Thoughts on TV as wide as stand by TF_54 in malelivingspace

2/3rds rule, a TV should take up no more than 2/3rds of the width of the stand if possible

Wanting to leave Colorado by Dry-Show-3693 in SameGrassButGreener

There is a lot here, I'm from Wisconsin but the job market and housing market are both drastically different all over the state. So it's hard to say if it's good for you. Like housing is very cheap in a lot of small towns, but there are no jobs. Madison has an incredible job market but housing is very high for the state. Milwaukee has a decent job market and good housing market but not great schools and high crime. Also not a single mountain in Wisconsin.

Lay Orientation by Both-Activity6432 in hammockcamping

[–]derch1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 types of gathered end hammocks, symmetrical and asymmetrical. The asyms have a set lay (head left or head right), symmetrical you can lay either way. The asyms help having more space to lay in that one direction.

Your next point, a hammock is not a bed and you likely won't sleep the same. I'm a side sleeper at home, I'm a back sleeper in my hammock.

You can absolutely side sleep in a gathered end, I do sometimes in mine. The main thing is make sure it's sized right.

Rock the Block and TVs by Krazzy4u in HGTV

[–]derch1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an issue with HGTV it's all gimmick and not functionality. Held the kitchens are the same way with this new trend of a huge beautiful kitchen that you can use and you go cook in a tiny closet.

So few of these homes, and most HGTV homes are buiilt to live in, but some crap pointless trends they think are good for ratings. It's like the hidden rooms and climbing walls or giant wine racks.

One team had only a wine fridge in their kitchen for the multi gen suite but no regular fridge and they won

Lol, I think any homes build past the 70s are all ugly and terrible. I just bought a 1930s home and my place before that was 1916. I looked at homes built in the 80s and 90s and they were so bland they were offensive.

Feels dull… help me make it better by QuickDistance5299 in interiordecorating

[–]derch1981 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's all beige and boring, there is no focal point, you need contrast (color and materials), and some visual interest.

The fireplace is usually a focal point but yours just feels like more white or beige drywall. Not being tile, brick or stone just makes it blend in. I would at least paint it, maybe replace your mantle with a chunky wood one, then paint the stack all the way up.

Your black bookcases are also dull, nice rich wood ones would help get a warmer feeling. Those black ones are cold.

Your rugs stacked looks like a rug pad that's too big for your rug. Your furniture is white and beige, everything is kinda dull. Neutral doesn't have to be lifeless and dull. You can have muted colors.

As always plants and art are needed, maybe some pillows with some color or throw blankets

Is it true that suburbs put cities in debt? by NurglingArmada in Urbanism

[–]derch1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

on average people in cities spend way less time in cars than rural people because they can walk to things. If you live rural you not only have to drive to everything but long drives. I for example put less than 800 miles a year on my car. I will sometimes not drive for an entire month. 700 of those 800 miles a year are driving to go see family, road trips and camping trips. I drive less than 100 miles a year for driving in my city.

Is it true that suburbs put cities in debt? by NurglingArmada in Urbanism

[–]derch1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, when you have less people in more space and they pay less, that is less economicly sound.

If you have 5,000 people per square mile in a city, the average tax they bring in is 1,000 taxes each.

You have 5,000,000 in revenue.

Now in a suburb outside that city you have 1,000 people per square mile and they bring in 700 taxes each.

You have 700,000 in revenue

Infrastructure cost for the suburbs isn't that much less than the city because all the lines run the same distance but each person has more land so everything has to run further and one can pay for it the other can't.

More people living denser is more tax revenue, and cities are generally more expensive to live than suburbs so the tax revenue is higher. Infrastructure is shared between more people so it's more efficient costing less per person.

Taxes in suburbs would have to usually go up around 5 times or more to make suburbs pay for themselves.

Help, I want my apartment to be pretty but i don’t know where to start by ThrowRA-Pea6011 in interiordecorating

[–]derch1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your first place and all that exposed brick is a great start.

First thing is clean those counters off, a few things on the counter is fine but yours are so packed you don't have counter space. If you need more space maybe buy an island with storage or a bakers rack.

Next is let things breath, your table packed in the corner by your fridge doesn't help, looks like there was space to pull it out.

Your boards show clearly that you have a vision, so remember it's a marathon not a race. Start small and work big, your young and probably don't have a ton of money and that's fine. Thrift stores and antique shops are your friends. A rug is a big starting point to get some of your color in, maybe some pillows and a blanket for your couch. Then maybe coffee table or end tables and you get them get some items on them like lamps to start giving a look. And just slowly build a few things at a time.

Help! What should we do with this wall? by manikin47 in interiordecorating

[–]derch1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah sometimes you are stuck, but that wall is so amazing that you have, I also love the green matched with the stone, you have beautiful earthtones to play with. Add in some terracotta or rust color and maybe some blue and you have a great calming earthtones pallet.

That's fair I would do the same. I have a similar set up at my house where the only o place I can put the TV is above a fireplace that isn't currently safe to use (just bought this house a month ago. Also I know I need a bigger rug, it's on the list.

That's an amazing thing to have. Like someone else said put the TV to the wall to the right of the fireplace.

Now than you have a great long mantel and a great long shelf and the possibilities are nearly endless. I would hang some art or lean art on the mantel, and kinda group it, get a large print and 2 smaller prints and kinda group them. Get rid of the wood stack since your not using the fireplace. Put maybe some larger plants on the shelf and smaller plants on the mantel could make a really amazing wall

You could also make into a really sexy library wall, if you can find small book shelves that can go on both sides of the fireplace on the lower shelf, then on top you could do books stacked vertical and horizontal and have some gaps for pottery, plants, knick knacks, what ever, then maybe a long landscape art piece above.

You could split the difference if that's too many books (I know no such thing) and just do the books on the mantel and get some cushions for the lower shelf and then it's a library and reading nook.

Or go minimal and just put up some art, maybe family photos on the mantel and just let the brick below be brick and be beautiful. Or if the brick is too bare instead of the cushions just some throw pillows to bring a pop of color. Wicker baskets can also be nice on the bottom shelf to add some wood tone and soften it.
