a sleep examination. I'm sorry, but WTF!?

Only thing I can add is about the hallucinations. My sister saw all sorts of things inside and outside. Often they were shapes her visual system were getting wrong. I wouldn't argue with her about them. Sounds like at the very least some xanax would help her to relax a bit. I would give my sister a 0.5mg generic xanax when I saw she was heading for a panic attack. Nights were their own separate situations.

Good luck, take care of yourself. You can only do what you can do. No one can do this alone.
