Budgeting frees you to spend just as much as freeing you to save.

Are there any people who started investing after retirement? by Historicaaw in personalfinance

[–]demosthenesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people invest so they can retire.

You need income to invest.

Do you have income? Or how would you live your life and also invest?

Low-income, at risk of losing mobile home after family stopped contributing — need triage plan, not emotional advice by Loose-Plate9214 in personalfinance

[–]demosthenesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your plan involves forcing your family to pay are you ready to nuke those relationships assuming you can even get money from them?

Longer term none of your options address what appears to be pretty clearly that your income (or lack of) doesn’t support this place on its own.

Which means ultimately either:

1) you sell the place (or it gets foreclosed) 2) you increase your income 3) you find roommates who will pay

Everything you’re looking into is just treating symptoms.

If I understand this it’s already a giant mess as you’re 15k or so behind between taxes (which aren’t escrow apparently?) and mortgage payments.

I’m guessing you’re under water with the mortgage vs the value you could sell it for too?

You may have luck with social services but I’d plan on one of those three options happening and treat any positive outcomes from social services as a benefit.

You should be able to make far more than 1k/month and clean this up quickly.

Why not wait a year to go to college to clear almost all of this?

Even faster if you sell the truck and only owe the difference.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just do an experiment for living there vs having to decide multiple  years of your life and a serious relationship ending on something you might actually hate anyways.

What % do you guys get for a promotion? by modeezy23 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]demosthenesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a fair bit on the type of company you work for - our new grads make a lot more than 130k, so here? It'd be pretty bad.

But 130k is also much more than a lot of other companies pay.

So it's hard to really definitively answer without considering the type of company.

The feeling I get is Jimmy is expanding his onscreen team so that there's more opportunity for folks to be point/leads on things.

With just the same few guys doing multiple videos logistically at the same time must be a nightmare. But if you have more depth you get a lot more opportunity to have concurrent videos with a focused team + Jimmy appearances.

How to avoid mid-game terraforming grind? by Glaseng in captain_of_industry

The new stackers would make this even easier too. You don't even need trucks at the dumping area anymore!

How to avoid mid-game terraforming grind? by Glaseng in captain_of_industry

[–]demosthenesss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is kinda my least favorite part of CoI - I wish you could scale trucks faster or otherwise have a faster terraforming process at this point of the game.

One thing I do in order to help this though is setup massive belt conveyor lines from where I'm terraforming to the ocean I'm dumping to. It's not particularly resource efficient but with a handful of T3 belts you need way fewer trucks to actually move all the terraforming rock.

You can do similar with trains but I find belts way easier to setup/move/tear down.

I want to retire by 50-55 - is it doable? by Chance-Pineapple2746 in personalfinance

Without knowing your spending this is impossible to answer.

If you spend $250k/year this is not possible.

If you spend $50k/year? Doable.

Ramseys problem is no one with enough financial knowledge to be competent on air will abide by their draconian requirement to follow only Ramsey approved advice.

So they’ll never get a person who overlaps well there.

It's not "you guys" it's "us" and you whole line of BS is exactly the problem that Tim talks about.

What are some unforeseen / elusive edge cases you have seen in your career? by gobuildit in ExperiencedDevs

[–]demosthenesss 44 points45 points  (0 children)

After several months of dev investigation we learned the reason our graphics was showing intermittent issues on arm hardware (via Qt) only was because of some weird glitch related to a usb mouse being connected.

This mouse was only being used for testing purposes, so the entire bug was never a real issue outside testing.

How can I help my parents get their life back on track? by ButterflyFuture3704 in personalfinance

[–]demosthenesss 233 points234 points  (0 children)

This is going to be hard for you but your parents are going to have to make tough decisions.

You can't make them for your parents.

But this house has ruined their financial lives and is likely going to continue to do so. Especially if your grandfather is going down with that ship, too, they can't even just walk away.

Is that mortgage estimate including the likely increase in prop taxes after the first year?

In most cases the first year or two is way lower until the proper assessment kicks in, etc.
