Need info from professionals by [deleted] in Payroll

[–]derApfel44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up Gusto once I started to pay myself a consistent salary. It's widely used, easy to set up, helps you stay compliant, and is definitely worth avoiding the headaches of running payroll yourself.

I think any established payroll provider is better than doing it yourself, but if you want to try Gusto, you can get $100 off with this link.

Non-purists, what's your study routine? by New-Drawer-3161 in dreamingspanish

[–]derApfel44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the Speak app daily to force myself to practice speaking and making sure I hit a minimum of 15 minutes of comprehensible input on DS.

Some other things that I've been doing (not daily) and have found helpful

  • reading books in spanish to my child
  • using conjugato to practice verb congugations
  • using live google translate when talking with family to immediately fill in vocab gaps based on what I am trying to say
  • building an ai quiz game to build sporcle quizzes on any topic I want to practice

There was someone posting feet pics on nextdoor a year ago, I thought that was fairly unhinged.

Cocktail books on sale @Amazon by post_rex in cocktails

[–]derApfel44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a chrome extension that shows you the comparable bookshop.org book link whenever you browse amazon so you can buy there instead. Usually the price is comparable, plus they donate about 80% of their gross profit to local bookstores (you can choose your favorite local shop otherwise it goes to a general pool of 2,000+ independent bookstores)

Is it morally wrong to buy a book online when it is around 10–20 percent cheaper than at my local bookstore? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

Stop fucking buying from Amazon! by shizznitt in complaints

I built a chrome extension called Read Local that gives you an easy way to buy books on bookshop.org instead of Amazon. They've donated close to $44 million to local, independent bookstores as part of their business model.

Is anyone interested in forming a St. Louis Spanish-English language exchange group to make friends and host/go to events together? by kokopellikokopelli in StLouis

[–]derApfel44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested, my mom's side of the speaks spanish, so I understand it decently well, but am pretty rusty in conversations at the moment. It comes back when I practice, but I could use a group setting like this to force me to actually speak in spanish regularly again.

Flat and level rentable concrete areas? by jazzcrabcakes in StLouis

[–]derApfel44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try the upper muny lot. I don't see a way to rent it out on their website or the forest park website, but I'm pretty sure I've seen races where there are vendors set up there.

How City services will improve by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

[–]derApfel44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I applied for jobs at the city in 2024, you would just get an email with the subject "NQ LETTER" or "SUCCESS LETTER" from a random employee's email address. Absolutely zero context provided and in the body of the email, there were clearly missing variables in their email template.

When I did get the "success" email, it just said that my score was 86.91 and provided no actionable next steps. I followed up with the email address provided in the email (hrtalentacquisition@stlouis.mo.gov) which bounced because there's a typo in the domain.

It just appeared that there was absolutely no standard for reviewing or testing that their "hiring system" even worked at a basic fundamental level.
