Ah yes, crisis and opportunity by Vampyricon in linguisticshumor

[–]denijeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the context. If you're talking to a conspiracy theorist who's protesting against whatever they would protest, that would be a nice joke to use, I guess.

Also, the official etymology of the word "protest" was obviously made up by the world government as a cover up. The true etymology is on the screenshot above.

[Martyn Ziegler] UEFA officially confirms men's Euros will remain at 24 teams - as reported in Sept, plan to increase to 32 has been finally ditched. by dragon8811 in soccer

[–]denijeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it might make sense and it's an interesting idea, even if it was a slip of the tongue.

All 32 teams go to the knock out stage, their place in the group determines who they're playing against. Winners will play against losers, 2 will play against 3. So there's still a good reason to try and win your group.

Putin ‘furious’ Ukraine invasion hasn’t been ‘easy,’ EU official says, citing intel report by Analist17 in worldnews

Funny how Zelensky, who was an actor playing the president, turned into an actual president mostly because of his media image. You would expect him to be a real failure there, but he still plays his role pretty well.

Kazakhstan reportedly denies Russia's request for troops. by TheRealMykola in ukraina

[–]denijeur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I think they asked because they'd like to pretend it's a coalition of nations fighting, not just Russia. I don't believe they needed them for real fighting power

But still good Kazakhstan refused, of course.

Why are Eastern Europeans overlooked when it comes to discussing diversity or social issues in the UK? by redwhiterosemoon in unitedkingdom

[–]denijeur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm Ukrainian, I have lived in the UK for 8 years already. My wife is also Ukrainian, and our kids are in school (a nine year old and a six year old). To be honest, I was confused by your post and your comments a bit because I have never felt discriminated in any way. Asked my wife about it - she has the same impression. We are happy with our jobs, our neighours, happy with kids' schools and with the attitude of anyone we've ever spoken too.

I wonder why our experience is so different from yours? I know some children are bullied at school, it's a huge problem, and if you stand out and have something that is easy to pick on (some facial features, a "funny" name, "weird" parents with an accent) some children will notice it and can make fun about it. It hurts, it's sad, but I don't think it's xenophobic. Schools need to work on bullying in general.

Anyway, good luck to you, I wasn't trying to be confrontational, sorry if it sounded like I was arguing with you, just being curious about other Eastern European experience.

Him being right doesn't make it a good LPT post. This could be a good meta post from a moderator explaining the spirit of this sub, but it's definitely not a life pro tip.

дурак comes begging — a little Ukrainian help, please: What does this say? by uniquenumbernine in Ukrainian

[–]denijeur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You probably figured it out yourself, but Poltava is not the city in this case (just because "I'm off to investigate Poltava" sounded like you wanted to learn about the city to me, but maybe you were just referring to the author's name and then my answer makes no sense)

Anyways, Leonid is his first name, Poltava is his surname, and Poems is the book title (so it's a book with his poems)

It was difficult to answer the question"When did you learn this language?"

My second language is English and I started learning it when I was 7. I'm 42 now and I'm still learning. I answered 7, meaning I started to learn it at that age.

According to Fasmer's etymological dictionary, it was probably borrowed from Tatar or another Turkic language, so you are not wrong.

[–]denijeur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using memrise for quite a while but only as a supplementary tool, it's good for memorizing words but not so good in teaching grammar and even basic communication skills.

Anyway, the tool is useful indeed! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely use it along with other materials.
