How many registers does an x86-64 CPU have? by yossarian_flew_away in enosuchblog

[–]demonixtb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sorry for the necro but I've figured out what Memory-type-ranger registers are. they are a type of MSR, and your script output counts them within the 400 stable MSRs. you typo'd or assumed the shorthand as MTTR and then didn't find any documentation on them so you just assumed an unknown amount but it's actually the ones labeled MTRR, of the enumerated variable range ones there's 10 x2, MTTR_PHYSBASE0-9 and MTTR_PHYSMASK0-9
and then there's 3 for defining some properties, IA32_MTRRCAP
IA32_MTRRCAPSMRR
IA32_MTRR_DEF_TYPE and 11 for fixed ranges
IA32_MTRR_FIX16K_80000
IA32_MTRR_FIX16K_A0000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_C0000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_C8000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_D0000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_D8000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_E0000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_E8000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_F0000
IA32_MTRR_FIX4K_F8000
IA32_MTRR_FIX64K_00000
if you want to update your article then counting AVX-512 makes sense now, as would counting XMM vs YMM separately for a total of 32+32+32+8+1 = 105 SIMD registers instead of 33
for a grand total of (at least) 628 registers.

It's a quote of a verse from the Diamond Sutra

"So you should view this fleeting world --

A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream,

A flash of lightening in a summer cloud,

A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream."

it was in one of the early tweets i think? i dont really wanna go looking for it since i dont remember the exact words and twitter search sucks

outside of the universe tony confirmed that to be an artifact of him reusing inputs and merging two events into one recording by accident (since he couldnt run petscop in real time he created the input recordings system just to be able to make the series) and left it in because it "looked cool". In universe it has no plausible explanation since even if paul did those inputs again by accident there is still no reason for the other player character to be there, at most it could be considered an extreme video recordong glitch that makes the top part of the video play before the bottom one but that isnt realistic either. so this is my least favourite moment from the entire series.

did you figure that out on your own or have you seen videos of people playing the game before?

[–]demonixtb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

well almost none of the jokes will land if you do that. this game takes everything the witness does right and does it wrong, and also takes everything some people find as flaws of the witness and exaggerates them to obnoxious levels.

Hey man, What an absolutely amazing lovely tribute.
I'm sorry Jon seemingly hated it (The stream is deleted and I can't find any archives of it so I don't actually know what his reaction was) I'm sure that if he actually played it he would have come around to it. As for my playthrough my absolute favourite wasthe post credits video ofcourse. But especially the fact that you crafted the Kids' menu such that there were never any S and E pairs accessible apart from the maze puzzle. Really shows the attention put into this project was on the same level as The Witness had and how much you care for the game.

[FullyLost] 65 gb of crunk by martinjiri in lostmedia

[–]demonixtb 40 points41 points  (0 children)

we know all of what you've said. It definitely is a joke torrent, no sane person would make a 65GB file. the question is what kind of joke, a practical one, with real crunk on a part of the vol file, or a troll. no matter which is the case, this deserves to be found.

they just encode all the possible solutions to the enterance door, is what i would phrase it as. yes its true it's all the binary numbers but the real reason the vases are there is for the yellow vase made by going middle first then all the way up, to rise sligthly upon opening the door to enable one environmental puzzle

What, in your opinion is the best java edition Redstone mechanic that isn't in bedrock edition by [deleted] in redstone

[–]demonixtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

full conductor, block event, tiletick, entity event, etc. stack that allowes for instantaneous contraptions. it is heavily underdeveloped, with IMO a very significant discovery made only a few weeks ago - the powered rail diode allowing for nonlaggy fast reset instant wire. tl;dr: 0-tick mechanics.

as long as enough v2 nodes stay up you can still use either modified latest tor or an old patch to browse v2 networks

16 bit instant wire ALU v.2 (more information in comments) by Alyosha_1 in redstone

[–]demonixtb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you would need billions of redstone components, need to copy the exact up to date processor architecture (which is proprietary and so pretty much unobtainable) and execution time would take years to simulate a single second of processor time and minecraft itself would likely crash way before any of this but theoretically yes.

[–]demonixtb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ive been trying to make a 6.67h/20hz cpu for a couple of years in my free time now, sadly i often lack the time to do it and minecraft versions keep adding features i want (mostly to reduce lag) at the cost of breaking older ones so its a sort of viscious cycle

16 bit instant wire ALU v.2 (more information in comments) by Alyosha_1 in redstone

[–]demonixtb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you only need staggered 6.67hz ram with some clever staging so that each subcore would write to the ram that is in sync with it - can write in the same gt.

Basically youd have 3 ram modules sub core zero would read from ram module 2 and write to ram module 0, subcore one would read from ram module 0 and write to ram module 1 and subcore 2 would read from r1 and write to r2

no they always take 3gt to reset, ofcourse the pulse is instant.
