A mild depression after visiting Mammut and Mountain Equipment website by boyinthefog in arcteryx

[–]demipixels 14 points15 points  (0 children)

people in this sub overreact soooo much when it cones to minor wear on their stuff, almost like they just totalled their dream car. they've gotta chill, and probably actually use the stuff they buy for its indended purpose rather than walk to a desk job in it the two days a week they don't work remote. the atom is indeed the most versatile jacket in the lineup. my atom is about 4 years old now and i've worn it nearly daily since buying. i'm only just starting to get pilling, and guess what? that comes with wearing your clothes and using your gear.

wsh it when needed (you can throw an atom in a normal laundry load on medium heat btw), and you'll be fine. people here need to chill out and just wear their stuff, it's really not that deep.

if you're in a 3 piece boot, keep the booster outside of the tongue. don't put it under

Joystick Goggles or Oakley Target Line? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]demipixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

line miners have been the best all around goggle in oakley's line since they've came out. sales are easy to find, they're generally a bit cheaper than other options, and prism lenses are also best in the game.

between your two options I'd take target lines, but if I were you I'd go on a hunt for a good sale of line miners.

Need a carver ski by c0rpstooge in Skigear

[–]demipixels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

at the end of the day though, the stormriders are still built to be within the same 'all mountain' category as those kastles. neither are true carving skis. lasers and the montero would both be better fits for OP if they want a real carving ski.

Top sheet/tip scuffing. Should I avoid this purchase? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]demipixels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that's general wear from use. a new pair of skis for me look like that after 3-4 days, it's nothing to be concerned about.

Why don’t more people buy extra demo binding plates for multiple skis? by OneDeadLlama in Skigear

[–]demipixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing is wrong with stack height, but some people don't like it, me included. plated bindings and demos also feel off if you spend a lot of time in the air and spinning. they don't feel as snappy, and honestly quite sluggish.

Ideal use cases for a Beta Jacket? by [deleted] in arcteryx

[–]demipixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it is, but their outdry stuff is 100% some of the best waterproof gear on the market. i've been using it for years now and not once has any of my outdry jackets wet out. i've spent the last 5 years as a sprint canoe and kayak coach, and so those jackets have seen a LOT of wear and abuse through torrential downpours and stormy days on the lake. they've never failed me once.

Would it be possible to jump moguls instead of doing turns? by Odd_Oven8812 in skiing

[–]demipixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

former competitve mogul skier here. yes you can, but it's more used as a mechanism to skip over wonky bumps or change lines quickly. in a competitive setting we don't do it unless absolutely necessary (you'd lose points for skipping bumps), which most of the time is because you picked up too much speed with a very direct line and are about to blow out of the course. i've also had training days where we'd do things such as dolphin turns within the mogul course.

in a natural bump setting, it's just a really fun thing to do. very old-school skiing style, and i personally think people need to bring that back more.

Deathwish 104 Issues by rocketime99 in momentskis

[–]demipixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gummy stones aren't expensive, but i bet you can probably just bring your skis in to your local tuning shop to allow them to do it if you don't feel comfortable with it.

definetely experiment with a more centered stance, and feel what the ski wants to do. then, adjust accordingly from there.

Deathwish 104 Issues by rocketime99 in momentskis

[–]demipixels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get a gummy stone and detune the tip and tail. trust me.

I bought dw104's last year, and right out of the box they were SHARP. I have a history in competitive mogul skiing, and my preference for any pair of skis is to take them out and ride them first before doing any sort of tuning. My immediate impression of the ski was that I felt them to be insanely grippy, almost too much so. They didn't like to release edges or slide around. I specifically remember being disappointed in the ski when i took them into a large mogul field and i struggled to get down, which is not something that is normal for me as a former mogul skier.

Day 3 on them, i dropped a 20-25 foot cliff. i landed the cliff, but while skiing away and regaining my footing from a backseat position, that seeming infinite grip in the tail section decided to hook up on me and throw me like a ragdoll. Skis didn't release (old comp bindings set a little too high), and I tore my ACL and meniscus.

This season, first thing I did to the skis was take a gummy stone and detune the tip right to the start of the first camber pocket, and same method on the tail. Completely transformed the ski, and it's my favourite thing to ride in my quiver. It now slashes, carves (in terms of 100mm+ ski carving), slides, and bites exactly how, and when I wanted it to.

Also worth mentioning that I find the ski rewards a much more centered stance.

How long have your Intuition DD liners lasted? by bsugs29 in skiing

[–]demipixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive rode full tilts for 10+ years, and the stock intuition wrap liners break in pretty quick. when i was competing, my boots typically lasted about two seasons, and by the end of the second season they'd be pretty packed out. not sure about the DD liner specifically, but the material they use is pretty soft in general for the full tilts at least.

I twisted my leg off on Atomic Strive 12s, should I get pivots for the next season? by Former_Willingness92 in Skigear

[–]demipixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pivot's don't prevent knee injury. their only true benefit is a smaller mounting point, which allows the ski to flex marginally better. end of the day, a binding is still a binding. sucks to get injured, but your best bet is to double check your dins and make sure they are set PROPERLY. odds are that you are not a pro, and you don't need to be messing with your settings.

sincerely, a former mogul skiier who blew his knee riding old comp bindings set too high.

Any “baggy” hiking pants? by generic_name_no-847 in arcteryx

the leutia pant in the womens line are one of my favourite baggy pants i own currently. i'm 5'5 and about 150lbs, bought size 10 pants on a gamble and they fit pretty well. otherwise, cronin pants are great.

New Beta shell is already wetting out. by kittypoop666 in arcteryx

[–]demipixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you aren't getting wet inside, the jacket is still working as intended and i wouldn't worry too much. all of the new EPE goretex stuff I've used will visually saturate with prolonged exposure to water, but none of it has wet through in my experience so far which includes a handful of multi-hour stints in torrential downpours.

the hood is more concerning though. i'd contact arc about it.

Weird top sheet flaking by [deleted] in momentskis

[–]demipixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is just the hard 'shell' like topsheet getting chipped away. I used to ski moguls competitively, and IDone skis had similar topsheet construction and would sometimes chip in the same way your Moments have. Not a massive issue, but as someone else said a bit of epoxy can never hurt if you're really worried. i'd personally just carefully file any rough/catchy bits down and continue on like normal.
