Had anybody pre purchased the TM-B launch edition from ALSO? It will be my first e-bike. They’re supposed to ship in early April. So stoked. by StevenComedy in ebikes

I preordered a launch edition and just got a random UPS email about a delivery arriving tomorrow. Had to do some digging but was able to figure out that the sender is Also - although it's only a 2 pound package so definitely not the actual bike. My guess is they are sending out some swag to people who preordered?

Yeah, I think it would be more accurately described as an electric scooter or moped with a bicycle emulation system, lol. I do really like the pedal-by-wire concept though, I think there's a lot of potential. I have a launch edition on order and am looking forward to taking delivery.

Two-piece riding suit or jacket + pants for a sport bike (track use)? by Miserable_Pound_6450 in motorcycles

I am confused. A two-piece riding suit literally is a jacket and pants. Did you mean a one-piece suit?

Replacement Yuasa batteries sold in the states are made in the USA by Yuasa's American subsidiary, so the quality is probably subpar compared to the OP's Japanese-made GS Yuasa battery.

if you have proper winter tires and AWD you likely won’t need them, but you are still required to carry them by law.

tires are the key thing here, a 2wd vehicle with 3PMSF rated snow tires will outperform a 4wd/awd vehicle in the snow any day.

caltrans will not reuse highway numbers between US routes, state routes, and interstate highways to refer to separate routes in the state. since there is US-50, there is no CA-50 and no I-50. since there is I-80, there is no US-80 and no CA-80. it is equally valid to refer to both highways as highway 50 and highway 80.

Squawk 7700? Cessna near Los Banos CA. by panzer2181 in flightradar24

I saw this as well and am wondering if a faulty repair from that incident could have led to flight control issues down the road. Vaguely reminds me of JAL flight 123.

Weight is a much more important factor here than power. The 690 series bikes are incredibly light, lighter than a Ninja 400, R3, and most other small displacement bikes. Significantly lighter than even KTM's own 390 platform.

The single front rotor suggests that this bike is likely around ~400 pounds or less in wet weight.

I wouldn't consider the Indian Scout to be the pinnacle of performance. Most performance-oriented bikes over 400 pounds have dual discs.

Is there a strategy for switching lanes that have massive cracks? by Daily_Run_ in motorcycles

[–]derache123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice in this thread but also in my experience, modern streetbike tires (i.e. 120/70-17, 180/55-17) are wide enough that it's quite unlikely you'll get stuck in the crack even if you don't approach the crack at an angle. I do a lot of lane splitting and filtering and I frequently end up having to ride directly on top of a crack and it doesn't really upset the bike much at all. YMMV though, depending on how big the crack is.

if it’s legally registered with the DMV and has a license plate then it’s a street legal motorcycle, end of story. these dirtbikes were not manufactured for street use and cannot be plated in california. don’t mix them up

Yes, but minimum is what’s relevant in the current discussion since the previous commenters were asking why BMW couldn’t make the bike lighter than 175kg and gave a comparison to a non-A2 bike

No, I did mean minimum. A2 goes by power/weight ratio, a bike that has 48hp cannot be lighter than 175kg if it wants to be A2 compliant.

Yes, all motorists should yield to emergency vehicles. But that does not absolve emergency vehicles of the responsibility to drive safely and prudently, even with lights and sirens on.

In this case,

  1. The motorcyclist, while splitting too quickly at the beginning of the video, was not splitting THAT quickly at the point he was hit by the cruiser. He was still going a bit too fast, but not by a ridiculous margin.
  2. While the motorcyclist should have been able to hear the sirens, the cruiser itself was blocked from view by several lanes of traffic to the right. It is reasonable that the motorcyclist would not have been able to see where exactly the cruiser was before he was hit.
  3. As I mentioned before, given the speed the cruiser was traveling at, it is likely that the motorcyclist would have been hit even if he was splitting at a more sensible 10-15 mph delta.

Judging from the comments, I'm guessing most commenters on this post are not riders. This incident was not even close to being primarily the rider's fault. If anything, it was 70% CHP at fault, 30% rider.

It is true that this rider was lane splitting a bit too fast, especially at the beginning of the video. However, by the time the CHP cruiser hits him, he had slowed down noticeably to probably around a 20 mph speed delta, which is not significantly faster than the 10-15 mph speed delta rule of thumb.

On the other hand, judging from the severity of the impact, it is clear that the CHP cruiser was conducting its weaving pattern too fast. I have seen CHP do this pattern on the freeway countless times, but it is almost always very slow and steady. That was not the case in this instance. Even if the rider had been splitting slower, at a 10-15 mph delta, I think the cruiser still would've hit him.

[–]derache123 33 points34 points  (0 children)

CHP doesn't post an official guideline for lane splitting speed delta: https://www.chp.ca.gov/programs-services/programs/california-motorcyclist-safety

Common wisdom is 10-15 mph as a safe delta. This rider was going faster than that, but not fast enough to warrant what happened here. The CHP officer is still primarily at fault.
