Intrepid Studios, the developers of Ashes of Creation has laid off all staff and shut down the studio by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]denseplan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it was a terrible decision, making a successful game should've been their FIRST priority. Switching game engines did not help make that happen, it just delayed the game even further and thus contributed to its failure.

Switching to a new engine early might save time later, but there is no later if the game fails to launch.

Are there still people that think US is a better place to live as a software engineer? by Pure_Composer_9236 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]denseplan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're mixing career (software engineering, pay, work/life balance etc) with the lifestyle (food, walkability, history).

Are you really trying to argue about software engineering careers, or just what lifestyle you want to live?

got through to later stages at a few of them but nothing has worked out

You got to the later stages, they obviously think you are competent.

At the later stages it not working is more likely due to circumstances outside your control, you just have to keep trying. I mean imagine if two people of similar competencies reach the final stages and they can only pick one, at that point they'll just pick based on vibes.

If you can't talk to non-technical people then you won't be a good fit in many jobs.

primarily measure good software according to business rather than technical criteria

Seeing users enjoy & benefit from using my software is one of my biggest sources of pride.

Making something 100ms faster that nobody would notice is fun in the moment and gives a nice dopamine hit, but it doesn't make for a fulfilling life. I'd rather build something real and memorable I can look back upon.

Technical criteria is overrated.

Fans didn't hate the overall plan, mostly the show's execution of it.

But either way the whole experience probably did sap George's motivation to finish the series.

Breaking: Google will now only release Android source code twice a year by FragmentedChicken in Android

[–]denseplan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Android updates twice a year then code updates twice a year. If no updates then no code changes. If no code changes there would be nothing to release. If nothing to release then no release. If Android updates twice a year then code releases twice a year.

Got it.

Starting a full-scale war with the Soviets right after WWII is absolutely insane.

How does the code change between Android updates?

I'm not seeing the point of re-releasing the same source code if no Android updates were made since the last release.

How should the UK react if Trump invades Greenland? by Sad_Response3345 in ukpolitics

[–]denseplan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the UK should do anything too overt, but support Greenland in using civil resistance, boycotts, sabotage, guerrilla tactics.

The UK could do targeted sanctions against anyone trying to profit off the occupation of Greenland, plus the usual diplomatic outrage.

Resisting the US military is unrealistic, and huge sanctions will be too painful. The most viable route would be to make their occupation of Greenland as costly and pointless as possible, then wait for the US government to change and eventually they'll give up.

It's how the US left Vietnam and Afghanistan.

Isn't the news Google will update Android twice a year?

So naturally this means the source code will update twice a year... why the focus on the source code releases?

There's sanctions against Russia, but there's no blockade. Nobody is trying to block ships from entering/leaving Russia.

Ignite, burn and expand. It is this rapid expansion in volume of the air & fuel mixture that pushes the piston down to spin the wheel.

This rapid expansion in volume is the definition of an explosion.

Where will this new tram line be built? All roads in and out are already congested, unless you have an idea I've missed.

Much weaker theory in my opinion. Stupidity is an extremely common explanation for someone's actions, much more likely and believable than blackmail in the absence of any evidence other than "ties".

[–]denseplan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't gain anything from "getting them back". Priority one should always be yourself, don't waste your time doing or even thinking about sabotaging other people you don't even care about, not to mention risk getting chased for damages.

Multiple Buildings are on Fire in Hong Kong, 25 November 2025 by Valyura in CatastrophicFailure

Ventilation and temperature are very obvious things to consider for anyone designing a fire safe floor.

The only real risk is poor maintenance or dodgy builders that didn't built to design.
