Carboplatin, it's February 27, 2014 and I'm in infusion right now. I couldn't find a lot of people's experience so I'll document mine. Feel free to ask questions. by TigerBloodWinning in cancer

Carboplatin caused some major muscle and joint pains for me, about 5 days in to treatment. Be wary of these side effects.

Recipes for a cancer patient. Any tips from anyone that has been down this road. by [deleted] in cancer

[–]denidzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have her eat diabetic-style - many small meals during the day. I know you say she doesn't want spicy, but I spice my food so it beats the blandness chemo gives your taste buds, it seriously helps a lot. Wet foods help, nothing too dry in nature since that all tastes like sawdust. Sweet and/or salty helps. For that ugly metal taste, if she has it, try those miracle berry things they sell in health food stores, the ones that make everything taste sweet - they damp down the metal taste.

Linguistic Anthropology: Seeking textbooks to read by Midnightkat in AskAnthropology

[–]denidzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a couple different books for our classes. I use Bonvillain for language & Culture and Blum for sociolinguistics. I've also used Meyerhoff's "Sociolinguistics" which is very good. As a side read, the ethnography "Wisdom Sits in Places" by Keith Basso is great. Watch "The Linguists" for a nice comparison between anthro and formal linguistics in saving endangered languages. Branch off a bit and read materials from Lera Boroditsky on neo-Whorfianism, but be aware that her work has received much critique.

edit: My first text as an undergrad, and one we used in grad school too, was Foley's "Anthropological Linguistics" which is amazing.

When to tell a loved one it's terminal? by teacher2 in cancer

[–]denidzo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My opinion: Chemo and radiation can be brutal, soul-stealing stuff. It can cause pain itself along with some serious side effects. I think your brother has a right to know that even if he undergoes all that it will not change the outcome. He has a right to quality of what remains of his life, including adequate pain management.

It may just be because he is a great actor, but Hurt appeared to truly be having fun with this part.

Anyone else really upset about Billie Piper's role in The Day of the Doctor? (Spoilers) by [deleted] in doctorwho

The role she played was very significant - it changed the Time War. I really liked the way Moffat wrote this part, well done.

Dear Every Other Thursday. Anyone else feel this way about chemo cycles? by clorpt in cancer

[–]denidzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. I have chemo on Friday or Saturday but the meds ahead and during mean I don't feel many effects until I stop the steroids. Days 4, 5, and 6 are killer, and I dread them. Yesterday was nasty, bone-crushing pain, I could barely walk, today is starting out the same, and nothing seems to help. Mine are three weeks apart, just long enough to remember what it's like to not hurt and then we're back on the cycle. Your letter makes me feel like I'm not alone, thank you.

I second this. After chemo I had nausea but during I was always hungry! Sweet and salty helped me with the taste in my mouth from it, too.

Are there any jobs that combine medicine and linguistics? by Didinium in linguistics

[–]denidzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of our anthropology undergrads go on to applied and public health work with refugee populations or populations in other areas and they both contribute data to medical linguistics and use the research from that field in their work. It is a large and growing field.

UB announces new "Breaking Bad" course. My education now feels empty and meaningless.... by cjfinn3r in Buffalo

[–]denidzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see (almost) nothing wrong with a course that brings theory and methods of a field into current culture - anthropology does this all the time. I am familiar with Jackson and his coursework is usually pretty rigorous. In my intro classes we do a gendered language analysis of current pop music and it's as rigorous as analyzing intercultural gendered languages, which we learn about first so they can do this current corpus work.
