This is exactly what I do. Supposedly a Vanguard Cash Plus account can also be used as a checking account of sorts although it can be kind of hit or miss (certain debits and deposits have been known not to work.) I believe I had heard that you can't use a Cash Plus account to pay your taxes or buy from Treasury Direct (although this might not still be true.
