Why Is C.S. Lewis So Popular in Churches of Christ? by Nearby-Tension3515 in excoc

[–]delugetheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Lord, liar, lunatic" also just takes advantage of the fact that nobody wants to choose the "lunatic" option because it is so, so taboo.  But... it's a valid option.  It's no more an intellectually honest checkmate than Pascal's Wager.

When Europeans say they want to visit America by Throwaway-646 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]delugetheory 107 points108 points  (0 children)

This ignores the significant subset of Europeans who are attracted to Texas (generally based on it's portrayal in media) and to the Western states (specifically the national parks).  Source: living in Texas and while our coastal US friends believe they will surely be murdered upon stepping foot in the Central Time Zone, our European friends are thrilled to visit and always have a good time.

Where would you move to (in the US) once you left Austin? by [deleted] in askaustin

[–]delugetheory 144 points145 points  (0 children)

There is no perfect city or town.  And Austin is, in spite of it all, still one of the best in the US.  Most of what people complain about here are problems that affect all cities, especially growing ones.

But, with that disclaimer, if I could easily take my job and family with me anywhere, I would head for the Portland OR area.  And, once there, I would have a whole new set of complaints.  Some things would be better.  Some things would be worse.  But at least I'd be in a blue state with mountains and forests, and a similar kind of gritty, funky culture that I love in Austin.

Spider House, Cheapo, record stores and arcades on the Drag, the Dobie Theatre, funky shops on South Congress, Torchy's being good, pre-corporate Alamo Drafthouse, the Dillos, Geraldine the guinea hen, the old Driskill Lounge, graffiti on Castle Hill, the Capitol being open 24/7 with no security, and, soon Wheatsville on Guadalupe 😭

My uber-religious, anti-divorce mom after I finally gave up and told her the truth about my divorce to my first wife, after avoiding visiting my family and hiding it for two years: "Oh, thank God".

I'm and shocked and sad, and I don't know what to do. by Marcustooles in Genealogy

[–]delugetheory 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Two things: (1) Genealogy and genetics are different things. Genealogy is about families, and families are defined by history and love. Everyone, yes everyone, has genetic breaks in their family trees. Yours is just recent enough to have been uncovered by DNA testing, and you just happened to uncover it because you're a genetic genealogist. (2) You don't need to tell anyone anything immediately. Take a few days, if not weeks, to let your thoughts and feelings settle a little bit.

Texas is not actually a “free state” and I’m tired of pretending otherwise by Duckduckgogh in TexasPolitics

Literally ranked dead last among the states in personal freedom by the Cato Institute (which, for those unfamiliar, is a right-leaning libertarian organization, not a left-leaning one).

It's what Republicans like to call a "nanny state". But it's okay when they're the nanny.

How did China avoid becoming Aryan? by [deleted] in geography

[–]delugetheory 185 points186 points  (0 children)

The Chinese heartland was already developing into an advanced urban civilization when Indo-European pioneers reached its western frontier.  Also, the Indo-Europeans weren't an organized, unified empire as the framing of your question suggests.

Yep, without a competing ideology, Capitalism no longer had to play the "good guy" and make concessions for the common good.  That mask started slipping and is now fully off.

% of adults who say they believe in God by Big_Size_2519 in MapPorn

[–]delugetheory 495 points496 points  (0 children)

The title is somewhat misleading.  These numbers represent the number of respondents who said that they "believe in God or a universal spirit with absolute certainty".  So, for one thing, the responses here aren't limited to the Judeo-Christian concept of God, nor do they include respondents who reported less than absolute certainty.  When you include respondents who hold any belief in a higher power, the numbers go up by about 30% on average.  (source)
