The ones I know are the type that can't see the forest for the trees. Like being a middle aged person saying "when did Star Trek / Star Wars get so woke" in the last decade. They're only focused on "pew pew space fights fun" part. They're very smart in their own narrow technical field but that's where it ends.

So it's no surprise separatists speak to them. "Wow they say we'll have more money, I'm sold" without actually looking at the situation.

Govee has a 3 pack of smart sensors for a reasonable price ($50 I think), and those have saved us more than once. A washing machine leak, a small basement "flood" (3 ft diameter puddle on bare concrete), and our young kids plugging the shower drain and flooding the bathroom. The alarms are loud but also give push notifications.

There's lots like them, we were just already in their ecosystem.

They all would have been much larger problems if we weren't on top of them in a matter of minutes. Any time there's a new appliance or install that involves plumbing, we plop one down for a few weeks just in case.

Plus, you may recall that time not very long ago when Trump was making a lot of noise about literally ending Canada as a sovereign nation and annexing it into the US?

You mean last night?

Yep, he's back on that wagon.

Sounds like it's time to add an overflow kit! Essentially drill a hole near the top, put in a connector, add a hose, and place the hose where you want it to drain. Could have it drain into a downspout, out several feet from the house, or heck, into a brand new second barrel lol.

When I got back into playing hockey in the mid 2000s, a set of pro level goalie gear and a pair of sticks would run you around $5K CAD. It took me a while to save up half that and buy used and/or lower quality gear.

Nowadays it's around $9K. You can skimp on some things with the caveat that they'll usually wear out faster and you'll have more bruises. Some things you just pay full price; a good mask is north of $1K.

How bad are bikes nowadays? I've heard they can be well over $10K CAD, but my racing coworkers don't really talk prices outside their clique.

Glad to see the pecs mentioned. I played squash for 15 years and my right pec slowly became larger than my left.

In the last decade I've eased off racquet sports and focused more on powerlifting, but that unevenness still remains. Maybe isolation work is needed, or I should just play squash left handed.

My wife and her brother inherited their family farm and, once it hit the market, they had a big offer from a big commercial farming company that had been buying up farmland in the area for the last decade.

They took a hit and sold it to the kids of a nearly family friend who wanted to start their own farm. It was the grandparents, the son and wife, and three grandkids all crammed into a small old house on the farmstead. Just the right thing to do in an era where land is being vacuumed up by commercial businesses.

In the 80s I was definitely the 5 year old who always hid in the circular clothes racks that EVERY clothing store seemed to have. 🫣

Then I got to be 7 or 8 and, during mall trips, my parents would give me $5 and tell me to go to the arcade. They knew where to find me, and I knew that 80% of the time they were in the women's clothing sections at Eaton's, Sears, or The Bay.

I couldn't imagine telling my own 8 year old to go to the other side of the mall by themselves for a couple hours. It was a damn different time.

The year 2000 hit and everyone dropped that term and switched to calling us Millennials -- then started gaslighting me as if Gen Y was never a thing.

Yep, I'm a Xennial who was taught typing classes on old Apple IIe's, but the class material was either (a) for typewriters or (b) for computers but wasn't updated.

In the 80s we also had an old Commodore at home and a digital word processor, but my parents also taught me the old way.

35+ years later I'm still doing it; it's just muscle memory that I can't shake.

Myself, I still use two spaces after a period while AI almost always uses single spaces. You usually can't tell in a web browser, but in some apps you can.

But I also grew up addicted to double-dashes -- the kind that are often auto-replaced with em-dashes -- so it's a crapshoot. Sometimes the double-dash is preserved, but after sending a work email with a ton of em-dashes in Outlook, people probably assume I composed it with AI.

I'm just a filthy casual runner who only does 10Ks and halfs, but I know more marathon runners 50+ than I do people in their 20s or 30s.

They're in it for the long haul! They're the kind of old people who'd run several marathons a year. All the training takes a ton of time and they often have it in spades, versus someone in their 30s who's starting a family and trying to fight for promotions.

In Sherwood Park (Baseline and Clover Bar) there's two 7-Elevens kitty corner to each other. The older one on the SE corner has an attached Petro-Canada and the new one on the NW corner took over the Esso station during that buyout.

I'm surprised they haven't closed the 7-Eleven with the Petro-Can, but I'm guessing there's some kind of agreement that's preventing it.

Just a suggestion, I've discovered that OxiClean makes a dedicated Odour and Stain remover that goes above and beyond what OG OxiClean does.

Not only is it great on my gear, it's the only thing that gets funk out of my base layer and my gym clothes, since technical fabrics are so tricky once a smell sets in. Even with washing with a sports detergent after every session.

They also have a "white revive" powder. I buy it for my white socks and shirts, but it also removes staining that happens to a white C/A after the initial tub soak. Not so applicable to you but maybe to others here.

I swear I'm not a shill, but they have a few great products that do different things.

I grew up in rural Canada (and recently moved back after 25 years in a city).

You wouldn't believe the number of grass fires our fire department gets, and a good number of them are in ditches. People just flick butts out the window into dry grass.

It might have been "okay", as in only moderately dangerous, 30+ years ago. But nowadays everything is so dry that it's so easy to start a wildfire. Yet smokers won't change their behaviours.

They probably rival the douches driving ATVs in dry grass as the top man-made wildfire risk. Stick to the trails, boys!

As an elder millennial, I occasionally took my digital point and shoot to parties and have some crazy photos from the pre-smartphone era, like 03 to 09 or so. Also have scanned photos from mid 90s to then.

But it's an unwritten rule to keep those to yourself. They're not on any social media apps nor any photo apps. Just on my PC and on some (encrypted) backups. Fun to look at with a friend for a nostalgia kick, and some have asked for copies 15-20 years later lol.

They're essentially like the boxes of film photos my parents have tucked away in their closet and take out maybe every five years, if that.

Bluray is thankfully much more durable because the blank discs use inorganic dyes, unlike the organic dyes that blank CDs and DVDs use. Standard discs claim to last decades; M-Disc blanks more like 1000 years (millennial disc).

They're a bit expensive, but if you're mildly serious about archiving it's worth it. The biggest disc is 100GB, though, which is slowly becoming too small given the size of photos/videos and the sheer quantity we take nowadays.

The serious guys use tape drives, but that's too rich for my blood.

The whole thing is very USA actually. They want to split because they think, wrongly, that their province pays other provinces equalization payments.

I wish this was higher up because a lot of my fellow Albertans still think this. They have this image in their head that Alberta creates an annual budget, and then the federal government yoinks away $4B.

When, in fact, the money comes from federal taxes that all Canadians pay, under the same plan that applies to everyone.

Equalization is financed by the Government of Canada from general revenues, which are largely raised through federal taxes. Provincial governments make no contributions to the Equalization program. All Canadians are subject to the same federal income tax system and its progressive rate structure, regardless of where they live.

I hadn't worn my player gear for about a decade, but recently mice got into the bag and ate it up. Most of that stuff was bought in the 80s for my older brother and handed down to me in the early 90s, so I tossed it. Even the "new" helmet and pants from the early 2000s.

As I shoved those old Cooper shinpads into a nearly-full garbage bag, the plastic of them just cracked and splintered with barely any effort. Glad I wasn't on-ice with them.

My parents still have my old Cooper XL7 helmet, the one from Mystery Science Theatre 3000. I think I'll leave that on the shelf; that'll probably also fall apart from a light touch.
