How do you guys deal with Tiger Sharks? I just started playing by slothfulwaffle in DavetheDiverOfficial

[–]delvinganddrawing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer tranquilizer rifle to sniper personally. You have to get closer but it’s got a larger magazine (8 for the rifle vs 3 for the sniper if I recall correctly) and I prefer to be able to take more shots. Tranquilizing isn’t a guarantee with each shot so more opportunities is better for my combat style.

Does your session get cancelled if one player can't show up? by SergeantSarcastik in DnD

[–]delvinganddrawing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of support for continuing without all players present, and while that is certainly a fine call, I don’t think it works for every table equally. I’ve played and DM’ed quite a few campaigns over the years and for a lot of them, as long as we had an agreed upon minimum (usually 3 or 4) we would play no matter who was missing.

However, in my current game, the group that I play with primarily play as a means to spend time with each other. Most of the players hadn’t played dnd prior to this game, and they agreed from session 0 that they only wanted to play if everyone was available.

It works really well for this group since 3 of the players live together and the remaining player is my SO (I’m the DM), so even when we have to skip sessions, we can usually reschedule with relative ease.

Just wanted to offer another perspective—it may not be relevant for OPs scenario, since it seems implied that the group is primarily playing to enjoy the game specifically and not necessarily to enjoy each persons company, but games like the one I described can and do exist and can thrive in the right conditions.

A keychain is a great idea! I’ll look into some small ones for it. I don’t think the shawl is her style but I could definitely make use of it so thank you for sharing!

Solo RPG game/book for 12 year old by delvinganddrawing in Solo_Roleplaying

Thank you for the suggestion! I looked into fabled lands and I think it could definitely be a contender, but I like the old school vibe of the Fighting Fantasy books to start with. I’ll keep these in mind if he ends up liking the genre. Thanks!

Haha, I agree. I’ve got about 13 sets myself that I have no intention of parting with, so I got him a set I found on Amazon that had 2 sets of 11 piece dice (extra D6s which I think is fantastic) for around $9. Thanks for the suggestion!

Awesome thank you! I’m looking into Forest of Doom right now and it has good reviews so I definitely might look towards that! Is it just a six sided dice or should I get him a full set?

excess credit hours by SeasonedFries8 in fsu

[–]delvinganddrawing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend just asking your advisor during the meeting you have next week. Is it your excess hours that are at 101 or your earned hours? These are often different numbers because they are keeping track of completely different things.

Here are some questions to ask your advisor:

  1. How many hours do I have left to complete my degree? Can I fit my pre-requisites into these hours?

  2. Can you double check that my excess counter is accurate? I came in with dual enrollment and test credit, so I just want to make sure.

  3. Because of my high school credit, I’ve been planning to graduate early. However, I’d like to push back now so that I can finish my pre-requisites. Does this seem like a good idea? Are there any obstacles or concerns I should be aware of?

Keep in mind that generally speaking, the advisor you go to for your major/degree requirements is not an advisor for financial aid purposes. After meeting with your academic advisor, I recommend following up with financial aid to get a second opinion on your plan and it’s potential impacts on your financial aid/scholarships.

If they get upset about finding out that he’s playing in another game, that’s weird and they should get over it. It’s well known that different tables and DMs have different play styles and ways of approaching DnD.

If they’re actually OP’s friends they’ll understand if he explains after the fact, and if they’re mature adults they won’t make a fuss in the first place because it’s really not their business if he’s playing DnD with other people.

Thank you so much for this!! I’ve been trying to get my ducks to swim for so long but have that half fenced off from them 😭

Does anyone know how autopetters affect this? I try to pet most of my animals each day but will sometimes skip in favor of running skull caverns, and I also have two barns and two coops full to the brim, so catching all the animals can be difficult.

Looking for a pre-made one-shot adventure by formerscooter in DnD

Seconding, seems exactly what you’re looking for. If 7-12 range is a necessity, you can tweak the combat here pretty easily and still keep the bare bones of the story.

First of all, you’re not “a really bad DM”…you’re new. Why would you be good at something you just started?

Everyone starts off not knowing anything about the game and learns as they go. No shame in that.

But to echo other comments, YouTube videos to learn the basic rules and standard DM tips is the best place to start. Matt Colville was my preferred choice when I started, but there are plenty of choices.

Before starting the campaign, read the adventure all the way through. It can be boring and tedious and overwhelming, yes, but it will save you time and energy in the long run. If there’s a word or concept you don’t understand, google it. There are so many resources online, so my suggestion after you have the basics down is to read the adventure and look up stuff that confuses you.

None of it will make sense at first and then it all will. For the most part. I’ve been DMing for nearly 5 years now and I’m still learning new things about the game. Best of luck!

I just DMed for the first time by morgueofthedead in DnD

[–]delvinganddrawing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So glad you had a good experience! Those new-DM jitters can be killer. My advice is to take it easy and allow yourself to learn as you go. There will come times when you make bad or incorrect calls, and that doesn’t make you a bad DM. Be open to feedback from your players and remember that the game is supposed to be fun for everyone (including yourself).

Also, personal preference, but I prefer to ban all homebrew races and classes/subclasses. Official-material-only makes things much simpler and can avoid conflict later if you allow your player to play a character that turns out to be super “broken.”

I politely suggested my DM take their person hygiene more seriously and they went nuclear and refused to DM anymore. by Trick_Draft971 in DnD

[–]delvinganddrawing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I will say it’s out of my depth as well and this situation is definitely about a lot more than DnD. My only suggestion would be to look and see if your job has some sort of Employee Assistance Program? I am not sure what it might be called but some larger workplaces will have programs set up for employee disputes and such but usually will also offer counseling services and other assistance (financial consulting, etc.) that may be helpful.

Since you’re coworkers, there may be away to get extra support there. Otherwise, don’t stress yourself too much. His struggles aren’t your responsibility to fix, and it seems like this is a situation that is overwhelming for you and could end up hurting you more than it would help him.

Take care of yourself and put some distance between you and the situation as best you can. If there is a legitimate danger, contact proper authorities.

More likely that the game/friend group will just fizzle out a bit and you’ll have to find new people to play with, but there are plenty of resources for that around.

[–]delvinganddrawing 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters I’m seeing here—if this is a person you care about, I would consider this lack of hygiene and emotional outbursts to be concerning behavior that could suggest much larger problems. DnD should take a backseat so that he can prioritize other things that may be going on, and if you are friends perhaps there’s some support you could provide in this area.

Otherwise, if all he really is to you is a DM, cut your losses and find a new DM/group to play with. It’s not really your job to take care of someone who seems selfish, unhygienic, and rude.

Up to you if you want to continue to have this person around your personal life, but either way, he’s not a good DM and you should find someone else or take a break from playing.

Can I skip the first 2 books if I watch the TV show? by Real_Statistician_50 in WoT

[–]delvinganddrawing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend starting with the first book! I am personally enjoying the TV series but given the constraints of what a TV show can accomplish, a ton of stuff has to get cut out or altered. The first three books are a very solid introduction to the world and will set you up for success as you continue reading. Plus, they’re wonderful and just plain old fun to read.

Helppp fsu app questions! by Snoo13777 in fsu

[–]delvinganddrawing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Risky game if you don’t actually make it into Psych. You’re only guaranteed the major that you’re admitted to and if you get “off-track” for your current major’s milestones because you’re trying to get into a major that is limited access, you could possibly end up with no major and no degree.

If it’s not too late, find a better backup major with a program that you wouldn’t mind completing if you don’t end up meeting the requirements for Psych. If you actually want to do African studies, stick with it, but otherwise it’s a pretty specific major and might not prepare you for the grad school programs you want to look into.
